Woodshop Equipment Safety and How-To-Use Tips

Machine safety is a top priority within the woodshop. One way to promote safety is to have machine specific safety and how-to-use tip sheets posted near each machine. This information should include both machine safety information on what to do and what not to do; as well as, specific information on how best to use the machine to get great results. New members need to have these tip sheets pointed out to them on a frequent basis.

Also, these equipment safety and how-to-use info briefs should also be added to the WWC website.

An additional benefit should be the reduced cost of replacing band and on the two large . I am sure Russ could give us an idea of the cost of all the blades and sandpaper replaced in 2020.

The following machines have safety and how-to-use tip sheets:

Grizzly MODEL G0513 SERIES HEAVY-DUTY 17" BANDSAW

Prior to use, apply the Tension lever on the back of the band saw and open the duct before use and close it when done.

Do not push the wood with too much force. Let the band saw do the work. Too much force will cause the blade to twist causing an uneven cut.

Do not try to make any adjustments to the blade tension.

For detailed operating instructions refer to the owner's manual which can be found on the Woodshop website at: https://cdn0.grizzly.com/manuals/g0513_m.pdf

Additional Safety Information for Band Saws

HAND PLACEMENT - Placing hands or fingers in line with a blade during operation may result in serious injury if hands slip or the workpiece moves unexpectedly. Do not position fingers or hands in line with blade, and never reach under the table while blade is moving.

SMALL/NARROW WORKPIECES - If hands slip during a cut while holding small workpieces with fingers, serious personal injury could occur. Always support/feed small or narrow workpieces with push sticks, push blocks, , , or some type of clamping .

BLADE SPEED - workpiece before the blade is at full speed could cause the blade to grab the workpiece and pull hands into the blade. Allow the blade to reach full speed before starting the cut. DO NOT start the machine with a workpiece contacting the blade.

FEED RATE - To avoid risk of workpiece slipping and causing operator injury, always feed stock evenly and smoothly.

BLADE CONDITION - Dull blades require more effort to perform cut, increasing risk of accidents. Do not operate with dirty, dull, cracked or badly worn blades. Inspect blades for cracks and missing teeth before each use. Always maintain proper blade tension and tracking while operating.

CLEARING JAMS AND CUTOFFS - Always stop bandsaw and disconnect power before clearing scrap pieces that get stuck between blade and table insert. Use brush or push stick, not hands, to clean chips/cutoff scraps from the table.

BLADE CONTROL - To avoid risk of injury due to blade contact, always allow the blade to stop on its own. DO NOT try to stop or slow blade with your hand or the workpiece.

UPPER BLADE GUIDE SUPPORT - To reduce exposure of operator to blade and provide maximum blade support while cutting, keep upper blade guides adjusted to just clear the workpiece.

CUTTING TECHNIQUES - To avoid blade getting pulled off wheels or accidentally breaking and striking the operator, always turn bandsaw OFF and wait for the blade to come to a complete stop before backing the workpiece out of the blade. DO NOT back the workpiece away from the blade while bandsaw is running. DO NOT force or twist blade while cutting, especially when sawing small curves. This could result in blade damage or breakage.

WORKPIECE SUPPORT - To maintain maximum control and reduce risk of blade contact/breakage, always ensure adequate support of long/large workpieces. Always keep workpiece flat and firm against table/ when cutting to avoid loss of control. If necessary, use a jig or other workholding device.

WORKPIECE MATERIAL - This machine is intended for cutting natural and man-made wood products, and laminate covered wood products. This machine is NOT designed to cut metal, , stone, tile, etc.

After use, release the Tension lever and close the air duct.

Clean up your debris on the table and around the band saw when done.

If you think the band saw is not cutting properly, ask the monitor for assistance. The saw blade may be dirty -- from cutting wood with lots of sap or plastic or epoxy. The monitor may be able to remove the blade and clean it in a tub of warm soapy water.

Jet 14-inch Woodworking Band Saw

This band saw is designed to make cuts with curves. It works best if you go slowly and do not put undue pressure on the blade. Too much pressure on the blade; such as making a tight turn, may cause the blade to break.

For detailed operating instructions refer to the owner's manual which can be found on the Woodshop website at: https://content.jettools.com/assets/manuals/708115K_man_EN.pdf

Open the dust collection system duct before use and close it when done.

Additional Safety Information for Band Saws

● Give your work undivided attention. Looking around, carrying on a conversation can result in serious injury. ● Maintain a balanced stance at all times so that you do not fall or lean against the blade or other moving parts. Do not overreach or use excessive force to perform any machine operation. ● Turn off the machine before cleaning. Use a brush or compressed air to remove chips or debris — do not use your hands. ● Do not stand on the machine. Serious injury could occur if the machine tips over. ● Never leave the machine running unattended. Turn the power off and do not leave the machine until it comes to a complete stop.

Do not try to make any adjustments to the blade tension.

Clean up your debris on the table and around the band saw when done.

If you need assistance with the band saw ask the monitor.
