1. INTRODUCTION

LIFE ALCHEMIA deals with the environmental challenge implied by the presence of natural radioactivity in drinking water. This natural radioactivity is created because of the dilution of elements like uranium, radium, radon or thorium in water when it contacts soils with high contents of these species. Once dissolved, some isotopes of these elements lose energy through the emission of alfa and beta ionizing radiations, what makes these waters be considered as radioactive. The Directive 2013/51/Euratom of the European Union establishes the maximum radioactive values that drinking water can contain. Namely, it is established that alfa and beta activity cannot exceed 0.1 and 1.0 Bq/L, respectively. If alfa or beta activity exceed these maximum values, the analysis of the concentrations of the radionuclides contained in water and the calculation of the water ID is a must.

A Member State in which water with ID value above 0.1 mSv/year are found should consider whether that water poses a risk to human health which requires action and, where necessary, take remedial action to improve the quality of the water to a level which complies with the requirements for the protection of human health from a radiation protection point of view.

Regarding the presence of radon in drinking waters, the European Union states that “above a concentration of 100 Bq/l, Member States should set a reference level for radon to be used for consideration whether remedial action is needed to protect human health. A level higher than 100 Bq/l may be adopted if national surveys show that this is necessary for implementing a practical radon programme. For concentrations in excess of 1000 Bq/l, remedial action is deemed to be justified on radiological protection grounds”.

The creation of a database that shows the current state of this environmental challenge in is one of the aims of the Project. In summary, this database shows the radiological quality of the water consumed throughout the 16 German states. The database is divided in two parts according to the two types of information sources consulted:

1. The raw source of information is the report “Strahlenexposition durch natürliche Radionuklide im Trinkswasser in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland” (“Radiation exposure from natural radionuclides in drinking water in the Federal Republic of Germany”) reported by the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection in 2010. This document reports the radiological characterization of the water consumed in 244 districts or landkreis distributed throughout the 16 German states. The characterization of at least 1 sample from each landkreis is there reported. Table 1 summarizes this information showing the number of analyzed samples from each landkreis, and the highest alfa activity and radon concentration values among all of them. In the case that these highest values are above 0.1 Bq/L and 100 Bq/L, respectively, they are red coloured and, together to the data, another number appears in brackets that shows the specific number of samples among the total that exceeded those limit values.

2. Further and updated information about the radiological quality of drinking water of the landkreis red-coloured in Table 1 is shown in Table 2 to Table 10. This information was collected from the websites of the local suppliers that provide drinking water in different cities and villages of those landkreis. The common radiological characterization provided by German water suppliers consists of the uranium concentration, which cannot excced a value of 0.01 mg/l.
