Did You Know... by Judy Pearson AmericanBorn Part 3 Two more AmericanBorn Servants of God may soon be designated Venerable and closer to becoming canonized. Fr. Emil Kapaun was born on a farm in Kansas in 1916, was ordained a priest in 1940, and entered the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps in 1944. He served in WWII, then again in the Korean War when he was taken prisoner and died in a POW Camp. He was sometimes called the Good Thief because he would steal coffee, tea, and a pot to heat them in from the guards at the POW camp and would also help smuggle dysen- tery drugs to the doctor. Fr. Kapaun died of mal- nutrition and pneumonia in the camp in 1951 and was buried in a mass grave near the Yalu River. In 2013, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Korea. “When I was ordained, I was determined to ‘spend myself’ for God. I was determined to do that cheerfully, no matter in what circumstances I would be placed or how hard a life I would be asked to lead.” Fr. Kapaun to his bishop in 1944. Servant of God, Rose Hawthorne Lathrop (Mother Mary Alphonsa) was born in Massa- chusetts, the third daughter of the great Ameri- can writer, . Nathaniel died when she was 13, and her mother died a few years later. At age 20, she married . They had a son who died at the age of 5 from diphtheria, and their mar- riage broke up soon afterward due to George’s alcoholism. He died a few years later from cir- rhosis. Alone, Rose served alongside the Sis- ters of Charity of St. Vincent DePaul. She was inspired by their motto, “I am for God and for the poor.” She obtained her nursing degree and became a Dominican tertiary known as Mother Mary Alphonsa. She founded an order in De- cember 1900 now known as the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne. She died in her sleep on July 9, 1926 at the motherhouse of her congre- gation at age 75. “I am trying to serve the poor as a servant. I wish to serve the cancerous poor because they are more avoided than any other class of suf- ferers; and I wish to go to them as a poor crea- ture myself.” Rose Hawthorne Guggenheim Summer Fun Day: July 29, 30, or 31 for youth 1218 years. Although change is often times difficult, it is an opportunity for our Parish Communities to grow. More and more, lay people are being asked to participate in ministries and in our liturgy. The response has been overwhelming and we are very appre- ciative for your support. God is calling each one of us to do His very special work. Have you ever wondered if there is something you can do for your parish com- munity? Do you have a talent you would like to share? Do you ever have that gnawing feel- ing that God is calling and you don’t know how to respond? If so, answer your calling through prayer and by offering yourself as a of Christ, which you are. “as He chose us in Him, before the foundation of the World, to be holy and without blemish before Him”. St. Mary's Music Ministry I am very much looking forward to recon- necting with the cantors and choir members from our parish. Anyone who isinterested in joining our ministry, as well as thosewho are currently involved in the music ministry, are invited to attend an informal meet and greet at the St. Mary's Parish center on Wednesday, August 4th, from 67pm. If you are interested, but unable to attend, please reach out by email at [email protected] or by phone at3152213689. This week's readings also bring to mind one of my favoritehymns, Like a Shepherd, and I hope you also find tranquility from the lyrics of the refrain: "Like a shepherd he feeds his flock, and carries the lambs in his arms. Holding them carefully close to his heart, leading them home". Explore the Mystery of the Eucharist: Dea- con Bill O’Brien will present a 6week series on the Holy Eucharist called “Presence: The Mystery of the Eucharist", beginning August 4at both 9:30am or 6:30pm (whichever is con- venient for you) each Wednesday for 6 weeks in Brzana Hall, Ogdensburg. Workbooks pro- vided. For more info or to sign up, email Dea- con Bill at [email protected] by July 25. Sign up is a must to assure yourself of a work- book.
