Meet Andrew Patterson. I met Andrew at a fundraising event at the end of 2017 in . He’d just been retrenched and wanted to do something different….. To make a difference in the world. Andrew is an avid hiker, and he’d decided he’d like to climb Table Mountain every day in 2018 to raise funds for charities. His aim: to change the lives of one million South Africans, by raising R1 million in 2018! With the help of One Heart for Kids, Andrew developed a crowdfunding campaign and narrowed his selected charities down to three: One Heart for Kids, the Sunflower Fund and Habitat for Humanity. To date Andrew has raised ,000, and says that he anticipates he will reach his R1 million mark by the end of December – mostly via promisory notes that have already been committed! Well done Andrew!! “The words that I’ll remember the most, is when you (Matt) said that freedom is a state of mind. And the way you just made me passionate and you said that we should focus on something we love and that we should work on it, and that we should focus on our dreams.

And you also said that if our dreams are not on a piece of paper, then you’re not serious about your dream. So, I know that I have some dreams and I would like for them to come to pass one day, so it just inspired me to work on them, to find out what I need so that they will come to pass. You instilled hope and also said that we should speak life, speak life into a dead situation, and ya, a lot, amazing. This Year’s Events

One Heart is a programme within the Sustainable Development Network Group. The group experienced a good financial year in 2018. Income from South African training programmes decreased somewhat, as a consequence of tough economic indicators in South Africa and the subsequent effect thereof on the cashflow available for NGO’s to spend on training. However, SDN was able to reduce operating costs by almost 22% by negotiating better terms with training venues and by making use of a core group of facilitators (who buy into the vision of SDN). The increase in travel costs is due to an enlarged footprint in Africa. It should be noted that the African footprint has increased significantly in 2018 as a result of networking, collaboration and social media marketing, which have had definitive positive effects on the bottom line as well as increasing the influence of SDN/ASA and their impact within the region.

As SDN is engaged in training and empowerment, most of the costs incurred are directly related to the training being conducted, with only 20% of income allocated to operational expenses and employee costs. If one takes into consideration that all operational costs and management of the One Heart programme are also borne by SDN, then the group allocation to overheads is a very healthy 15%.
