Bluebells at Enys Vicar’s letter—letter —
I have shivered through Easters past, in Wales, when outside looked like a Victorian Christmas card and snow banked up the dry stone walls. The bed rooms were so cold, we left the baby’s crib downstairs in front of the open fire. This year, with a combination of Easter falling late and unseasonably early heat and clear skies (those who see their glass half empty already bid ding summer goodbye for another year), the hedgerows have already their early May colour, pink, blue, white, a couple of weeks before their usual time. I hope you have been able to admire them over the holiday weekend and perhaps get as far as one of our churches; we look forward to a ‘proper’ Flower Festival in July in honour of our 1600 anniversary, but you would be forgiven for thinking we were in the middle of one right now, so beautifully our buildings have been decorated for the Easter celebrations. Saturday morning is a hive of activity in time for our evening ‘Service of Light’ when the new flame is brought into the dark building and the Pascal candle lit afresh. I am careful not to thank our flower arrangers for the work they do for God, but I made sure our full church congregation made its appreciation known on Sunday morning. Easter Day, and we rolled the stone away from the tomb in our Easter Garden and gave thanks for God’s great gifts to us. The theme of my address this Easter Sunday was Get a life – for this is what, I am sure, God wants each of us to do . By the time you read this, in just one week, I shall have conducted a baptism, blessed a marriage and, sadly, offi ciated at a funeral. All parts of life’s rich experience; and the long progress through Lent and Easter is a time for recognising that with our Lord’s strength we should not lose our nerve, but rather engage with all that life has to give us: do not be afraid.
In the words of an Archbishop: Live within the death and resurrection of Je- sus Christ. It is the gift God provides, not only for assurance hereafter, but for compassionate and hopeful living today.
4 Chapel Chit-Chit -Chat--Chat Remind me!
When recently reading from the Old Testament I was surprised to discover a short passage that sounded very much like part of the Lord’s Prayer; ‘yours is the kingdom’ ‘the power’ ‘the glory’ ‘from everlasting to everlasting’. (1 Chronicles 29) In our familiar Lord’s Prayer, Jesus seems to be quoting the words of King David from the time when people were bringing gifts to build Solomon’s Temple. Jesus makes reference to many Old Testament sayings. He was reminding the privileged Jewish nation, especially the leaders, of how they should function if only they heeded and obeyed the laws in all sincerity. He was like a breath of fresh air in a religion that had become stuffy and hierarchical. This was confirmed by his claim, “I have come not to destroy the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfil them”. To make our world a happier place we all need reminding. By what people say, or write, or do; memories, or random thoughts. I find there is nothing better than in reading the Bible with the help of a guide (and I can recommend those published by the Scripture Union). It takes discipline but is
well worth it, for I need constant reminding!

5 6 Community News and Views Mylor 1600 will begin in earnest on Sunday 1st May with a special 10.30 baptism service at St.Mylor Church; Canon Anthony Phillips will preach. Our 1600 lunch follows at the Penmere Manor Hotel on Saturday 7 th May. On Sun day 8 th May there will be a special Evensong service with a reading of the Gospel of St. Mark at St.Mylor at 4 p.m. The Nankersey Male Voice Choir are performing a celebration concert on Friday 3 rd June at St. Mylor Church. The concert will start at 7.30 p.m. This is the first time for many years that the choir has sung at St.Mylor, and it prom ises to be a very special evening. Tickets (£5 each) are now available from Judy Menage (01326 259909) or may be purchased on the door. A Summer Soirée will be held on Saturday 4 th June at the Old Vicarage Gar den, Mylor Churchtown, in aid of St.Mylor Church. The programme will feature Kay Deeming, Cheryl Brendish and others, with accompanist Paul Drayton; we look forward to an evening of comedy and tragedy through live opera, songs from the shows, and a little cabaret. Admission is strictly by ticket only (£15 per person). To reserve your tickets, please ring 01326 259909 or 01326 376275. The garden will be open from 5.30 p.m. for picnics: performance starts at 7 p.m. There will be a licensed bar. Please bring rugs and chairs, and dress warmly. Also, as part of the 1600 celebrations, the Mylor Singers will be giving their "home" Annual Summer Concert on Saturday evening, 11th. June, in the Tre mayne Hall. All proceeds will be in aid of St. Mylor Church's 1600 years' An niversary Celebrations. The theme of the concert will be the Royal Wedding, with appropriate songs and music, plus audience participation. The Mylor Singers will also be contributing to the Flower Festival in St. Mylor Church in July with their exhibit entitled "The Floral Dance". The Mylor Singers will always welcome new singers. They meet every Tues day evening in the Methodist School Room at 7.30p.m., when the ladies al ways enjoy a great evening of fun as well as hard work. Irene Gardiner In case anyone is wondering what is happening with the Mylor Playing Field Project ..... the committee has now appointed a contractor for the re furbishment of the children's play area. Work should start in mid May with completion anticipated for the summer holidays. Pat Willmore A Coffee Morning was held in the Parish Hall on Saturday 9 th April in aid of St. Mylor & All Saints Churches to raise money towards the shortfall of funds. This was a successful event even though numbers were down somewhat. We would like to thank all who attended and also all those who worked so hard on the day. Thank you. Mylor Local History Group joined with the Lights Committee to provide a morning with a difference on April 2 nd . By 10.30 the Tremayne Hall was buzzing with activity. About 30 children of differ ent ages arrived from the Primary school dressed in wonderful Victorian costume and entertained us outside with their well rehearsed country dancing. With en couragement and guidance from the children, adults willingly joined in!
Meanwhile, indoors there were plenty of stalls from which to buy items, and many of the children enjoyed decorating an ‘egg’ for the Easter Tree. The His tory Group displayed information about their talks and future trip to Wheal Martyn (now only 4 seats left on the coach), and there was the chance to be come involved in a photograph competition. In the Reading Room there was an exhibition of a part of Tony Martin’s collec tion of material which he recently donated to the archives; also, the beginning of the work to colour code the first of two maps showing the development of Mylor. Other archive material was displayed and many people were interested to browse. There was the opportunity to become a member of the Local History Group which is now at the modest annual cost of £1. This means that you will re ceive the group’s forthcoming newsletters free and a reduced entrance fee for the Talks (which begin again in September). Further Information about the above activities will be found either in the Tremayne Hall entrance or on a Thursday afternoon when the archive centre is open. There will be a History Group stall at the May Fair on 14 th May. Jill Quilliam Mylor Local History Group has a very good collection of photographs. Sev eral are of people you may recognise dating from many years ago. Others are of parts of Mylor that show just how much the village has changed.
This has been the idea behind a photograph competition sponsored by MLHG and Mylor Magazine. Before June 10 th we would like to receive photos of Mylor which give a flavour of the village as it is now. ‘Features of Mylor’ is the title and we welcome your ideas of interesting corners of the village.

The Carrick Over-50’s Forum together with St Mylor Parish Church and All Saints Mission Church are being made increasingly aware that the economic cuts are already taking their toll. We are all aware of food banks and how even they are already struggling to keep up with demand, but there are other quite basic needs too. This month we would like to highlight the need for bedding. If you have any pillows, sheets, duvets for both double and single beds there are many people out there who would be very grateful. Roger Nicholls has very kindly agreed to put a large collection box in the Church. Brooklyn , by Colin Toibin was the subject of Mylor Book Group’s discussions this month. I liked this story of lives quietly led, and how the course of a life can turn on chance events made at a young and impressionable age. Eilis’s life is dictated by those around her – her mother, her sister, her neighbours, her first employer and her priest, all of whom lay plans without consulting her. She is vulnerable and follows the enormous decision, made for her, to emigrate to Brooklyn without complaint or challenge. As soon as she leaves, she has to grow up rapidly, make decisions, deal with an alien environment and decide who to trust. After much suffering she dis covers that she can survive and thrive as her own person, but she is pulled into an intense relationship and secret marriage with a young Italian. He uses emotional blackmail to make her commit herself to him when she is at her most vulnerable. This book is powerful because it is precise and sparsely written, showing the havoc caused by repressed emotions and the cruelty of everyday events. It is sad but illuminated by humour and it met with a mixed response from the group. Sue Kinley Mylor Flower Club members enjoyed an evening of demonstrations at the Ord Statter Pavilion on Monday 4 th April when Catherine Reeve (Truro) showed her “Sense of Style” in a variety of designs. These ranged from very modern using only red roses threaded through heart shaped frames into foli age covered foam bases to a striking traditional triangular design incorporat ing the most delightful rose appropriately named “Coffee Break” with subtle shades of brown, copper and cream. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 3 rd May at the usual venue when Glennis Beard (Chacewater) will demonstrate her ideas of “Show Bench” and will judge the club competition “I’ve got Rhythm”. This promises to be a won derful evening as Glennis has long been demonstrating and entering competi tions throughout the country so has gained vast experience which she readily shares with her audience. In the last edition, Nankersey Rowing Club were poised to take part in the 370km Shelterbox Rally, rowing the Falmouth to St Mawes leg of the relay. The whole event raised £4542.20 by traversing the Cor nish coastline em ploying people power alone (running, cy cling, gig rowing, swimming) and was organised entirely by students at the Uni versity of Exeter Cornwall Campus.

Tremayne Hall The bookings continue to be good and we are now planning to carry out some maintenance. Considering the heavy use over 4 years the building is standing up well and we are impressed by the care taken by most hirers who have been good at leaving the hall as they find it. The wooden handrail to the front door is a temporary safety measure, but will be replaced later with a metal one to match the other rail. The ramp has been an ongoing problem, but we shall be making improvements to it this year. After the AGM in April the new committee will be planning exte rior and interior painting that will soon become necessary to preserve this listed building. By the time you read this a TREMAYNE HALL sign should be in place, paid for by a generous donation. For more than two years there have been problems with planning permission and delays relating to its construction. It was stipu lated that the sign should be made by a local craftsman, us ing local materials. John Chris tian of Boquio has made the sign, designed by Peter Clark, using wrought iron and wood. It will hang from the wall above the gate with the ability to swing back to allow high sided vehicles to enter. After endless meetings and form filling, I can hardly be lieve it is happening at last! Parish Council Talks regarding affordable housing in Mylor are continuing, although the origi nal funding went elsewhere because of difficulties with the original site. Corn wall Council and Devon & Cornwall Housing Association are actively seeking new funding and will be returning to the Parish over the summer to give an up date. Potholes in the Leats Car Park have now been filled, as have the holes at the Playing Field entrance. Tenders for the footpath cutting have been sent out and will be considered at the May Parish Council Meeting. The Parish Council acts as agents for Cornwall Council whose responsibility the footpaths are. The Parish Plan is progressing and it is hoped to have two public exhibitions to show the comments and recommendations shortly. The Plan will then be pub lished and copies available throughout the parish. Down the Yard Action down the Yard this month is definitely hotting up and that’s not just because the sun is shining! Everyone is busy getting boats back in the water. We encourage all of our remaining customers to book their launch dates well in advance as our May schedules are extremely busy. The final stage of our new floating dry dock was tested this month; it proved a great suc cess as Shoo Shoo , the 60 foot Jongert, was launched. On the highest tide, the floating dry dock was towed down river to a safe mooring position. At low tide, the dry dock beached and the main gate was lowered. As the tide came in, the dock flooded, and Shoo Shoo successfully floated out and was towed to the marina for completion of engine works and sea trials. We are now ready to receive our next customer for the dry dock the locally owned Kuramba, a gentleman’s mo tor yacht coming for a complete repaint. Shoo Shoo awaits the tide in her floating dry dock In April, we had a visit from Donna Capel a 52 foot wooden gaff Ketch who has a great history with Mylor Creek Boatyard. Donna Capel, originally built in Os tend in 1943 found her way to Newlyn and was bought by Terry Heard in the early 1970′s. He floated her, with his son Martin, to Mylor Creek Boatyard; nearly sinking in the process as she was in such a poor state of repair. Sadly Terry died before he was able to restore her. She was subsequently restored, in his memory, by his son, Martin, for Brest and Douarnenez 1992 and then sailed by him for the next 7 8 years before selling her to John Davison in 2000. She then spent the next 6 years as a permanent resident at Mylor Creek Boatyard undergoing major restoration works. She paid tribute to the team which she described as “immensely suppor tive despite my obvious failings in the minu tiae of committee protocol and procedures”, and supposed that she would miss the sense of common purpose of working with them. However, living close by, she would be happy to see others working to develop new ideas and initiatives, and hoped that they would derive an equal pleasure and passion as she had enjoyed since the inception of the pro ject, which she had come to regard as “her baby”. Coming from a family of teachers and as a former teacher herself, Val has al ways taken a keen interest in community projects. Trained in the arts, she has taught in a variety of primary and secondary schools, chiefly in the state sector. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and must have been as inspirational to her pupils as it is to those of us who have had the pleasure to work with her on the various projects with which she has been associated since her retire ment to Mylor in 1996 – the Book of Mylor, the Mylor Local History Group, the Mylor Magazine and, above all, Tremayne Hall itself. In this last respect, she pays tribute to the leadership and guidance of her predecessor as chairman, Chris Perkins who led the project so successfully through the difficult early days and who in passing over the chair to her in 2008, gave her the very sound advice that “three years is enough”! Speaking of her unfulfilled ambitions for the village, Val told me that she would like to see the W.I. return again to Mylor and hoped that more could be done for young people– maybe a youth choir or some sort of dance club. She also spoke about her hopes for more clubs and self help groups such as weight watchers, although she was very aware that there are only a finite number of evenings each week when the Hall can be used. Her love of Mylor and its people is obvious. Even before coming to live here, Val, with her husband Michael, knew the area well, having kept their boat, Ygor , moored in the Creek for a number of years. Circumstances, and anno domini, have brought about a change in that the boat has now become a caravan in which she and Michael love to tour the continent in search of warm sunshine and the richness of European culture, including not only art and ar chitecture but a variety of good wine and good food. In the latter respect, Val confessed to me that she has always loved her food and will try anything once even eating Australian Witchety grubs if offered! Apart from her holidays and village interests, Val enjoys taking long walks with her dogs and attempting to use Skype to keep in touch with her large extended family now scattered to every corner of the globe.
