PRESIDENTS LETTER from Jerry McConnell

Hey Campers!

So, it's official, Punxsutawney Phil declared that early spring "is a certainty". I won't suggest everyone put away the snow shovels just yet (that would be tempting fate); however, it probably is time to start making your checklists and making sure your rig is ready to roll.

My personal spring maintenance list is extra-long this year as we have put a lot of miles on the old coach since the last major refit. I have the usual stuff: the annual vulkem, wash, wax ritual (if I'm being honest, it is only "semiannually", in that I only sometimes do it annually); flushing the white tank and the water heater; cleaning the a/c filter, etc. However, in addition, this year we need new tires all around, new batteries, the 30 year old front end is shaking like it's 30 years old and the crate engine needs some TLC after 60k miles - as Roseanne Roseannadanna use to say - it's always something.

Speaking of something, CKR is a just a short 12 weeks away; Amy and Jeff Sutton along with Sonia and I are co-hosting this years festivities and we are looking forward to a great turnout. If you haven't booked your spot please do so soon. We also have a full slate of other great rallies in the line-up so please check them out below.

As always, please be safe out there and we'll see you down the road.

Jerry & Sonia

1st VP letter from Kim Alaniz Hi there, 1st VP here looking for a little help for the 2020-2021 rally year. I’d like to encourage everyone to look ahead and possibly consider hosting a rally. As usual, we will start with a kickoff rally, April 2021. This rally is open for anyone who would like to start us off on the right foot. Patti Galupo has filled our May slot and will host a rally at her home away from home in Staunton, Virginia. As for June, it hasn’t been determined if the New England Unit will once again host the NYC Base Camp Rally. It’s a rally that occurs every other year. The unit is unable to confirm the rally until one year prior once the campground lease is confirmed. If the rally is a go, we would love to encourage our unit to attend and possibly help in any way we can. International will be in my great state of Tennessee in July 2021, so a caravan will be planned for anyone wishing to attend. August is wide open and my preference for September will be a week at the beach, Outer Banks, NC. The beach week is relatively impromptu and doesn’t really require a host unless someone wants to get their feet wet (no pun intended) by hosting their first rally. That brings us pretty much to installation in October. Plenty of time to plan for this one. I am hoping the unit will surprise us with some great locations and itineraries. Remember, you can do as much or as little as you’d like. No fee rallies are loved by all – find a great location and let that be your guide. If you are unsure if hosting a rally is your thing, throw out some ideas and we can work with that. Co-hosting is a great option. If there’s already a rally planned and you’d like to help, reach out to the host and let them know. Nobody has ever turned down help!

I’m supposed to say a little bit about the Crabby Rally that Danee and I along with Jerry and Sonia are hosting in Crisfield, Maryland. I don’t have much to tell you other than it’s planned for July 16-19, 2020, at the American Legion. There will be 12 sites available with water and electric. The grounds can accommodate possibly three more trailers that can daisy chain off another site. There is also Janes Island State Park that can be booked if we fill all our sites at the American Legion. I will, within the next month send out the registration form for the rally. I would though like to ask for feedback. A local purveyor of crabs, The Crab Place, will be having a Crab and Cruise All Jumbo Crab Event, Friday, July 17th. The crab feast by itself (not including the cruise) is $90.00/person. Pretty pricey I know, but their crabs are exceptional. (PS: all I want to know is if you are interested, please no bitching about the price). If this is something you would or wouldn’t be interested in let me know. You can go to their website https://crabandcruise.com/shop/product?id=DPuiguN_Sto and get more information. Stay tuned.

JOIN US / Renew – 2020 WBCCI Membership Renewal Information

It’s time to pay your WBCCI and WDCU dues for 2020 which is $66.00 ($65.00 for WBCCI and $1.00 for WDCU). The best and easiest way to do this is to go to the WBCCI web site and pay with a credit card. Here is the link. http://wbcci.org/component/rsform/form/12-renew-your-wbcci-membership. Life members of WBCCI and Affiliates of WDCU can send their WDCU dues to Diane or give them to her at a rally.

If you prefer, you can pay directly at a rally; cash or checks are both fine. If you choose mail, send a check for $66.00 to Diane Sheridan, 15053 Greymont Dr., Centreville, VA 20120.

To be listed in the 2020 WBCCI Directory, dues need to be paid before November 30, 2019. If you have any changes to your Directory information, please note them on your renewal form or notify Diane.

If you have any questions, email Diane at [email protected].

WDCU Renewal Information – How dues are calculated during the year.

WBCCI membership runs for the calendar year, January 1st through December 31st. Renewals begin in August of the preceding year and can continue throughout the membership year. If you want to be listed in the Membership Directory, your renewal must be in the WBCCI office by November 30th of the preceding year. If you renew after January 1st, at any time during the year, you will pay the full amount of $65.00 plus $1.00 for WDC Unit dues. But – if you renew after July 1st, you will also need to pay in full for the following year. So, if you don’t renew for 2018 until July 10, for example, you will pay $132.00 instead of $66.00 and your dues will be paid through 2020. If you don’t renew at all in 2019 you can reinstate your membership if you renew in the first half of 2020. It is easiest for everyone if you renew through the WBCCI office, whether by mail or online. If you are an Affiliate member of the WDCU or a Life member of WBCCI, you can pay your Unit dues of $1.00 per year for more than one year at a time if you pay it to the WDCU Treasurer/Membership person. So, if you give Diane $5.00, it will be good for five years. Regular members of the unit can only pay one year at a time; again, it is easiest if you do this directly to WBCCI when you renew your WBCCI dues. If you are paying just Affiliate member dues to Diane it is important to address your checks payable to Wally Byam Caravan Club International, Washington D C Unit. New members’ dues are prorated if they join later in the year. There is a schedule on the WBCCI web site; after July 1st new members pay the prorated amount for that year plus the full amount for the following year. Diane Sheridan

How Erica and Sulley Became the Face of Census Campground Posters by RJ Marquette

This year, you may notice a familiar face or two in the office when you’re checking into a campground: Erica and Sulley are on a poster encouraging campground customers to respond to the 2020 Census. The poster is reproduced on the next page.

As you may know, Erica and I both work for the Census Bureau. She works on the Economic programs that the Census Bureau runs, while I work on the 2020 Census. As I write this in January 2020, we’re bracing for a busy spring and summer (one of the main reasons we aren’t going far for camping this year).

As you might imagine, enumerating over 300,000,000 people in the United States comes with quite a few challenges. One of those challenges is in the many ways people can live – houses, apartments, college dorms, nursing homes, boats, and recreational vehicles, to name a few. A special field operation covers what we call “Transitory Locations” like hotels, motels, marinas, carnivals, and campgrounds – locations people tend to stay for only a relatively short period of time.

The people planning the operation wanted posters for various locations, including campgrounds. They wondered, “Who do we know that has a motorhome?” “RJ and Erica!” I got a frantic message asking if we had a motorhome, which really confused me – I thought they were asking about the B190 – but I had to run to a meeting before the fog cleared, so they called Erica. This confused me even further, because I didn’t know they knew Erica (Erica note: I am involved in a lot of social work activities, so my network stretches wider than RJ thinks…). Eventually all was explained, and my confusion was resolved with a 30 minute meeting (probably the most entertaining meeting we have both been in), and we set up a Friday morning appointment a few weeks away. We explained the situation to our bosses, and that we’d need a few hours of our workday to cover it, and they were supportive...and amused.

A few evenings before the appointed day, Erica and I set up the trailer in our back yard. That Friday morning was beautiful – it had rained the night before, and there was rain forecast later in the day, but we couldn’t have picked a better morning. Before they arrived, I opened the awning, hung some lights, put out some chairs, and spread out a mat so that it really looked like we were out camping. Sulley joined us since it is only natural to have a dog with you while camping. The Census photographers came and took over 100 pictures – with other employees posing as enumerators knocking on the door, us answering the door in the camper, and talking to the enumerators in various poses. Sulley was a great sport the whole time and even hammed it up for the camera at points! After an hour or so, they were done. We considered doing similar pictures with the B190, but we concluded that it would just look like a van up close.

After reviewing the pictures, the team produced four draft posters with different pictures – one had Erica and I in our chairs talking to an enumerator, one had me talking to an enumerator at the camper’s door, and one with an enumerator about to knock on the door, but the selected poster was easily the best one. As soon as I saw the proofs, I asked, “You’re going with Erica and Sulley, right?”

So, that’s how the 2020 Census got Erica, Sulley, and our Airstream in their campground posters! As you see them along the way, feel free to post it on the WDCU Facebook group. And don’t forget to make sure you fill out your Census if you are in the US on April 1, 2020!

The poster follows on the next page and the unchosen photos are at the end of the newsletter.

CAMP COOKIN’ – Spiral Hot Dogs

STEP 1 – Materials You’ll need skewers (wooden or metal), a knife, and of course, your hot dogs.

STEP 2 – Skewer Your Dog What you want to do is skewer the dog(s) right up the middle.

STEP 3 – Make Your Cuts Then either make individual cuts along the hot dog or roll the hot dog with the knife diagonally placed inside the meat.

STEP 4 – Grill to Perfection Once that’s done, you can take your spiral dogs and place them on the grill. Since the inside of the dogs are exposed, the meat will cook more quickly, so be sure to keep an eye out for them. Remove them from the heat once they are charred to your liking. If using a metal skewer with a long handle, I would think you could cook them over an open fire.

ONE MOORE THING…

CKR 2.73 months, 11.71 weeks, 82 days!

I think I have cabin fever. I thought WAM and I needed a field trip, so I booked a trip to Freeport, ME on the Amtrak Downeaster. They offered a low fare to get people travelling after Christmas and it took the same amount of time to get there as if we drove, but neither of us had to. The destination was to one of the outlet capitals of the northeast, but it didn’t matter. It was fun and different even if we only went to lunch and had a couple of beers. I do love train travel. It ranks number two after Airstream travel.

We got a little taste of spring a week or so ago and I just cringe when I hear there is ‘weather’ on the way. Storm coming in this weekend but luckily it could be mostly rain, which brings other issues when the temperature dives again.

WOW! I got some articles and rally information this month! YAHOOOOOO! I and your unit members thank you. I have included them in this month’s newsletter.

For Rally hosts – NEW THIS YEAR – If you are running a rally, please don’t forget to do a write up after the rally for the newsletter. You could do it or you could assign (ask) someone to do it for you. I have been doing most of the rally reports for the rallies that WAM and I attend but we won’t be going to many WDCU rallies this year due to long distance travel. I will be reminding the host of this important task so please think about it ahead of time. It doesn’t have to be elaborate.

Please submit your news articles by February 29, 2020 as a word document OR just type it on an email. Please let everyone know what you’re up to for nursing cabin fever.

Just campin’, Linda #15116

INTERNATIONAL – June 20-27, 2020 – If anyone is planning on attending International this year, please let me [email protected] or Jerry [email protected] know so we can plan on where to meet. Below is an email from Lucius and Danielle Herrmann about volunteering during the rally for Habitat for Humanity. Keep in touch. Linda

Hello Airstreamers,

It's 2020 and time to start taking action on resolutions for the new year. Please continue reading below for a fun and interesting way to contribute to the Loveland, Colorado community while attending the June 2020 WBCCI rally. Not attending the rally? That's fine, read about this opportunity and tell your friends.

You are receiving this email because you fall into one of the following categories: 1) We've spoken with you about Habitat for Humanity, 2) You've attended one of the Habitat seminars at a WBCCI rally, 3) You've expressed an interest in helping on a Habitat project, 4) You commented or liked the Facebook post Mona Heath made about Habitat for Humanity at the Loveland 2020 rally, or 5) Today is your lucky day!

The Loveland Habitat for Humanity affiliate has reserved 60 volunteer positions for WBCCI members to help build decent, affordable homes while our club is in the area. There will be over 1400 people attending the rally and we only have 60 positions available. Filling those volunteer spots should be no problem for a giving, caring group of people like us. Recall the rally in West Virginia and how rewarding it was to give your time and talent to aid the flood victims. Loveland will offer us that same sense of satisfaction by helping the Habitat affiliate build homes for deserving families in the area.

Habitat homeowners are carefully selected through an application process that determines the ability of the family to repay the mortgage, maintain the property and provide sweat equity in building their own home or the home of another deserving family. All we have to do is show up and provide help.

For more information please refer to articles in the Blue Beret as well as the Loveland 2020 web page: https://loveland.airstreamclub.net/ then click on the Habitat for Humanity tab. When you've made your decision to participate, click on the registration link below:

https://signup.com/go/LtwwYur

Thanks for taking time to read about this wonderful opportunity. Please help spread the word by taking time to forward this email to friends attending the rally as well as using social media to help with this deserving cause.
