Earl “DMX” Simmons departed this life on Friday, April 9th, 2021 in White Plains, New York. It’s surreal for me to be writing this article. Sources across the globe are publishing stories both online and in-print about X. Though many sources want to focus on negative aspects of X’s life, I’d like to share the good. I’m a young man from Yonkers, New York who was born in 1995. As such, DMX’s music played a huge role in my childhood. Songs like, “Ruff Ryder’s Anthem” and “Party Up (Up In Here)” were literally, Yonkers Anthem’s. Between Mary J. The tax paying food establishments have already suffered ______significant damage from the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, and will suffer further damage from food truck vendors who would siphon off cus- tomers from an already diminished customer base. Should the said food establishments be compelled to shutter their doors and not be in existence once the pandemic and its restrictions have passed on, this could result in diminished services and lost tax revenues to the detriment of the Town and Yorktown tax payers. Further, such food trucks would bring about more litter on the streets of Yorktown. For the foregoing reasons, we, the undersigned, hereby request that actions be taken to prohibit the issuance of such permits and licenses and the repeal of any laws and regulations would allow the issuance of such licenses and permits for food truck ven- dors to operate within the Town of Yorktown. Nick Karkambasis, owner of the Yorktown Diner, said, “I have 35 employees and pay more than $50,000 in taxes per year. The Town should be working to protect small businesses who made it through the last year. Bringing in more food trucks will hurt my business and others in town. We have joined together to collect signatures and make the residents in town and our loyal customers to become aware of this Like many businesses and most restaurants, 2020 was a horrible year for the Yorktown Diner. “Last year we were basically closed for 4 months and only had takeout. We tried to stay open so that our workers didn’t have to go on unemployment, and to stay open for our loyal customers. I think to have to go through COVID and now have to fight against Food Truck is ridiculous,” said Karkambasis. “We stayed open during the Hurricanes, and we thank our loyal cus- tomers who have supported us all of this year with take out. This is not Manhattan, this is about a local business fighting to survive.” Karkambasis bought the Yorktown Diner in 1995. For those of us who grew up and lived in Yorktown in the 1980’s, the Yorktown Diner is a landmark, and we are happy to see it open and continuing to serve great food and hospitality. Senator and Education Committee Chair, Shelley B. Mayer said, “Today EOE is an historic day for the Yonkers Public Schools and schools throughout New York State. With the leadership of Majority Leader Senator Stewart-Cousins and our Assembly colleagues, we have finally succeeded in ensuring New York State meets its constitutional obligation to fund its public schools based on need, not politics. I know that for the children of Yonkers, this day has been a long time coming. I thank all the forces that contributed to this vic- tory - my elected colleagues, the parents of the YCPTAs, Dr. Quezada, Rev. Sayegh said, “Since my first year in the Assem- bly, my first priority has been to correct the state funding inequity that hurts Yonkers Public School children. So after battling for fair foundation aid funding for all these years, I am thankful that with Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins leadership and the efforts of my fellow Yonkers State Rep- resentatives, we were able to deliver this important funding increase that will greatly benefit our children.” PAGE 8-YONKERS RISING FRIDAY, APRIL 16, 2021 I lost my mom to COVID.
