3 AEK Athens FC - SL Benfica Tuesday 2 October 2018 - 21.00CET (22.00 local time) Match press kit OACA Spyros Louis, Athens Match background

Having had their long European unbeaten run emphatically ended on matchday one, AEK Athens will look to make an immediate improvement as a Benfica side who are also seeking their first Group E points come to the Greek capital. • The Greek champions went down 3-0 at Ajax last time out, their first defeat in 15 European fixtures. Benfica fared little better at home to Bayern München, slipping to a 2-0 reverse, but may be buoyed by the knowledge they have already won in Greece this season. Previous meetings • Home sides held sway in the clubs' only past meetings, in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League group stage. AEK won 1-0 in Athens on 1 October 2009 – almost nine years to the day before this encounter – before a 2-1 Benfica success in Lisbon. • That defeat at AEK proved Benfica's only blemish in the section as they went on to finish first with 15 points; AEK, in contrast, were bottom with four points. Benfica eventually lost to Liverpool in the quarter-finals. Form guide AEK • AEK are in the group stage for the fifth time – and the first since 2006/07. Then they were unbeaten at home, picking up seven points in Athens and beating LOSC Lille and eventual champions AC Milan 1-0. • All four of the Athens club's previous UEFA Champions League group campaigns have ended at that stage. • Greek champions for the 12th time in 2017/18 – their first championship success since 1994 – AEK entered this season's UEFA Champions League in the third qualifying round, where they defeated Celtic 3-2 on aggregate (1-1 away, 2-1 home) to reach the play-offs. There they overcame Hungarian club Vidi 3-2 over two games (2-1 away, 1-1 home). • The home win against Celtic ended AEK's run of eight successive draws in European competition. • Last season AEK lost to CSKA Moskva in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round and moved into the UEFA Europa League, where they were ultimately eliminated by Dynamo Kyiv in the round of 32 despite avoiding defeat in all ten of their matches in the competition (W2 D8). • This season's qualifying successes made it 14 European games unbeaten for AEK (W4 D10) before the loss at Ajax. • At home, AEK are unbeaten in seven European matches, since a 2-0 loss against CSKA in last season's UEFA Champions League third qualifying round; their record since is W2 D5. • AEK have won two of their home games against Portuguese visitors, losing only the first. Benfica • Portuguese Liga runners-up in 2017/18, Benfica are in the UEFA Champions League group stage for the 14th time – and the ninth season in a row. • The Lisbon giants have reached seven European Cup finals, winning the trophy in 1961 and 1962. • Benfica kicked off this season in the third qualifying round with a 2-1 aggregate win against Fenerbahçe (1-0 home, 1-1 away). The first leg ended a run of seven successive European defeats – the Eagles failing to score in six of those, including the last five. Greece's PAOK were then defeated 5-2 over two legs in the play-offs (1-1 home, 4-1 away). • The PAOK win was Benfica's second consecutive success in Greece, a 2014 victory against the same opponents having ended a run of three successive defeats in Greece, where the Lisbon club's record is now W4 L5. • The matchday one loss to Bayern means the Eagles have won only three of their last 15 continental fixtures (D3 L9). • Before this season, Benfica had lost four successive European away games, and were without a win in five. Despite the PAOK victory, they have won only two of their last ten fixtures outside Portugal (D2 L6). • Benfica finished bottom of their section in 2017/18, losing all six games – the 20th time a club has gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a point. • The Eagles' next UEFA Champions League goal will be their 100th in the competition, group stage to final. • Benfica's eight successive UEFA Champions League defeats, and six consecutive games without scoring, are both Portuguese records. Links and trivia • Odisseas Vlachodimos was coached by current AEK boss Marinos Ouzounidis at Panathinaikos between 2016 and 2018.

8 AEK Athens FC - SL Benfica Tuesday 2 October 2018 - 21.00CET (22.00 local time) Match press kit OACA Spyros Louis, Athens Head coach Marinos Ouzounidis Date of birth: 10 October 1968 Nationality: Greek Playing career: Apollon Kalamaria, Xanthi, Panathinaikos, Le Havre, Paniliakos, APOEL Coaching career: Kappadokes Alexandroupolis, Xanthi (assistant), APOEL, AEL Larissa, Iraklis, Xanthi, Platanias, Ergotelis, Panionios, Panathinaikos, AEK Athens

• Started out in the youth ranks of home-town club Ethnikos Alexandroupolis, a year at Apollon Kalamaria preceding a move to Xanthi aged 19. There Ouzounidis carved a reputation as a centre-back with an eye for goal – 16 in 140 matches – earning a 1992 move to Panathinaikos. • Won two league titles and three Greek Cups over five successful years with the Greens, and was the cornerstone of the defence that reached the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League semi-finals, before a two-year stint in France at Le Havre. • Returned to Greece in 1999 for two seasons with Paniliakos, switching to APOEL in 2001. The Cypriot league title followed 12 months later, Ouzounidis deciding to hang up his boots in 2003 aged 34 having won 50 caps for the Greece national team. • Moved into coaching almost immediately, once again kicking off his career in his native Alexandroupoli at lower- league Kappadokes. He got his first job as head coach in 2006 at APOEL, leading them to the Cypriot league title in his first season. • Took over at AEL Larissa for two years from 2008 and, after spells at Iraklis, Xanthi, Platanias and Ergotelis, landed the Panionios job in December 2014. Positive results added to his growing coaching reputation, paving the way for Ouzounidis to take over Panathinaikos in December 2016. He joined AEK in the summer of 2018 and led them to wins against Celtic and Vidi and into the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in 12 years. Rui Vitória Date of birth: 16 April 1970 Nationality: Portuguese Playing career: Fanhões, Vilafranquense (twice), Alverca, Seixal, Casa Pia, Alcochetense Coaching career: Vilafranquense, Benfica (Under-19), Fátima, Paços de Ferreira, Guimarães, Benfica • Born in Alverca do Ribatejo, in the Lisbon district, Rui Vitória spent the majority of his playing career as a midfielder with clubs from the Portuguese capital's metropolitan area. • Always plied his trade in the lower divisions and was a mainstay at Vilafranquense for nine seasons, with a one-year interlude at Alverca in 1996/97. After hanging up his boots at 32 in the middle of 2002/03, he began his coaching career immediately at the club, while simultaneously working as a PE teacher. • His first association with Benfica came two seasons later, as he led the Eagles' Under-19 setup for two years, a period which began his steady rise in Portuguese football. The first step was taken at Fátima in 2006, where his debut season was marked by promotion to the second division followed by immediate relegation, a journey repeated in the next two campaigns. • His good work led him to Paços de Ferreira in the top division. The first season ended with a seventh-place finish in the Liga and defeat by Benfica in the 2010/11 League Cup final. Departed three games into the following season but only took a week to find a new employer, in the shape of Guimarães. • In four seasons at the helm of the Minho outfit, he made his name by building competitive sides with few resources, as well as detecting and developing young talents. His highlight was victory over Benfica in the 2012/13 Portuguese Cup final, only the second trophy in the club's history. On 15 June 2015, he was announced as Benfica's new coach, and won the Liga and League Cup in his first season and the league and Portuguese Cup double in 2016/17, although the following campaign ended without silverware.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? Overall records • In 2012/13, Chelsea became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round to CSKA Moskva. • In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • Real Madrid then made it three wins in a row in 2017/18, becoming the fourth club to win three or more successive titles in European Cup history, and the first to do it twice. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München. Group stage • Barcelona have finished as group winners on 19 occasions, four more than Real Madrid and Manchester United and five more than Bayern München. • Bayern München (2 April 2013 to 27 November 2013) and Real Madrid (23 April 2014 to 18 February 2015) jointly hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with ten. Bayern surpassed the previous mark of nine, set by Barcelona between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. • Six teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain (1994/95), Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12 and 2014/15). • Twenty teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, most recently Benfica in 2017/18. • In 2017/18, Paris Saint-Germain set a new group stage record by scoring 25 goals, with Liverpool (23) also eclipsing the old mark of 21 set by Borussia Dortmund in 2016/17. Manchester United (1998/99), Barcelona (2011/12, 2016/17) and Real Madrid (2013/14) all managed 20. • Only Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05), Maccabi Haifa (2009/10) and Dinamo Zagreb (2016/17) have failed to score in a group stage. • BATE Borisov conceded 24 goals in 2014/15, a new group stage record which was matched by Legia Warszawa in 2016/17. The previous mark, 22, was held by Dinamo Zagreb (2011/12) and Nordsjælland (2012/13); Malmö shipped 21 in 2015/16. • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06), Manchester United (2010/11), Monaco (2014/15), Paris Saint-Germain (2015/16) and Barcelona (2017/18) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting CP on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition, a mark FCSB surpassed on matchday six in 2013/14. • Anderlecht hold the unwanted record for successive defeats in the competition, group stage to final, having lost 12 in a row between December 2003 and November 2005. Dinamo Zagreb are next with 11 consecutive losses on two occasions, from September 2011 to November 2012 and ongoing since September 2015. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is six points: Zenit in 2013/14 and Roma in 2015/16. Since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, eight teams have made it through with seven points: Legia Warszawa (1995/96), Dynamo Kyiv (1999/2000), Liverpool (2001/02), Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus (both 2002/03), Rangers and Werder Bremen (2005/06) and Basel (2014/15). • Napoli failed to qualify from their group with 12 points in 2013/14, the highest total of any team not to reach the next stage when the top two in each section progressed. Dynamo Kyiv (1999/2000), Borussia Dortmund (2002/03 – both second group stage), PSV Eindhoven (2003/04), Olympiacos and Dynamo Kyiv (both 2004/05), Werder Bremen (2006/07), Manchester City (2011/12), Chelsea and Cluj (both 2012/13), Benfica (2013/14) and Porto (2015/16) all

16 AEK Athens FC - SL Benfica Tuesday 2 October 2018 - 21.00CET (22.00 local time) Match press kit OACA Spyros Louis, Athens missed out with ten points. Goalscoring records • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat matched by Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at BATE Borisov on 21 October 2014. Eleven more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid on matchday six in 2015/16. • Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League group stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsing his own mark of nine in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15 and Ronaldo himself equalled in 2017/18. Lionel Messi got ten goals in 2016/17; Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03) managed eight. • Messi's hat-trick against PSV Eindhoven on matchday one of the 2018/19 competition was his eighth in the competition, one more than Ronaldo. Oldest and youngest players • Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens in 2006/07. • Francesco Totti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 38 years and 59 days, in Roma's 1-1 draw at CSKA Moskva on 25 November 2014. Ryan Giggs (37 years 290 days) was the previous record holder. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for Anderlecht against Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg on 1 October 1997.
