Beredning Styrelsens ordförande bereder ansökningarna med anlitande av erforderlig expertis. Beslut Fattas på styrelsemöten i mitten av mars och september. Om stiftelsens anslagsverksamhet Området bebyggelsehistoria finns visserligen inte som akademisk disciplin, men styrelsen tolkar begreppet brett. Dock förbehåller sig stiftelsen att bedöma relevansen av inkomna ansökningar. (En vägledning finns i de ämnen som avhandlats i Bebyggelsehistorisk Tidskrift.) Stöd utgår främst i form av institutionsanslag, publiceringsbidrag och stipendier. Stöd ges till forskning av akademisk verkshöjd inom bebyggelsehistoria i vid mening. Forskning som grundar sig på Brandförsäkringsverkets arkiv och/eller historia ses som en plusfaktor. Stiftelsen står ej som ensam finansiär, utan substantiell medfinansiering (minst 50 %) av universitet eller annan kvalificerad part krävs. Stöd kan ges även till publikationer som innefattar eller bygger på material ur Stiftelsens arkiv (t ex kyrkobeskrivningar, lokalhistoria mm) och kan även ges till publikationer med särskilt syfte att sprida bebyggelsehistoriska forskningsresultat. Uppdelning går igen i forskning och hur S myndigheter och andra organisationer delar upp ansvarsområden. Medan det finns vissa fördelar med att dela in i kategorier begränsar det samtidigt vår förståelse för hur komplex, föränderlig och mångfa- cetterad markanvändningen kan vara. Den begränsar därmed vår för- måga att förstå människors agerande, både i äldre tid och i nutid, och hur landskapsrummet har använts. Särskilt skogen beskrivs endimensionellt, som natur eller för pro- duktion av träd för timmer- och massaindustri. Men i stora delar av världen bedriver småbrukare svedjejordbruk. Där forskaren och byrå- kraten ser skog ser bonden ett jordbrukslandskap och där jägmästaren ser en misskött skog ser bonden en skog med en mängd olika funk- tioner. I de nordiska länderna hade skogen en mer mångsidig användning före det moderna samhällets genombrott. Inägojorden och utmarken bildade tillsammans förutsättningarna för jordbruket. Ådel Vestbö- Franzén och Clas Tollin lyfter i sina respektive artiklar fram hur vik- tigt svedjebruket var under tidigmodern tid och betonar att skogen även var en del av jordbrukslandskapet och att man där odlade spann- mål. Med fokus på södra Sverige behandlar författarna olika aspekter av svedjebruket. I Ådel Vestbö-Franzéns bidrag presenteras hur det i efter dyningarna av den senmedeltida ödeläggelsen uppstår flaskhalsar där svedjebruket utgjorde ett viktigt komplement till åkerbruket på in- ägorna trots en generell brist på arbetskraft. Clas Tollin visar i sin artikel hur mycket det tidigmoderna källma- terialet har att berätta om svedjebruket. Genom att systematiskt gå igenom äldre storskaliga kartor kan han visa geografisk utbredning och kvalitativa aspekter på svedjebruket. I Torben Dams artikel är det en helt annan markanvändning som står i centrum – gräsmattan. Vi får här följa gräsmattans

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/ah.343 RESEARCH ARTICLE The Life and Death of Residential Room Types: A Study of Swedish Building Plans, 1750–2010 Mattias Kärrholm While the study of building types is a well-known and relatively active research field, the topic of room types is less explored. This article takes a broad approach to spatial categorization, enabling the examina- tion of different types of spaces over longer periods. How do different room types evolve and die? How do the different residential room types relate to each other? Do they act alone or do they follow each other over time? The article looks at the particular evolution and development of Swedish residential room types and is based on the study of plans of 2,340 Swedish buildings from about 1750 to 2010. Six themes emerged from this study: thresholds of birth and extinction, abruptive change, the relation between absent and present room types, contagious types, different temporal scales and the stabilization of prototypical sets. Using architecture analysis and the biographical method, the thesis explores to what extent the architecture of the pupil is inspired by the master, and if the commonly spread conception that Strömberg brought his masters architectural idiom to Gothenburg, is true. The medieval revivalist architecture started out as a romantic motive in English parks during the 18th century, but it didn’t spread widely until the architecture became a part of various religious and political movements in the beginning of the 19th century. Carl Georg Brunius was a Greek professor and self taught architect in Lund who became the main medieval architecture advocate in Sweden.

ABSTRACT The Swedish system of listing buildings, byggnadsminnesförklaring, is a conservation tool which requires selection. Only a very limited number of objects can receive the protection of byggnadsminne. This study focuses on the past and present use of the system in the Swedish region of Värmland; the purpose of the legislation when it was introduced in the 1960s, how it has been implemented and the outcomes in this region. It investigates the objects that have been chosen to be conserved for future generations and the process behind this selection. The paper concludes with a discussion about the image of the region and the history that is communicated by these protected objects. The study concludes that some aspects of our heritage have been protected to a far greater extent than others, the listed buildings therefore provide an incomplete image of the region and its history.
