  • W-League TV Viewership Up
Article No. 8468 Available on www.roymorgan.com Link to Roy Morgan Profiles Tuesday, 21 July 2020 W-League grows TV viewership as Australia & NZ awarded hosting rights for 2023 Women’s World Cup New research from Roy Morgan shows the W-League’s TV viewership is growing even as other Soccer competitions experienced viewership declines. A record high 879,000 Australians watch the W-League on TV, up 265,000 (+43%) on a year ago. In what represents a huge boost to the Women’s game in this part of the world Australia and New Zealand were recently awarded joint hosting rights for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup – the largest Women’s sporting competition in the world. The 2023 edition will be the first to welcome 32 countries to E compete, a significant increase on the 24 that competed in France in 2019. However, the W-League’s TV viewership growth was not enough to make up for the declines in viewership for the FIFA World Cup, English Premier League, A-League and other forms of Soccer compared to a year ago. Now 4,098,000 Australians watch any of the listed Soccer competitions, down from 4,577,000 a year ago – a drop of 479,000 (-10%). The FIFA World Cup is easily the most popular Soccer competition on Australian TV with 3,391,000 viewers, although this is down 471,000 (-12%) on a year ago. The next FIFA Men’s World Cup is due to be held in Qatar in 2022 with the FIFA Women’s World Cup following a year after in Australia.

  • BMO Management Strategies of Football Clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie
BSc-Thesis – BMO Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie Name Student: Mylan Pouwels Registration Number: 991110669120 University: Wageningen University & Research (WUR) Study: BBC (Business) Thesis Mentor: Jos Bijman Date: 1-23-2020 Chair Group: BMO Course Code: YSS-81812 Foreword From an early age I already like football. I like it to play football by myself, to watch it on television, but also to read articles about football. The opportunity to combine my love for football with a scientific research for my Bachelor Thesis, could not be better for me. During an orientating conversation about the topic for my Bachelor Thesis with my thesis mentor Jos Bijman, I mentioned that I was always interested in the management strategies of organizations. What kind of choices an organization makes, what kind of resources an organization uses, what an organization wants to achieve and its performances. Following closely this process in large organizations is something I like to do in my leisure time. My thesis mentor Jos Bijman asked for my hobbies and he mentioned that there was a possibility to combine my interests in the management strategies of organizations with my main hobby football. In this way the topic Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie was created. The Bachelor Thesis Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie is executed in a qualitative research, using a literature study. This Thesis is written in the context of my graduation of the study Business-and Consumer Studies (specialization Business) at the Wageningen University and Research. From October 28 2019 until January 23 I have been working on the research and writing of my Thesis.

1 ONSIDE: A RECONSIDERATION OF SOCCER’S CULTURAL FUTURE IN THE UNITED STATES Samuel R. Dockery TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin May 8, 2020 ___________________________________________ Matthew T. Bowers, Ph.D. Department of Kinesiology Supervising Professor ___________________________________________ Elizabeth L. Keating, Ph.D. Department of Anthropology Second Reader 2 ABSTRACT Author: Samuel Reed Dockery Title: Onside: A Reconsideration of Soccer’s Cultural Future in the United States Supervising Professors: Matthew T. Bowers, Ph.D. Department of Kinesiology Elizabeth L. Keating, Ph.D. Department of Anthropology Throughout the course of the 20th century, professional sports have evolved to become a predominant aspect of many societies’ popular cultures. Though sports and related physical activities had existed long before 1900, the advent of industrial economies, specifically growing middle classes and ever-improving methods of communication in countries worldwide, have allowed sports to be played and followed by more people than ever before. As a result, certain games have captured the hearts and minds of so many people in such a way that a culture of following the particular sport has begun to be emphasized over the act of actually doing or performing the sport. One needs to look no further than the hours of football talk shows scheduled weekly on ESPN or the myriad of analytical articles published online and in newspapers daily for evidence of how following and talking about sports has taken on cultural priority over actually playing the sport. Defined as “hegemonic sports cultures” by University of Michigan sociologists Andrei Markovits and Steven Hellerman, these sports are the ones who dominate “a country’s emotional attachments rather than merely representing its callisthenic activities.” Soccer is the world’s game.

  • Player Chemistry: Striving for a Perfectly Balanced Soccer Team
Player Chemistry: Striving for a Perfectly Balanced Soccer Team 1 1,2 Lotte Bransen ‒ Jan Van Haaren 1 2 S ciSports, The Netherlands ‒ K U Leuven, Belgium {l.bransen, j.vanhaaren}@scisports.com 1. Introduction In the dying hours of the 2010/2011 winter transfer window, Liverpool signed Andy Carroll from Newcastle United. Although The Reds had to break their transfer record, Carroll never met the expectations. The forward, who had scored 11 goals in 19 matches for The Magpies in the first half of the season, managed just 6 goals from 44 appearances for Liverpool. The then-22-year-old Carroll is a tall target man thriving from crosses, but Liverpool did not play that way and also did not have the appropriate players in their squad to accommodate his preferred playing style. In contrast, the more mobile Luis Suárez, who was signed on the same day and gelled much better with the players surrounding him on the pitch, scored 69 goals in 110 matches for Liverpool. Although this example illustrates the importance of chemistry among players, recruitment departments at soccer clubs still largely ignore this aspect in their evaluation of potential signings. Typically, scouts solely focus on the individual qualities of potential signings and do not account for the team balance and team chemistry in their judgments on the players. On one hand, assessing the potential chemistry with the players who are already on their team is hard by watching a limited number of matches either on tape or live in the stadium.
