PAUL CAREY JONES Bass-Baritone

Paul Carey Jones was born in , and studied at The Queen’s College Oxford, The Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio, where he was the recipient of the Royal National Eisteddfod of ’ most prestigious award for young singers, the W. Towyn Roberts Scholarship. In May 2013 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, and he was the joint winner of the 2013 Wagner Society Singing Competition. His further studies of the heldenbariton repertoire are supported by the Carole Rees Award for Advanced Musical Studies.

His operatic work includes principal roles for companies including Covent Garden, , Northern Ireland Opera, Scottish Opera, Wexford Festival Opera, Teatro Comunale Bolzano, Teatro Rossini di Lugo and Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Recent highlights have included his Covent Garden début as Ivan Ivanovich in The Nose, his house debut at the Teatro Comunale Bolzano as Dr Schön / Jack the Ripper in David Pountney’s production of Alban Berg’s Lulu, the role of the Priest in Scottish Opera’s production of Philip Glass’ The Trial, and his role debut as Wotan in Die Walküre for the Berwick Festival.

A specialist in contemporary music, he has given world première performances in operas by John Metcalf, Peter Wiegold, Jonathan Owen Clark, Keith Burstein, Christopher Norby and Brian Irvine, and his repertoire includes major roles by John Adams, Philip Glass, James Macmillan, Kaija Saariaho and Mark-Anthony Turnage, amongst others. In concert he has given the world premières of works including Richard Elfyn Jones’ In David’s Land, Stephen McNeff’s Cities of Dreams, Andrew Wilson- Dixon’s Karuna, as well as dozens of songs and song cycles.

As a recitalist he has worked regularly in collaboration with the award-winning pianist Llyr Williams for nearly fifteen years. Recent highlights have included their début album Enaid – Songs of the Soul, released on the Sain label to critical acclaim, and performances of Schubert’s Winterreise at the Rhosygilwen and Machynlleth Festivals. His other recent recordings include Michael Daugherty’s Jackie O on DVD for Dynamic, Edward German’s Tom Jones for Naxos, Under Milk Wood: An Opera for Ty Cerdd, and Songs Now for Meridian.
