This time last year we were contemplating taking our first step into a Calendar 6 “Second Century” of ministry, that first step is about complete as the Fall sea- son and Holidays approach. It has been a year of continued blessing as we Financial Report 7 paid off our debt on Long Hall and can now claim that dream officially ful- Birthdays & Ann. 7 filled. We have begun a process of looking at what some of our future Capital needs might be with the formation of a Capital Visionary Committee to collect information about our current needs. This process has not been a quick one as we encountered unanticipated obstacles along the way. We hope to soon have a list of perceived needs to bring to the Church Board for prioritization. Whatever we chose to do in ministry takes the “Heart” and “Hands” of those who call Longview Chapel their church home. It takes “Many Hands” to fulfill the ministry Christ lays before us and it takes “One Heart” to do it effectively and in the Spirit of Christ himself. This year’s Stewardship campaign will celebrate this idea as we again prepare to dedicate ourselves to the task of ministry in the year 2017. Our campaign will ‘Kick-Off” on Sunday, October 16 th which is a week earlier than usual. The start date was moved forward one week to ac- commodate our Family Camp program. As always, our campaign provides the MINISTRY STAFF congregation with an estimate of needed revenues for the coming year and the Senior Minister: Rev. Gary R. Blakeman congregation then responds with information about the resources they are Minister of willing and able to provide. The church board then balances the two to estab- Education & Youth: lish a 2017 budget. Let us all prepare to offer our “Heart” and “Hands” as we Rhonda Hetzel renew and rededicate ourselves to the ministry our Lord has for us here at Office Secretary: Longview Chapel. Dr. Anil Henry -- to visit Longview Chapel

On Thursday evening, October 6 , Dr. Henry will be with us at the Chapel to share the exciting work being done at the Christian Hospital and School in Mungeli, India. What a joy it will be to have this dedicated Christian with us who has accomplished so much since accepting the challenge of saving the hospital in Mungeli that was practically in ruin only 12 years ago. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet and hear this dedicated doctor and man of God. The evening will begin with his presentation at 7:00 p.m. followed by a reception in Long Hall. It has been several years since his last visit to the U.S. so this is a rare opportunity.

MUSIC MINISTRIES: In October, the choir will be presenting a variety of selections for the Sunday services. The words to, “Built On A Rock” were based on a 1909 text by Carl Doving. Jay Althouse, the present day composer, took these words and combined them with music to promote the theme of, “Jesus, The Rock of Our Salvation.” Be ready to listen to this selection on October 2. “Step Into the Water” is a 1981 selection that was arranged by Mosie Lister. Thomas “Mosie” Lis- ter was an American singer, song writer and Baptist minister. He was known for writing gospel songs. Lister was a member of and in 1976 was inducted into the Gospel Hall of Fame. In 1977, he was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Association. Legendary solo artists George Beverly Shea, Porter Waggoner, Bill Gaither, , and even chose to sing songs written or arranged by Mosie Lister. If you want to hear a little gospel, come to church October 9. Of course in selecting music for Sunday services, I want the congregation to also become familiar with the newest composers of Christian music. In the last two years, we have sung quite a few of Heather Sorenson’s compositions. We will sing a beautiful piece of hers called “In This Hour.” Come and listen October 16. In this hour, this precious hour I have met redemption’s power In this place, this holy space I have seen amazing grace. We always want to incorporate the old familiar tunes in our selection of anthems. Look for, “Holy, Holy, Holy” interspersed with, “The Splendor of His Holiness.” This is a new and refreshing way to keep the old hymn in our church services. And finally, to end October, the choir will sing, “To Believe.” This is a song written by Matthew Evancho for his daughter, a young singer who is now sixteen years old, Jackie Evancho. The choir is excited to be sharing with you these wonderful selections of music. Hooray for October!

Come join us for great good and even better fellowship. You can do it, oh yes you can!!

WILLING WORKERS: Fall is up on us and the Willing Workers are now working longer hours preparing for the Craft & Bake sale in November. We can always use good cotton material. Plan on helping us to set up the show, sales, and of course let your many friends know about our annual event.

It’s hard to believe we have started our 9 th year at the Chapel. We have 43 children enrolled! The teachers have been very busy decorating their rooms and planning their daily lessons. I’m blessed to have all returning teachers. Their hard work and dedication shows in our success. We have many fun things coming up…stay tuned!

NOON POT -LUCK: The Wednesday lunch bunch is back!! Join us on Oct. 19th to meet and enjoy the company of friends while sharing GOOD food, GOOD fellowship and a GOOD time.

THANK YOU • I wish to thank all of you for the cards received for me and my family, and the wonderful food received at home for the gathering. It was a long difficult time for my son and your remembrance to us was very appreciated. Betty Dalrymple • The Antique China, Crystal and Glassware sale on August 26 & 27 was a tremendous success. All this was made possible by Marlene and Lonnie Miller. Lonnie had spent months sorting and pricing each item. We are so grateful and blessed by their donation to CWF. Thanks to Sue Williams, Anita Hernandez, Bev Hocker, Anna Blackman, Martha Ryberg, Barbara Seburn, Bill Brown, Daleen Holt, Harriet Hafley and Louise Barber, and of course Marlene & Lonnie Miller for setting up, selling, and packing up what was left after the sale. Thanks to all those who came and purchased to help raise almost $3,000.00 for CWF. It was wonderful working together to provide funds for our future CWF projects. Delila Brown, CWF Chairperson • Dear Friends in Christ, Thank you for your generous support of our Regional ministries! Today we had the opportunity to meet with a metro area Christian counseling service to explore creation of an employee assistance program for clergy and their families. If we can generate sufficient funds for a one-year trial, we could provide pastors and their families with affordable access to mental health care. This is just one way in which we work together for stronger congregations. Gratefully, Bill Rose-Heim • We would like to thank Helen Thomas for her many years of faithful service to our financial ministry. Chapel Staff & Congregation

Family Life Ministry by Rhonda Hetzel [email protected] October Sunday School: Isaac and Rebekah In Genesis we read about the Story of Isaac and Rebekah’s marriage. Abraham set things in motion, but it is his servant who took responsibility to find a wife for Isaac. He prayed to the Lord for the success of his mission. This month, the children will learn the story of Isaac and Rebekah and of the their twin sons, Jacob and Esau. Through the centers Music, Science, Video and Cooking, they will discover that many times individuals tried to change God’s plan, but God is faithful to the promises He made.

We will have Sunday School and Children’s Worship on October 2, 9, 16, and 23. Assembly Sunday is on October 30. (October 2nd is the last date of the story of Adam and Eve)

Thank You A special thanks to our September Sunday School and Children’s Worship teachers: Jamie Castle, Kami Thomas, Karla Dickman, and Kory Dickman. The kids had a great time learning about Adam and Eve in the Garden! Your ministry to our children is greatly appreciated!

Sunday School Offering Children and Youth! We invite all the children of the Chapel (age 3 years —12th grade) to bring an offering each Sunday. There will be a special time during Assembly, in T.I.A., and Children’s Worship for them to bring their gifts so they can begin to understand the benefit of giving and steward- ship. As of the printing of this newsletter, the children have donated $170 in 2016 which is being used to purchase items needed at the Ronald McDonald House in Kansas City.
