Following South America=S Lead on Lasix THURSDAY, APRIL 4, 2019 FOLLOWING SOUTH CHRB=S WINNER HOLDS CONVERSATION WITH FEINSTEIN=S OFFICE, PLANS MEETING AMERICA=S LEAD ON LASIX by Dan Ross California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) chairman Chuck Winner said that he had a conversation with California Senator Dianne Feinstein=s chief of staff Wednesday, and that he is planning to meet with the senator or a member of her senior staff. This, after the senator called for racing to be suspended at Santa Anita until an investigation into the 23 horses that have died at the track since late December has been completed. "I believe that racing at Santa Anita should be suspended until the cause or causes of these deaths can be fully investigated," wrote Feinstein, in Tuesday=s letter. "I also ask for more information about what the California Horse Racing Board is doing to both investigate this matter and address some of the concerns that these incidents have rightly raised.@ The San Isidro training center in Argentina, home to Cont. p9 some 2,000 Thoroughbreds | Getty By Kelsey Riley IN TDN EUROPE TODAY OSBORNE KICK-STARTS BREEZE-UP SEASON There are few topics in racing debated so intensely and Trainer Jamie Osborne purchased a colt by Swiss Spirit (GB) for a passionately as that of raceday medication in the U.S., and in sale-topping £110,000 at the Tattersalls Ascot Breeze-Up Sale on particular Lasix. Those against it believe that America must come into line with international standards and appease the expectations of a society where public perception is becoming rapidly more relevant. What side one is on is no longer relevant; the Stronach Group-- with its sweeping reforms with the abolition of raceday medication at its California tracks at the forefrontBhas ensured that change is afoot. There are fears from some camps that the removal of Lasix from American horses would result in higher incidences of serious bleeding attacks, and thus depleted fields, plummeting handle and the demise of the sport. It is worth looking as a point of reference, however, at South America which, within the last six years, has phased out Lasix in black-type races--and in some cases even beyond--in its Part I countries. And the general consensus? It=s been business as usual. • Results of the 15Th Victoria Mile (G1)
FROM: Junichi Takada General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: May 17, 2020 SUBJECT: RESULTS OF THE 15TH VICTORIA MILE (G1) In accordance with the restructuring of JRA racing program for fillies/mares executed in the 2006 season, the Victoria Mile was established to give the older fillies/mares a stage to prove their ability among their own sex, in addition to the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, which had been the only G1 reserved for older fillies/mares. While the Queen Elizabeth is run over 2,200 meters and held in mid-November, the Victoria Mile is held in spring and provides female milers a chance to claim a G1 title without having a tough competition in a mixed field. The race, however, attracts not only fillies/mares suited to the mile distance but also outstanding runners from the middle-long distance group. Past victors include two-time Horse of the Year winner Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet; ’09), 2010 Horse of the Year Buena Vista (JPN, by Special Week; ’10) and 2010 fillies’ Triple Crown winner Apapane (JPN, by King Kamehameha; ’11). Meanwhile, both Verxina (JPN, by Deep Impact) and Straight Girl (JPN, by Fuji Kiseki) claimed consecutive Victoria Mile titles in 2013-14 and 2015-16, respectively. The top three finishers will earn automatic starting positions in the French G1 Prix Jacques le Marois (1,600m) where not only will they be exempted from paying registration fee but will be given a total of €20,000 as a transportation subsidy. The race also joined the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series this year, enabling its winner to earn automatic starting position in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1, 1,900m).

odern horse racing in Japan had its beginnings in racing events that were organized by foreign residents of Yokohama in 1862. In 1861, when Japan was about to move from the feudal system into the Meiji Restoration, foreign residents living in Yokohama, predominantly British, introduced the first Western-style horse racing by establishing the Yokohama Race Club to Japan. Western style horse racing was held in foreign enclaves, and hence, unfortunately, very little is known or recorded about initial era in Japan’s modern horse racing history. At about the same time that the name of the Japanese central city was changed from Edo to Tokyo, Western-style horse racing began to be found in the major metropolitan cities across the country. In 1906, the government embarked on a policy which tacitly allowed to bet. This led to the introduction of modern horse racing featuring sales of betting tickets in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and other metropolitan cities, from which most racing operations benefited. However, this profitable system was short lived; two years later, the government prohibited betting and instituted a system of paying direct subsidies for prize money and other horse racing expenses. During this subsequent period of government-subsidized horse racing, prominent legislators, businessmen, as well as breeders, began active efforts to introduce a horse racing law. Eventually the government began to take proactive position to promote horse racing in order to expand breeding in Japan and to improve quality of the Japanese horses. In 1923, horse racing legislation, so greatly desired by the horse racing industry, was enacted and led to the formation of 11 racing clubs.

Exclusive Topics for Horse Racing in Japan – Summer Edition – July 2021 The Japan Racing Association JRA-organized races and racegoers have fortunately been able to avoid the worst effects of the COVID-19 pandemic this year. Whereas races had to be held in front of empty stands from mid- January, venues gradually began to reopen their doors with capacity limitations as early as March, Nakayama Racecourse being the last to do so in April. With the exception of the February Stakes, the spring G1 series was able to be held with the attendance and support of fans. The World All-Star Jockeys, however, which is held annually in Sapporo in late August, had to be canceled for the second year in a row. Major spring events around the world resumed this year. At the Dubai World Cup day meeting in late March, Japanese contenders registered runner-up efforts in four G1 races on the card. The following month, they swept the top four places in Hong Kong’s Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1, 2,000m), where Loves Only You (JPN, M5, by Deep Impact) took home first prize. As contenders expected to compete abroad this autumn gradually coming to light, six home-bred nominees for this year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1, 2,400m) on October 3 were announced in May. The first potential Arc runner to be announced was Deep Bond (JPN, C4, by Kizuna), who was 10th, 5th and 4th in last year’s Triple Crown races, each time behind champion Contrail (JPN, C4, by Deep Impact) who made a clean sweep.
