Teachtaireacht ón gCathaoirleach

Longford GAA is delighted to welcome all patrons in attendance at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, and viewers online to an evening of great hurling entertainment. Despite the Covid restrictions and resulting fixtures congestion that have been placed on the GAA season in Longford, we have reached the penulti- mate stages of the Longford club hurling championship.

Wolfe Tones take on in this years decider. This game promises to be an exciting en- counter as Longford Slashers have not won the coveted Duignan cup since 2001. Having demonstrated a fine performance in the opening round of the competition and dethroning 2019 champions Clonguish Gaels, Slashers will be full of confidence in a contest against the very experienced Wolf Tones brigade and this creates the hallmarks for a hotly contested and exciting game. We wish all players, mentors and sup- porters of both clubs the very best on the day and that it may be a memorable day for everybody in- volved.

Both clubs, along with Clonguish have maintained a long tradition of supporting and playing the game of hurling in Longford, and thus helping to sustain within our , one of the greatest games in the world. Longford GAA would like to acknowledge the tremendous efforts made by all of the hurling fra- ternity within our county, as they work so hard to promote & improve the standards and awareness throughout the county. We also thank Derek Fahy, chairperson of the Hurling Committee for his efforts co-ordinating and promoting the game, especially at underage level. It is vitally important that the hard work continues along with a good working relationship between clubs to further improve the standards and numbers playing the game in Longford. Well done to everybody.

We welcome today’s referee James Judge from the Tooreen club in Mayo, along with his team of officials, to Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, to officiate at todays final. James is a very experienced referee and we wish him and his team the very best of luck and may it be a memorable experience for them also.

As we wish everybody an exciting and enjoyable experience today, please take care of your health and that of others by observing Covid guidelines, especially during after match celebrations. In helping to maintain guidelines, the presentation of the Duignan Cup to the winners will take place on the pitch. Please note that playing area is strictly off limits during and after presentation ceremony, and we request that patrons in attendance respect and co-operate with the stewards on this matter.

Following completion of the club hurling season today, the Longford intercounty hurling squad resume training immediately in preparation for the forthcoming Nicky Rackard competition in two weeks time. We wish manager Derek Frehill, and his management team the very best of luck.

Finally, on my own behalf, and Longford GAA, we wish everybody an enjoyable day, stay free of Covid, and safe home.

Extra Time / Winner on the Day Regulations

Phase 1 Proceed to Extra time as provided for in T.O. Cuid II (two periods of ten minutes each way).

Phase 2 (Penalty Kicks/Pucks)

If still level, a “penalty competition” will decide the outcome:

A) The relevant rules in T.O. Cuid II shall apply in relation to Penalty Kicks/Pucks, unless otherwise stated.

B) Penalties will be taken for goals only.

C) The Referee shall choose the end at which the penalty kicks/pucks will be taken. The end may be changed by the referee if it becomes unplayable during the course of the penalties.

D) The Referee will ensure two goal umpires are in place at the end in which the penalty kicks/pucks are to be taken. Both umpires shall position themselves on the end line at opposite side of the goals facing inwards.

• If a penalty is scored, the goal umpire, will wave the green flag once the referee has signalled • If the penalty is saved or missed the point umpire will signal a wide once the referee has signalled

E) Each team shall register 5 penalty takers, 1 goal keeper & 1 substitute goalkeeper with the referee and indicate in which order the penalty takers will take their penalties. (Penalty taker can also be a goalkeeper or a substitute goalkeeper.)

F) Referee shall toss a coin in the presence of the two captains to see which team will have the option of going first.

G) Only players who are on the field of play at the end of Phase 1 (i.e. end of Extra Time), shall be allowed to be registered as a penalty taker or goalkeeper. Exception: The substitute goalkeeper can come from the team panel.

H) A goalkeeper who is injured while the penalty kicks/pucks are being taken and is unable to continue as a goalkeeper may be replaced* by the substitute goalkeeper who has been nominated in advance, provided the referee is notified. In the event the substitute goalkeeper also gets injured, one of the registered penalty takers may replace* the substitute goalkeeper, provided the referee is notified. (* Once replaced, the goalkeeper / substitute goalkeeper cannot be reintro- duced as a goalkeeper at a later stage).

I) Subject to the conditions below both teams will take five penalty kicks/pucks which are taken alternately by the teams. The game is awarded to whichever team scores more of their five penalty kicks/pucks. If, before both teams have taken five penalty kicks/pucks, and one team has scored more goals that the other team could score, even if they were to com- plete their five penalty kicks/pucks, no more penalty kicks/pucks shall be taken

• If, after both teams have taken five penalty kicks/pucks and both teams have scored the same number of goals, the penalty competition will continue but in sudden death format using the same five registered players until one team has scored a goal more than the other from the same number of kicks/pucks.

• In sudden death, same sequence of penalty takers does not have to be followed from 1st round of penalty/pucks.

J) Each penalty kick/puck is taken by a different player. All registered players must take a penalty kick/puck before any player can take an additional penalty kick/puck.

K) The referee shall signal for the penalty to be taken. The penalty kick/puck is completed when the ball stops moving, goes out of play (including over the crossbar) or a goal is scored.

L) Only the players involved in the penalty taking competition, as well as the Referee, Linesmen and Umpires are permit- ted on the pitch. With the registered penalty takers located between the 45m & 65m lines closest to the end selected by the referee. Goalkeepers to be located 20m from the goals.

M) All other players (including substitute goalkeepers), managers, officials, backroom personnel etc should be at their designated sideline area, and off the field of play when the penalty-taking competition is taking place.
