AUGUST 22-24, 2019 STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO Letter from the Chairman JENNIFER SCHUBERT-AKIN AUGUST 22-24, 2019 STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO Letter from the Chairman JENNIFER SCHUBERT-AKIN As the Steamboat Institute enters Welcome to its 2nd decade of “inspiring Americans to greatness,” we are looking to the future – specifically, to the future leadership that will preserve and protect our cherished freedoms. Look around you this weekend and you will see our 29 emerging leaders from across the U.S., who are attending this weekend on scholarships, thanks to our many generous supporters. And, look through this program to see the young, rising star journalists – our 7 Tony Blankley Fellows – who are speaking and moderating panels. We will also feature a debate on the future of our country: “Socialism vs Capitalism: Is America destined to become a socialist nation?” With this debate shaping up to be the central issue of the 2020 Presidential campaign, we are taking this debate on the road with our Campus Liberty Tour in September, visiting the University of Maryland, University of Texas – Austin, and University of Colorado – Denver. What about the future of free speech on college campuses? Our Courage in Education award will recognize a brave professor who dared to challenge his administration for the lack of ideological balance in the school’s extracurricular programming. For this simple act, he was subjected to a firestorm of criticism, including calls for his tenure to be reviewed, threats against his family, and destruction of his personal property on campus. And, closely following the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, we are excited to celebrate the future of the space program with NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. But, as we look to the future, we must find creative new ways to persuade people from across the political and social spectrum of the value of individual liberty, freedom from excessive government regulation, and personal responsibility. With our growing film Featuring Keynote festival, now in its third year, we are aiming to do just that. We hope you will take time to visit with our next generation of Dinner Speaker leaders, take in a good movie, sip a Coyote Gold Margarita, and enjoy the freedom we have to gather in this beautiful Rocky Mountain setting. ALAN DERSHOWITZ We are honored to have you with us as we begin our 2nd decade Professor Emeritus, Harvard Law School of “inspiring Americans to greatness.” Jennifer Schubert-Akin The Steamboat Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non- partisan organization. Pearl had gone to Pakistan to follow up on a story that ran earlier in another U.S. daily, The Boston Globe, that claimed the facilitator of the “shoe bomber” Richard Reid was in Pakistan. British-born Reid is serving a life sentence without parole in a U.S. jail on terrorism charges after he tried to detonate explosives in his shoe to bring down a trans Atlantic flight. But Nomani had a problem; you might say a mighty problem: She was going to do this as an independent project, not connected with the Journal. She needed money; she needed a home for the project; and, equally important, she needed help to carry out a gigantic investigation.

“Consider the Source” A Resource Guide to Liberal, Conservative and Nonpartisan Periodicals 30 East Lake Street ∙ Chicago, IL 60601 HWC Library – Room 501 312.553.5760 ver heard the saying “consider the source” in response to something that was questioned? Well, the same advice applies to what you read – consider the source. When conducting research, bear in mind that periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers) may have varying points-of-view, biases, and/or E political leanings. Here are some questions to ask when considering using a periodical source: Is there a bias in the publication or is it non-partisan? Who is the sponsor (publisher or benefactor) of the publication? What is the agenda of the sponsor – to simply share information or to influence social or political change? Some publications have specific political perspectives and outright state what they are, as in Dissent Magazine (self-described as “a magazine of the left”) or National Review’s boost of, “we give you the right view and back it up.” Still, there are other publications that do not clearly state their political leanings; but over time have been deemed as left- or right-leaning based on such factors as the points- of-view of their opinion columnists, the make-up of their editorial staff, and/or their endorsements of politicians. Many newspapers fall into this rather opaque category. A good rule of thumb to use in determining whether a publication is liberal or conservative has been provided by Media Research Center’s L. Brent Bozell III: “if the paper never met a conservative cause it didn’t like, it’s conservative, and if it never met a liberal cause it didn’t like, it’s liberal.” Outlined in the following pages is an annotated listing of publications that have been categorized as conservative, liberal, non-partisan and religious.

  • What's Needed for Health Care Reform
What’s Needed for Health Care Reform: Personalized Care That Puts You and Your Doctor in Charge THE DAILY SIGNAL | Marie Fishpaw / Grace-Marie Turner / @gracemarietweet / September 22, 2020 A patient-focused approach to health care reform would make insurance and care more affordable, while better protecting those with preexisting conditions and chronic health challenges. (Photo: Pabradyphoto/ iStock/Getty Images Plus) COMMENTARY BY Marie Fishpaw Grace-Marie Turner | @gracemarietweet Marie Fishpaw is director of domestic policy Grace-Marie Turner is president of studies at The Heritage Foundation’s the Galen Institute. Institute for Family, Community and Opportunity. The following is an open letter to the American people from 68 leaders participating in the Health Policy Consensus Group. The full list of signatories follows the letter. The nation faces a clear choice between two paths for America’s health care future: • One path is largely controlled by the government, where you get few choices and no options to escape. • The other is controlled by you and doctors, leading to more choices, lower costs, and improved quality and access. The first path builds on failure. Approaches like a public option—”Medicare for All” on the installment plan—double down on Obamacare’s failures, especially its soaring costs and tightening restrictions on access to the doctors and hospitals you want and need. Make no mistake: No matter how their ideas are packaged, the left’s ultimate goal is Medicare for All—legislation sponsored by a majority of House Democrats that is full of empty promises and that would outlaw your existing coverage and put you on a government-run plan.

U.S. Role in the World: Background and Issues for Congress Ronald O'Rourke Specialist in Naval Affairs Michael Moodie Assistant Director and Senior Specialist in Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade Updated February 24, 2020 Congressional Research Service 7-.... www.crs.gov R44891 U.S. Role in the World: Background and Issues for Congress Summary The U.S. role in the world refers to the overall character, purpose, or direction of U.S. participation in international affairs and the country’s overall relationship to the rest of the world. The U.S. role in the world can be viewed as establishing the overall context or framework for U.S. policymakers for developing, implementing, and measuring the success of U.S. policies and actions on specific international issues, and for foreign countries or other observers for interpreting and understanding U.S. actions on the world stage. While descriptions of the U.S. role in the world since the end of World War II vary in their specifics, it can be described in general terms as consisting of four key elements: global leadership; defense and promotion of the liberal international order; defense and promotion of freedom, democracy, and human rights; and prevention of the emergence of regional hegemons in Eurasia. The issue for Congress is whether the U.S. role in the world is changing, and if so, what implications this might have for the United States and the world. A change in the U.S. role could have significant and even profound effects on U.S. security, freedom, and prosperity. It could significantly affect U.S.
