They enable experimental or other observational evidence ,-<'-'"LUe tively to select a physical theory from out of a of alternatives-a formal deductive method of testing which is (as I will show) distinct from the tional hypothetico-deductive one. I believe that study here of test-theory methodology is important for philosophers of science if they are properly to understand (i) methods of theory appraisal in physics, (ii) certain key concep­ tual issues in the foundations of physics, and (iii) more generally, the growth and structure of physical theory (history). I believe that this study is portant also for physicists who desire a clearer understanding of the power, limitations, and conceptual presuppositions of the test-theory method. (i) Methods. I show how test theories establish relations between ical theory and phenomena which are at once stronger and more systematic relations established by the hypothetico-deductive method. I use this result to defend some positivist methodological doctrines which philosophers today generally reject. I also use the result to criticise certain post-positivist doctrines which are meant to replace the very positivist doctrines I aim to defend. I compare some philosophical accounts of empirical confirmation with test-theory methodology in order to illuminate some features of the test-theory method and criticise standard philosophical accounts of confir­ mation. In this discussion I explore limitations of the test-theory method and identify general conditions which both knowledge and the world must satisfy if the method is to work. (U) Foundations. I address some key issues in foundations of physics, concerning the nature of space, time and causation. I discllss how test-theory methodology reveals the extent to which the very foundations of physics are empirically determinable. This extent is limited I argue: my discussion points to the furthest application but also to some notable tations of the test-theory approach. (iii) History. I argue Newton pioneered use of test-theory con- structions in theoretical physics, and I show how twentieth century physicists have brought the test-theory method to a high level of sophistication. I ar­ gue both that the test-theory idea makes possible a coherent view of the history of physics, and that the history of physics deepens our appreciation of power of the test-theory idea. There is unity, I argue, at the level of test-theory methodology across the seemingly disparate historical phases of physical inquiry (classical versus modern). is power, I maintain, in a method which can fruitfully be applied in seemingly diverse conceptual (Newtonian versus Einsteinian). Preface Test-theory constructions allow empirical evidence to select a physical theory by displaying that theory as falling within a mathematically defined, "parameterised", family of alternatives. The parameter in question is ap­ propriately chosen so that (granting some background assumptions which have been clearly delimited and are typically unproblematic) its value may be definitively "measured" by specific experimental or other observational evidence. The empirical selection of physical theories from a class of al­ ternatives is one very important function of test-theory constructions. In this dissertation I will also draw attention to other key functions, including (1) the way in which test theories provide a means of classifying physical theories, and thereby a measure of the "closeness" of one physical theory to another, and (2) the use of test theories as tools for discovery in theoretical physics. Test-theory methodology is the invention of physicists not philosophers. Even the name 'test theory' has been coined by physicists. The development of test-theory methodology illustrates how methods of empirical discovery in science are themselves discovered empirically. theories have delivered to theoretical physicists the kind of theories they seek-theories of great explanatory power. Physicists themselves endorse test-theory method on the quasi-empirical cum pragmatic basis that it works, that it furthers science's aim to provide explanations of natural phenomena. These facts about theoretical physics make clear how methodologically reflective physi­ cists really are. Thus, physicists challenge philosophers of science to attend not only to tacit, or implicit, aspects of the practice of physics, but also to patterns in that practice which physicists themselves have made explicit. As far as I am aware I am first philosopher of science to respond to this challenge by adopting the terminology that physicists themselves use. Physicists have been test theories for some time now. l:tecent studies in the history and philosophy of science have championed accounts of empirical confirmation involving "demonstrative" and "eliminative" in­ duction, "deduction from phenomena", and "bootstrap" inferences. I will show how these accounts support the same kind of relations between theory and evidence that are established by means of test theories. I will argue that both test-theory methodology and bootstrap methodology, in particu­ lar, make credible certain methodological tenets of logical positivism which many philosophers today reject. Besides demonstrating the importance of test for philosophers of science I wish also in dissertation to help physicists better appreciate the test-theory method. I have stated already my belief physicists today understand well the test-theory method which they have developed. Yet I also believe that a historically informed philosophical study of this method, viii PrE'face such as I undertake in this dissertation, can lead to even greater under­ standing, and possibly even to more significant application, of it. Physicists today emphasise the method's use in testing physical theories-hence the name 'test theory'. But one use of the test-theory method which its con­ temporary practitioners do not stress is its potential as a tool for theoretical discovery. I will argue, on the basis of its empirical credentials, its appli­ cability in a wide range of conceptual contexts, and also on the basis of its unifying power, that the test-theory method is an appropriate method to discover theories which further unify the fundamental physical interac­ tions. I will endeavour to show physicists, in other words, that the label 'test theory' desperately understates the significance and worth of this method. As far as I am aware, there have been no studies of test theories quite like the study that I undertake in this dissertation. In his excellent physics text Theory and Experiment in Gravitational Physics Clifford Will pro­ vides theoretical analyses of test theories for relativistic gravitation, and surveys the experimental results used to determine test-theory parameters. In more l~ecent articles Will also discusses test-theory constructions for rel­ ativistic kinematics. vVnat \iVill does not clo--being a physicist rather than a philosopher-is discuss the test-theory method in a general way. He does not compare the method with other approaches to confirmation, nor does he analyse the conceptual presuppositions of the method. By not investigating these matters Will fails to provide physicists with a clear sense of just how powerful the method is and how important it could be for the future uni­ fication of the fundamental physical interactions.

We see complex analysis arise in two main ways: 1. Inverse Problems that are or can be reduced to two dimensional problems. Here we solve inverse problems for PDEs and integral equations using methods from complex analysis where the complex variable represents a spatial variable in the plane. This includes various kinds of tomographic methods involving weighted line integrals, and is used in medial imaging and non-destructive testing. In electromagnetic problems governed by some form of Maxwell’s equation complex analysis is typically used for a plane approximation to a two dimensional problem. 2. Frequency domain methods in which the complex variable is the Fourier-Laplace transform variable. The Hilbert transform is ubiquitous in signal processing (everyone has one implemented in their home!) due to the analytic representation of a signal. In inverse spectral problems analyticity with respect to a spectral parameter plays an important role. Industrial Electromagnetic Inverse Problems Many inverse problems involve imaging the inside from measuring on the outside. Here are some industrial applied inverse problems in electromagnetics I Ground penetrating radar, used for civil engineering eg finding burried pipes and cables. Similar also to microwave imaging (security, medicine) and radar. I Electrical resistivity/polarizability tomography. Used to locate underground pollution plumes, salt water ingress, buried structures, minerals. Also used for industrial process monitoring (pipes, mixing vessels etc). I Metal detecting and inductive imaging. Used to locate weapons on people, find land mines and unexploded ordnance, food safety, scrap metal sorting, locating reinforcing bars in concrete, non-destructive testing, archaeology, etc.

Abstract This thesis deals with the systematic treatment of quantum-mechanical systems situated in post-Newtonian gravitational fields. At first, we develop a framework of geometric background structures that define the notions of a post-Newtonian expansion and of weak gravitational fields. Next, we consider the description of single quantum particles under gravity, before continuing with a simple composite system. Starting from clearly spelled-out assumptions, our systematic approach allows to properly derive the post-Newtonian coupling of quantum-mechanical systems to gravity based on first principles. This sets it apart from other, more heuristic approaches that are commonly employed, for example, in the description of quantum-optical experiments under gravitational influence. Regarding single particles, we compare simple canonical quantisation of a free particle in curved spacetime to formal expansions of the minimally coupled Klein– Gordon equation, which may be motivated from the framework of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes.

Anderson* Nancy Cartwright, The Dappled World: Essays on the Perimeter of Science (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1999), ISBN 0-521-64411-9, viii+247 pp. In their much discussed recent book, Alan Sokal and Jean Bricmont (1998) deride the French deconstructionists by quoting repeatedly from passages in which it is evident even to the non-specialist that the jargon of science is being outrageously misused and being given meanings to which it is not remotely relevant. Their task of ‘deconstructing the deconstructors’ is made far easier by the evident scientific illiteracy of their subjects. Nancy Cartwright is a tougher nut to crack. Her apparent competence with the actual process of science, and even with the terminology and some of the mathematical language, may lead some of her colleagues in the philosophy of science and even some scientists astray. Yet on a deeper level of real understanding it is clear that she just does not get it. Her thesis here is not quite the deconstruction of science, although she seems to quote with approval from some of the deconstructionist literature. She seems no longer to hold to the thesis of her earlier book (Cartwright, 1983) that ‘the laws of physics lie’. But I sense that the present book is almost equally subversive, in that it will be useful to the creationists and to many less extreme anti-science polemicists with agendas likely to benefit from her rather solipsistic views.

We discuss the weak gravitational field created by isolated matter sources in the Randall-Sundrum brane-world. In the case of two branes of opposite tension, linearized Brans-Dicke (BD) gravity is recovered on either wall, with different BD parameters. On the wall with positive tension the BD parameter is larger than 3000 provided that the separation between walls is larger than 4 times the AdS radius. For the wall of negative tension the BD parameter is always negative. In either case, shadow matter from the other wall gravitates upon us. For equal Newtonian mass, light deflection from shadow matter is 25 % weaker than from ordinary matter. For the case of a single wall of posi- tive tension, Einstein gravity is recovered on the wall to leading order, and if the source is stationary the field stays localized near the wall. We calculate the leading Kaluza-Klein corrections to the linearized gravitational field of a non-relativistic spherical object and find that the metric is different from the Schwarzschild solution at large distances. We believe that our linearized solu- tion corresponds to the field far from the horizon after gravitational collapse of matter on the brane. Our approach is based on an exact decomposition formula which reduces the solution of the sound scattering problem to that of a N dimensional linear system, and characterizes resonant frequencies as the solutions to a N-dimensional nonlinear eigenvalue problem. Under a simplicity assumptions on the eigenvalues of the capacitance matrix, we prove the analyticity of the scattering resonances with respect to the square root of the contrast parameter, and we provide a deterministic algorithm allowing to compute all terms of the corresponding Puiseux series.

General relativity is definitely a beautiful theory of gravitation. However, we may have alternative approaches to explain all gravitational phenomena. We have also faced on some fundamental unknowns in the Universe, such as dark energy and dark matter, which might be solved by new theory of gravitation. The candidates as an alternative gravitational theory should satisfy at least three criteria for viability; (1) self-consistency, (2) completeness, and (3) agreement with past experiments. (1) Despite the possible existence of long-range gravitational fields in addition to the metric in various metric theories of gravity, the postulates of those theories demand that matter and non-gravitational fields be completely oblivious to them. Chiaverini National Institute of Standards and Technology, Boulder, CO 80305, USA Various theories of physics beyond the Standard Model, including attempts to resolve the hierarchy problem, include deviations from Newtonian gravity at short distances. Tabletop measurements of gravity can provide constraints on these theories. We have built an apparatus to measure the force between masses separated by tens of microns. The experiment utilizes a micromachined silicon cantilever as a force sensor and small pieces of gold as masses. In this paper, the experimental apparatus and procedure are described. 1. INTRODUCTION Most people think they know something about gravity and the science surrounding it. Perhaps they know that it is because of gravity that things fall to the ground and maybe they have even heard the story of Isaac Newton being inspired by a falling apple. From billboards, tshirts, and coffee mugs, people know of Albert Einstein and his theory of relativity. In spite of this great popular recognition, gravity is still poorly understood by physicists. Gravity, alone among the four forces in nature, does not fit into the Standard Model that otherwise encompasses observed particles and forces. The challenge to describe gravity with the same tools used to describe Standard Model forces has led to dozens of theories, none of which has been proven and many of which cannot be experimentally tested. Introduction by the Organisers Differential equations have been a major branch of pure and applied mathematics since their inauguration in the mid 17th century. While their history has been well studied, it remains a vital field of on-going investigation, with the emergence of new connections with other parts of mathematics, fertile interplay with applied subjects, interesting reformulation of basic problems and theory in various periods, new vistas in the 20th century, and so on. In this meeting we considered some of the principal parts of this story, from the launch with Newton and Leibniz up to around 1950. ‘Differential equations’ began with Leibniz, the Bernoulli brothers and others from the 1680s, not long after Newton’s ‘fluxional equations’ in the 1670s. Appli- cations were made largely to geometry and mechanics; isoperimetrical problems were exercises in optimisation. Most 18th-century developments consolidated the Leibnizian tradition, extend- ing its multi-variate form, thus leading to partial differential equations. General- isation of isoperimetrical problems led to the calculus of variations. New figures appeared, especially Euler, Daniel Bernoulli, Lagrange and Laplace. Development of the general theory of solutions included singular ones, functional solutions and those by infinite series. Many applications were made to mechanics, especially to astronomy and continuous media. In the 19th century: general theory was enriched by development of the un- derstanding of general and particular solutions, and of existence theorems.
