Dendrelaphis Caudolineatus Flavescensnov HERPETOLOGICAL JOURNAL, Vol. 4, pp. 136-144 (1994) CONTRIBUTION TO THE SNAKE FAUNA OF THE SULU ARCHIPELAGO, WITH THE DESCRIPTION OF A NEW SUBSPECIES OF DENDRELAPHIS CAUDOLINEA TUS (GRAY, 1834) MAREN GAULKE Muhliusstrasse 84, 24103 Kiel, Germany On the islands of Bongao, Sanga Sanga, Siasi, Sibutu, and Tawitawi (all in the Sulu Archipelago) a total of 18 species/subspecies of land snakes were recorded. The observations on the different islands resulted in many new distribution records, 19 of which are published here for the first time: five for Bongao, four for Sanga Sanga, four for Siasi, and six for Tawitawi. One ofthe snakes (Boiga drapiezii drapiezii Boie, 1827) was not known before from the Philippines and the endemic subspecies Dendrelaphis caudolineatus flavescensnov. subsp. is described. The Sulu Archipelago shelters several endemic species/subspecies (e.g. Maticora intestinalis suluensis [Steindachner, 1891 ], Oligodon meyerinkii [Steindachner, 1891]). Other members of its land snake faunaare widely distributed on Borneo but occur nowhere else in the Philippines (B. d. drapiezii, Sibynophis geminatus geminatus Boie, 1827), while some are only known fromthe Philippines (Elaphe erythrura erythrura [Dumeril, Bibron & Dumeril, 1854], Chrysopelea paradisi paradisi Boie, 1826). The snake fauna of Hoa Binh contains some species of conservation concern with seven species listed in the Governmental Decree No. 32/2006/ND-CP (2006), nine species listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book (2007), and three species listed in the IUCN Red List (2018). Mehrere phänetisch unterschiedliche Cluster sind erkennbar. Geografisch werden diese Cluster durch wichtige biogeographische Barrieren wie zum Beispiel der Isthmus von Kra, die Wallace Linie und die Weber Linie getrennt. Die indochinesischen und die Sunda-Populationen werden trotz morphologischer Unterschiede zwischen ihnen unter dem Namen D. pictus zusammengefaßt, da sie als nicht voneinander unabhängig betrachtet werden. Zwei weitere Cluster werden als eigenständige Arten betrachtet, da diese Populationen ohne Zweifel unabhängige evolutionäre Linien bilden. Der erste dieser Cluster umfaßt die Populationen der Philippinen und Sulawesis. Diese Populationen werden unter dem Namen D. marenae beschrieben. Diese Art unterscheidet sich von den bisher benannten Formen in der Färbung, der Größe der Vertebralschuppen, der Anzahl der Subcaudalia und der Schwanzlänge. Der zweite Cluster umfaßt die Populationen der Molukken, welche mit dem Namen D. grismeri belegt werden. Diese Art zeichnet sich durch die Anzahl der Ventralia, Subcaudalia und Temporalia sowie die Schwanzlänge aus. ABSTRACT The Southeast Asian, Indonesian and Philippine forms of the polytypic Dendrelaphis pictus (GMELIN, 1789) are reviewed using multivariate analyses. Several distinct phenetic clusters are discerned. Geographically, these clusters are separated by important biogeographic boundaries, such as the Isthmus of Kra, Wallace’s line and Weber’s line.

The diverse group of Asian wolf snakes of the genus Lycodon represents one of many poorly understood radiations of advanced snakes in the superfamily Colubroidea. Outside of three species having previously been represented in higher-level phylogenetic analyses, nothing is known of the relationships among species in this unique, moderately diverse, group. The genus occurs widely from central to Southeast Asia, and contains both widespread species to forms that are endemic to small islands. One-third of the diversity is found in the Philippine archipelago. Both morphological similarity and highly variable diagnostic characters have contributed to confusion over species-level diversity. Additionally, the placement of the genus among genera in the subfamily Colubrinae remains uncertain, although previous studies have supported a close relationship with the genus Dinodon. In this study, we provide the first estimate of phylogenetic relationships within the genus Lycodon using a new multi- locus data set. We provide statistical tests of monophyly based on biogeographic, morpho- logical and taxonomic hypotheses. With few exceptions, we are able to reject many of these hypotheses, indicating a need for taxonomic revisions and a reconsideration of the group's biogeography. Mapping of color patterns on our preferred phylogenetic tree suggests that banded and blotched types have evolved on multiple occasions in the history of the genus, whereas the solid-color (and possibly speckled) morphotype color patterns evolved only once.
