Local Sports Report -- September 18 Local Sports Report -- September 18 Posted by TBN On 09/17/2013 Local Sports Report with Buddy Long (Click Here) Davis smashes League Leading 51st Homer, makes Orioles History in huge win over Red Sox!!!!! Hello Sports Fans, I’m Buddy Long. And this is the Wednesday September 18th edition of Southern Maryland Sports. Baltimore Orioles: Orioles close to within 2 games of Wild Card spot!!! Chris Davis etched his name in the Baltimore Orioles record books Tuesday night at Fenway Park, not only belting out his Major League leading 51st homer of the year, but also becoming the 1st Oriole player to accomplish that feat, surpassing Brady Anderson, as the Orioles topped the Boston Red Sox 3-2 in the first game of a most critical 3 game series. While Davis was making history, helping to tie the game, Danny Valencias triple, followed by Matt Wieters sacrifice fly proved to be the game winner as Baltimore closed the gap in the Wild Card race, just 2 games back of both the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers for one of the final 2 spots in the American League. Jim Johnson recorded his 46th save of the season while reliever Tommy Hunter got the win on the night, improving to 6-4. The Orioles and Red Sox will square off again this evening at Fenway Park, with the O’s sending Wei Yin Chen to the mound against Jake Peavy. Here‘s a look at some of the other AL scores: Toronto 2 New York Yankees 0 Texas 7 Tampa Bay 1 Cleveland 5 Kansas City 3 Washington Nationals: Nats take a pair from the Braves!!!! Flags flew at half staff Tuesday at Nationals Park in remembrance of the lives lost at the Navy Yard just 24 hours prior. Once the first pitch was thrown, Washington re-engaged in its continuing battle to get back in the National League Playoff race, scoring twice in the 9th inning in Game #1 to edge NL East leading Atlanta Braves 6-5. In the nightcap, rookie Tanner Roark allowed just 2 hits, struck out 6, and retired the final 13 batters he faced as the Nats ended a perfect day, sweeping the Braves with a 4-0 win. Roark, who improved his record to 7-0, got some offensive help from Ryan Zimmerman, who belted out his 25th homer of the year. With the clock ticking, the Nats keep pace with the Cincinnati Reds for the final Wild Card spot in the National League, keeping within four and a half games. The two teams will wrap up their series this evening with Russ Ohlendorf on the mound for the Nats going against Alex Wood. Game time is 7pm. Here’s a look at some of the other key National League scores: San Diego 5 Pittsburgh 2 Cincinnati 10 Houston 0 St Louis 11 Colorado 4 Southern Maryland Blue Crabs: Playoffs begin tonight!!! Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings February 12, 2019 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1888-The Reds begin a six-week exhibition tour through Texas, Louisiana and Alabama MLB.COM Duke returns to Reds on one-year deal Cincy designates right-hander Lopez for assignment in corresponding move By Mark Sheldon MLB.com @m_sheldon Feb. 11th, 2019 GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- This past offseason featured multiple trades by the Reds, but Monday officially marked their first free-agent acquisition, when lefty reliever Zach Duke signed a one-year, $2 million contract. To make room for Duke, right-handed pitcher Jose Lopez was designated for assignment. Duke, who will turn 36 in April, agreed to terms with Cincinnati on Feb. 2. The club will get added veteran presence in its bullpen. He is a 14-year Major League veteran. In 72 games combined for the Twins and Mariners last season, Duke was 5-5 with a 4.15 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. Over 52 innings, he allowed 57 hits including one home run with 21 walks and 51 strikeouts. Left-handed hitters batted .220 against him, compared to .311 by right-handed hitters. But the Reds do not view the ground-ball pitcher as a one-out left-handed situational reliever. "He's a guy that likes to pitch a full inning and expects to be in there to pitch a full inning," Reds president of baseball operations Dick Williams said. "He's had a lot of success against lefties, but we are comfortable that he's not necessarily going to be a one-out guy." Duke is returning to the Reds after pitching for them during the 2013 season, a stint that helped turn his career around after being released by the Nationals earlier that year.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES THURSDAY, AUGUST 24, 2017 NATIONAL TREASURE With a victory on Sunday at San Diego, Washington Nationals starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez improved to 12-5 on the season with a 2.39 ERA. The 31-year-old left-hander has won each of his last four starts, permitting just one earned run over 27.2 innings pitched (0.33 ERA). According to Elias, the only other pitchers in Expos/Nationals history to post an ERA below 0.50 over four straight starts within one season (all wins), are Charlie Lea (0.28 in 1981), Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez (0.30 in 1997) and Javier Vazquez (0.28 in 2001). With his next start, Gio will attempt to become the fourth pitcher in Montreal/Washington franchise history to pick up a victory while tossing at least 6.0 innings and allowing one earned run or less in fi ve consecutive starts, and just the second to do so in a single season. Jordan Zimmermann accomplished the feat in six consecutive starts in 2012, while Martinez did so in six straight starts across the 1996-97 seasons. Gonzalez’ teammate Joe Ross compiled a streak of fi ve such starts between 2015-16. The two-time All-Star has now pitched into the sixth inning in 19 consecutive starts, and he has lasted at least 5.0 innings in 25 straight outings. Steve Rogers holds the all-time franchise mark of 62 straight starts of at least 5.0 innings pitched from May 22, 1977 - April 15, 1979.
