The Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) of the IQAC for the year 2011-12

Part A:

The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year.

i. Objectives designed by IQAC in the beginning of the year: 1. To craft the institution to sign MOUs with Foreign Universities for student and research up gradation 2. To provide free education to deserving students 3. To collaborate with more industries to establish Industry – Academia Partnership with a view to provide better inputs to students and enhance placement portal 4. To connect the students with the Alma matter ii. Outcome achieved:

1. MOU was signed with the Department of Physical Chemistry and Materials Science, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Budapest- 1521, HUNGARY in December, 2011. 2. The Alumni Association was recommended to provide free education to 30 students 3. In the process of collaborating with companies for strengthening placements and faculty with more industry exposure were recruited 4. The outgoing students gladly became a fraction of the Alumni Association Part B: 1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the Institution:

1.Students’ Interface Programme A Students’ Interface Programme was organised with the Former President of , Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on 20.2.12 at 10 am at GRD Auditorium, PSG College of Arts & Science. Thiru NC Nandagopalan, Secretary of the College welcomed the gathering and appealed to the students to actively participate in this unique programme. Shri L Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee, PSG & Sons’ Charities presided over the programme and requested the students to unleash the reservations within themselves and gain insights leading to the birth of a vibrant developed India. His Excellency Former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam gave a clarion call to the students to acquire four great qualities of having a big aim, acquiring knowledge, working hard and being determined which will take them a long way towards success. Over 1000 students from various disciplines of the College and from other sister PSG Institutions participated in this programme. Principal Dr R Rajendran thanked the Management and all others for the very cause and success of this programme. 2.Staff Day Celebrations The Staff Day Celebrations of PSG & Sons’ Charities was held on 20.2.12 at GRD Auditorium, PSG College of Arts and Science from 4 pm to 8.30 pm in three phases. Dr JS Bhuvaneswaran, Medical Director, PSG Super Specialty Hospital briefed on the Staff Day Programmes. Shri L Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee, PSG & Sons’ Charities, Mr Vidyaprakash- son of Dr GR Damodharan and Dr AV Varadharajan an alumnus distributed the Silver Jubilee Proficiency Awards to 15 children of the PSG Industrial Institute and PSG NFD Staff Club and to the winners of various sports, cultural and literary events of the Staff Day Celebrations. Dr AV Varadharajan, one of the close associates of Prof GR Damodharan, Former Vice- Chancellor of University of Madras and Architect of PSG Institutions recalled his fond memories with him. Managing Trustee, Shri L Gopalakrishnan, PSG & Sons’ Charities, presided over the function. Dr BK Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore, the Chief Guest of the 2

day, distributed the Service Awards to 12 employees who have completed 25 years of service and mementos to the 8 retired staff. The Chief Guest in his address expressed that by following the foot prints of Prof GR Damodharan one can achieve human excellence. A stage play by Mr SV Sekher ‘Yaam erukka bhayem yeen’ was witnessed by more than 1000 staff of the PSG Institutions and their family members. 3.Free Laptop providing Ceremony The Free Laptop Providing Ceremony under the special scheme instituted by the Hon’ Chief Minister of TamilNadu Dr J Jayalalitha was organised on 22.4.12 at GRD Auditoruim, PSG College of Arts and Science. It was a memorable day for every under graduate student out over here as they were indeed fortunate to possess a laptop each, which is a dream turned reality to them. Hon’ Minister of Agriculture Mr S Dhamodaran distributed the free laptops to 1475 students of the aided and self financing under graduate programmes. Mr M Karunakaran, Collector, Coimbatore District, Mayor of Coimbatore Corporation Mr SM Velusamy and Dr A Santhosham, Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Coimbatore also graced the occasion. 4. XXVI Graduation Day The XXVI Graduation Day of PSG College of Arts and Science was held on 23.4.12 at GRD Auditorium at 2 PM saw 792 Graduates, 302 Post Graduates and 9 PhD Scholars receiving their degrees. Dr Synthia Pandian, Vice-Chairperson, Tamilnadu State Council for Higher Education in her Graduation Day Address lauded PSG College of Arts & Science for equipping graduates with the required skills for their professional and personal life. Congratulating the graduates, she advised them to be aware of future changes, and move with the times, arming themselves with acquiring good citizenship qualities in this knowledge era. Dr H Devaraj, Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Madras was the Guest of Honor. Shri L Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee, PSG Institutions presided over the function and honored 38 rank holders. (22 were graduates and 16 post graduates). Dr R Rajendran, Principal, PSG College of Arts & Science welcomed the gathering and presented the Annual Report.

Dr Madhan Shankar SR, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology got the Best Paper Award for the paper entitled “Estimation of Genetic Diversity in Gmelina Seed Orchards” at the National Conference on “Conservation of Nature’s endless and unexplored resources”, organized by Department of Botany and Environmental Sciences, All Saints College, Thiruvananthapuram on 1.10.11 & 2.10.11. 3. Dr Michael A, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology received the Life Time Achievement Award for his 25 years of teaching and research contribution to Microbiology at 9th Annual Conference of Indian Association of Applied Microbiologists held at Periyar University, Salem on 14.10.11 and 15.10.11. 4. Dr Mohanasundaram V, Associate Professor, Department of Economics was elected as the President of Association of Economists of (AET) for the year 2011-12 and delivered the Presidential Address at Gobi Arts & Science College, Gobi on 21.11.11. 5. Mr Jayaprakash CR, Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication chaired a session on “Media and Environmental Disaster” at Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, on 12.1.12 and 13.1.12. 6. Mr Jayaprakash CR, Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication was awarded the Dr. Ravi Sankaran Award for Ground Level Conservation in the 2nd Symposium on Animal Welfare and Conservation at Nirmala College for Women, Coimbatore on 24.1.12 – 25.1.12 for his ground level efforts and initiative towards conservation. 7. Mr Jayaprakash CR, Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication chaired a session on “Social Network Sites and Development” in the UGC sponsored National Seminar on “Social Networking Media: Current Trends and Research Challenges, at Sri Padmavathi Mahila University, Tirupati on 9.2.12 and 10.2.12. 8. Dr Rajendran R, Principal was given the “Best research paper award” for the poster entitled “Ethnomedical Analysis of the Vitex Nigundo Leaf Extracts Using Antimicrobial and Phytochemical Studies” at the National Conference on Microbiological Research in 21st Century organized by the Department of

Microbiology, School of Life Sciences, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli, on 27.2.12 and 28.2.12. 9. Dr Rajendran R, Principal was awarded the prestigious DBT-CREST Award (Cutting Edge Research Enhancement and Scientific Training) to carry his research work at the Department of Physical Chemistry and Materials Science, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Hungary, granted by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India for the year 2011-12. 15. Internal resources generated: (Conduct of outside exams like CAT, MAT, ……..) Rent from conduct of outside exams is Rs 94, 200 for this academic year. 16.Details of Departments getting SAP, COSIST (ASSIST)/DST. FIST, etc. Assistance/Recognition: . FIST has sanctioned an amount of Rs. 62, 50,000 to the Department of Environmental Science to strengthen the teaching and research facilities in the Science Departments of the College on 7.2.12. 17. Community services: (conducted by Department, NSS & etc.) 1. NSS along with ECO Club screened a short film about myths and signs of SNAKE BITES! at GRD Auditorium. 200 volunteers participated in the event on 7.9.11. 2. 10 volunteers attended an Eye Donation programme at Aravind Eye Hospital on 8.9.11. 3. A guest lecture on “Friendly Health” was given by Dr K Kanjana, Head, Department of Clinical Nutrition, PSG College of Arts and Science on 23.9.11 for the girl students of the NSS. 4. More than 100 volunteers participated in the awareness rally about the road safety, distributed the pamphlets to the public about the rules to be followed for the road safety from 1.1.12 to 7.1.12. 5. On the eve of National Voter’s Day, about 100 volunteers participated in the human chain on the Avinashi Road near the College and made awareness about the right for voting to the general public on 25.1.12. 6. Two boys and four girls’ (II UG&IUG) students along with NSS Programme Officers Mr Kandasubramanian S and Mr Ramesh B went for a 7 days special camp to Muthugovnden pudur, Coimbatore from 7.3.12 to 13.3.12. NSS Volunters cleaned the

school & performed awareness programme like stage shows, and seminars to the village people. 7. An awareness lecture was given to 50 volunteers about the mode of spread of HIV and its prevention by Dr. M. Senguttuvan, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, PSG CAS on 15.3.12. 8. 30 volunteers along with one NSS Programme Officer Mr. S. Venkatakrishnakumar participated in the rally as a mark of effects of addiction to alcohol. The rally was flagged off by the district Collector which ended at the VOC Park on 22.3.12. 9. An awareness lecture on Healthy life style was given to 50 volunteers of NSS by Dr. E. Kannan, Assistant Professor, Department of Clinical Nutrition, PSG College of Arts and Science on 29.3.12.

Support from the Alumni Association and its Activities: Alumni Initiatives Entrepreneurial Development Programme The PSG Arts Alumni Association organized a six day Entrepreneurial Development Programme for 26 women beneficiaries below poverty line belonging to the Neelambur Panchayat Level Federation at Middle School, Neelambur from 18.7.11 to 23.7.11 through the Centre for Innovation, Incubation & Entrepreneurship of this institution. Shri NC Nandagopalan, Secretary, PSG College of Arts and Science in his Inaugural Address lauded the activities of the association and motivated the beneficiaries to enjoy the work taken to ease the work and achieve more. Two trainers from CORD, Siruvani gave hands on training to the beneficiaries in the production of sanitary napkins. The programme was graced by Dr Meera Krishna, Project Coordinator of CORD, Siruvani and was sponsored by Canara Bank,

IV Annual General Meeting The PSG Arts Alumni Association organized the IV Annual General Meeting at 5.30 pm on 17.8.11 at PSG College of Arts and Science. President Dr R Nandagopal welcomed the gathering. The Second edition of the Newsletter – Cascallsagain was released by the Managing Trustee Shri L Gopalakrishnan. Parents of the first year students attended the Introductory meeting of their wards and got to know the various activities and programmes of the institution. 2. Parent- Teacher Association supported the Fund Raising Programme through a stage play by Mr SV Sekher (a leading theatre personality and a famous cine actor of the state) organised by the PSG Arts Alumni Association on 19.2.12 and made it a grand success. 32. Health services: (eg. Yoga, Health Camp, Diet Counselling, Screening & etc.,) Yoga Centre The main objective of the yoga centre is to train the learners to have a better physical, psychological and spiritual health. Classes are conducted in the mornings & evenings by outsourcing experts. All the basic requirements are met here. The program is oriented towards integral development of learners. The programme input involves dynamic exercises, compulsory Surya Namaskars, Basic Asanas, Pranayanas, Yogic relaxation, Kriya (cleansing methods) and memory training. It has helped 2100 students to gain good concentration, to overcome cynositis, asthma related complaints and controlling anger. The College has made yoga practice as a compulsory component under part IV of Value Education to infuse a sense of balance, internal harmony and a more positive outlook to life for the students. Diet Clinic The ‘Diet Clinic’ since its inception in 2007 caters to the health needs of the students and staff of various Departments in the campus. The clinic helps to overcome the nutritional problems by assessing the nutritional status, counseling for overweight and under weight, anemia and other deficiency disorders. The clinic provides counseling and guidance to the family members of the faculties. 53 members have benefited as witnessed through a log register of the clinic this year. Gym The College also has a gym to cater to the health needs of the students and provides relaxation. . Free Medical checkup was organized for the 880 aided and 1267 unaided I year under graduate and post graduate students of the College from February 21 to 26, 2012 by Doctors from PSG Institute of Medical Science and Research.

. The Department of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics organized a Bone Health check up on 27.10.11 . Free Bone Health Screening Camp was organised by the Departments of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics and Nutrition & Dietetics at Sangamam Hall on 6.9.2011, in which 200 teaching and non- teaching staff members of PSG College of Arts and Science participated and benefitted. The Camp was organized in association with Global Ortho and Trauma Center, Coimbatore, headed by the expert Dr S Karthik M.B.B.S., D.Ortho., MRCS ( Edin)., the Chief Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon and his medical crew. In the camp clinical nutrition students and staff assessed the body fat percentage, BMR, BMI, type of obesity using Omran’s Body Fat Monitor, along with body circumferences. Before commencing the screening camp, Dr Karthik delivered an informative and mind boggling power point presentation with sensible and colourful pictures. He narrated how one can safeguard the bone health and prevent complications due to the same. Followed his interesting talk, the screening camp was commenced. Bone mass density and blood pressure were assessed for all the participants and simultaneously consultation and counseling were given by the chief and his team free of cost. Nutrition counseling was given regarding weight reduction and to include the dietary sources for improving the bone health. The Physiotherapist from the same center demonstrated the indispensible exercises for various bone related disorders. Surprisingly, except a few, majority of the participants were found to have BMD levels corresponding to either osteopenic or osteoporosis state for which they required intensive dietary, exercise and behavioral modifications. . The Department of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics organized a symposium on “Public Health” on 31.1.12. Morning session was enlightened by Dr.Padmini Balagopal, Clinical Nutritionist, certified Diabetes educator and co – founder MILC Centre, Chennai on “Preventive Health” and motivated our students with her talk on career opportunities in public health nutrition. In the afternoon session Pre Diabetes screening camp was conducted for our College students. Around 150 students attended the camp and were screened for post prandial blood glucose level. A parallel session on demonstration of “Auro Nutrisoft” – Software for Nutrition Research for our students was held. The demonstration was carried out by Mr Santhanakrishnan T, Project Manager & Mrs Jayanthi, Nutritionist & Project co- ordinator, Madurai.

To organize a symposium for the research guides of in - house and other higher educational institution on structural research report and thesis during the month of January 2013. . Sourcing research projects from both National and International funding agencies . The Alumni Association of the institution will be incorporated in giving recognition to the best International publications. 4. Quality Enhancements . A Two day National level workshop will be organized by IQAC on the topic, “Sensitization of recent quality initiatives of NAAC for Higher Education Institutions” in the month of July 2012. . Steps will be taken to strengthen the Small Quality Assurance Circles to ensure quality across the length and breadth of the institution.
