PSG College of Arts & Science Coimbatore The Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) of the IQAC for the year 2011-12 Part A: The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year. i. Objectives designed by IQAC in the beginning of the year: 1. To craft the institution to sign MOUs with Foreign Universities for student and research up gradation 2. To provide free education to deserving students 3. To collaborate with more industries to establish Industry – Academia Partnership with a view to provide better inputs to students and enhance placement portal 4. To connect the students with the Alma matter ii. Outcome achieved: 1. MOU was signed with the Department of Physical Chemistry and Materials Science, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Budapest- 1521, HUNGARY in December, 2011. 2. The Alumni Association was recommended to provide free education to 30 students 3. In the process of collaborating with companies for strengthening placements and faculty with more industry exposure were recruited 4. The outgoing students gladly became a fraction of the Alumni Association Part B: 1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the Institution: i. Goals & Objectives of the Institution: Goals Shall strive to imbibe in the customer . Knowledge . Spirit of Love and . Service Objectives To provide . Value and need based education, . Continual enhancement of intellectual, cultural and social inputs, and 1 . Consistent delivery of quality education through up gradation, commitment and team work. ii. Outcome (key points): . The IQAC suggested formulating inter-disciplinary courses within the existing courses. 2. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution: 1.Students’ Interface Programme A Students’ Interface Programme was organised with the Former President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on 20.2.12 at 10 am at GRD Auditorium, PSG College of Arts & Science. Thiru NC Nandagopalan, Secretary of the College welcomed the gathering and appealed to the students to actively participate in this unique programme. Shri L Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee, PSG & Sons’ Charities presided over the programme and requested the students to unleash the reservations within themselves and gain insights leading to the birth of a vibrant developed India. His Excellency Former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam gave a clarion call to the students to acquire four great qualities of having a big aim, acquiring knowledge, working hard and being determined which will take them a long way towards success. Over 1000 students from various disciplines of the College and from other sister PSG Institutions participated in this programme. Principal Dr R Rajendran thanked the Management and all others for the very cause and success of this programme. 2.Staff Day Celebrations The Staff Day Celebrations of PSG & Sons’ Charities was held on 20.2.12 at GRD Auditorium, PSG College of Arts and Science from 4 pm to 8.30 pm in three phases. Dr JS Bhuvaneswaran, Medical Director, PSG Super Specialty Hospital briefed on the Staff Day Programmes. Shri L Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee, PSG & Sons’ Charities, Mr Vidyaprakash- son of Dr GR Damodharan and Dr AV Varadharajan an alumnus distributed the Silver Jubilee Proficiency Awards to 15 children of the PSG Industrial Institute and PSG NFD Staff Club and to the winners of various sports, cultural and literary events of the Staff Day Celebrations. Dr AV Varadharajan, one of the close associates of Prof GR Damodharan, Former Vice- Chancellor of University of Madras and Architect of PSG Institutions recalled his fond memories with him. Managing Trustee, Shri L Gopalakrishnan, PSG & Sons’ Charities, presided over the function. Dr BK Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore, the Chief Guest of the 2 day, distributed the Service Awards to 12 employees who have completed 25 years of service and mementos to the 8 retired staff. The Chief Guest in his address expressed that by following the foot prints of Prof GR Damodharan one can achieve human excellence. A stage play by Mr SV Sekher ‘Yaam erukka bhayem yeen’ was witnessed by more than 1000 staff of the PSG Institutions and their family members. 3.Free Laptop providing Ceremony The Free Laptop Providing Ceremony under the special scheme instituted by the Hon’ Chief Minister of TamilNadu Dr J Jayalalitha was organised on 22.4.12 at GRD Auditoruim, PSG College of Arts and Science. It was a memorable day for every under graduate student out over here as they were indeed fortunate to possess a laptop each, which is a dream turned reality to them. Hon’ Minister of Agriculture Mr S Dhamodaran distributed the free laptops to 1475 students of the aided and self financing under graduate programmes. Mr M Karunakaran, Collector, Coimbatore District, Mayor of Coimbatore Corporation Mr SM Velusamy and Dr A Santhosham, Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Coimbatore also graced the occasion. 4. XXVI Graduation Day The XXVI Graduation Day of PSG College of Arts and Science was held on 23.4.12 at GRD Auditorium at 2 PM saw 792 Graduates, 302 Post Graduates and 9 PhD Scholars receiving their degrees. Dr Synthia Pandian, Vice-Chairperson, Tamilnadu State Council for Higher Education in her Graduation Day Address lauded PSG College of Arts & Science for equipping graduates with the required skills for their professional and personal life. Congratulating the graduates, she advised them to be aware of future changes, and move with the times, arming themselves with acquiring good citizenship qualities in this knowledge era. Dr H Devaraj, Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Madras was the Guest of Honor. Shri L Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee, PSG Institutions presided over the function and honored 38 rank holders. (22 were graduates and 16 post graduates). Dr R Rajendran, Principal, PSG College of Arts & Science welcomed the gathering and presented the Annual Report. 3. New academic programmes initiated (UG and PG): UG PG Diploma 2011-2012 1) B.com Accounting & Finance 3 2) B.com Retail Marketing ------ ----- 4. Innovations in curricular design and transaction: 1. Compulsory Skill based elective subjects introduced in all UG programmes. 2. To facilitate the students to acquire updated knowledge about current events at National and International levels, ‘General Awareness – online examination’ is made as compulsory component in UG programmes. 3. Application oriented, Advanced & Research based subjects are introduced at PG level. 5. Inter-disciplinary programmes started: IDC EDC UG PG UG PG 2011-12 81 44 24 23 Cluster 28 6. Initiative towards faculty development programme: i. In house training / workshop: 1. Economics Department conducted a Three Day State Level Academic Writing Workshop from 28.5.11 – 30.5.11 2. Nutrition & Dietetics Department conducted a Training Programme on HACCP, Food Safety Management System & ISO 2000:2005 from 12.7.11 – 14.7.11 4 3. Nutrition & Dietetics Department conducted a Two Day “Nutrition Research Methodology- Design and Data Analysis” on 16.9.11 & 17.9.11 4. Economics Department conducted a UGC sponsored State Level workshop on “Changing Contour of World Economy: India’s Tryst With Intellectual Property in the 21st Century” on 2.12.11 5. Psychology Department conducted a UGC sponsored two day workshop on “Specific Learning Disability and Autism” on 7.1.12 & 8.1.12 6. Psychology Department conducted a UGC sponsored two day workshop on “Clinical Hypnosis” on 21.1.12 & 22.1.12 7. Psychology Department conducted a UGC sponsored two day workshop on “Sign Language” on 28.1.12 & 29.1.12 8. Biotechnology Department conducted a PCR Techniques workshop on 17.2.12 & 18.2.12 9. Management Sciences Department conducted a Different Multimedia Software workshop on 7.3.12 from 15.3.12 10. Nutrition Department conducted a Training program on Food Safety Management System, HACCP on 20.3.12 & 21.3.12 11. Microbiology Department conducted a Training program on Molecular Techniques in Microbiology on 27.3.12 & 28.3.12 ii. Out bound programmes: 1.
