| Our 18 Our Mission Views Sleep and stress Tired? You have a right to be. While teenagers often find themselves scolded by teachers for yawning in class or berated by parents for napping at home after a long day at school, the truth is, teenagers need sleep more than anyone else. According to sleepfoundation.org, teenagers require over nine hours of sleep a night in order to be at top performance and functionality during the day. Unfortunately, studies show that only 15 percent of teens receive this amount on average. That makes a whopping 85 percent of teenagers who find themselves unable to reach optimal performance every day whether in school, sports, or other extra-curricular activities, simply because their body is telling them they need to rest. Sleep, as we know, is not easy to come by. There are endless sources of stress for teens and even more sources of stimulation to keep ourselves up at night. We waste hours on Facebook or watching television when we really should be finishing homework. And before you know it, it is past midnight and there are still tasks at hand before you can hit the sack. We at The Viking Views advise students to recognize the Collective bargaining importance of sleep. The band members include freshman lead guitarist PLAVER EMILY Nick Divitto, freshman keyboardist Jacob Voegele, freshman bassist Jimmy Satrape, St. Thomas Aquinas freshman drummer Sean Zedell and sophomore guitarist Jeremy Busto. Busto said that the band likes playing a lot of different genres of music. “Our band likes to play all forms of music, but when it comes to the music we play together [it could be considered] punk,” Busto said. Busto said the fact that the band members are really good friends helps them out a lot as a band. “Our relationship is amazing and we are all really close,” Busto said. “When we aren’t practicing we hang out and do everything together.” Busto said that even though they are easily distracted, they always seem to pull it together. “We are off task 24/7 but we manage to play great,” Busto said. Busto said that being in a band is great because you get to spend time with friends while playing music and his band gets the opportunity to do just that. “My favorite part of being in this band is that I get to play kicking music, hang with my best friends and hope one day change the world with the power of my guitar,” Busto said. NOCA consists of senior ODavid Belden on guitar and vocals, senior Jon McAllister on Guitar, senior Zach Taneyhill on vocals, senior Ian Murphy playing drums and junior Warren Davidson on bass. VIKING VIEWS STOCK PHOTO Murphy said the reason they started the band was to compete in Hoover’s first Battle of the Bands. “We wanted to play in Hoover’s Battle of the Bands, so we got together for that,” Murphy said. “Back then we were called Ding Dong.” Murphy said the band’s three years of experience has helped the band find the style that works for them. “I would say our style is indie/punk/alternative,” Murphy said. Murphy said NOCA does several unique things to stand out from other bands. “We do a lot of freestyle rapping at practice and we usually make up our set list as we are playing the shows, Murphy said. “It’s more fun that way.” Murphy said being a part of NOCA is fun for him because of his love for music. “My favorite part of being in the band is playing music,” Murphy said. “Playing in front of people is great and we have tons of fun when we’re on stage.” the viking views | 03.25.2011 entertainment | 23 the viking views

However, any fan of this rock band with a folk sound would recognize the difference Nin their albums. Their first album consisted of tracks with softer sounds and a great amount of instrumentals. This album, and his band mates became much more dramatic and completely

entertainment changed their sound. Their song, “L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.,” is more mainstream, but the lyrics are

| phenomenal. The line, “some people wear their history like a map on their face,” is very retrospective. 26 Also, their track “Wild Thing,” is very different from their usual songs. The sound of the instruments were annoying; their quiet techno beeps in the background reminded me of Owl City. Another enjoyable track, “Life Is Life,” is the type of song that will put you in a great mood no matter how your day has been. If you are familiar with Noah and the Whale’s music, be prepared for a change if you decide to listen to their newest album. – Ashlea Thomas Avril Lavigne Goodbye Lullaby t may have been awhile since Avril Lagvine’s last album but her new album “Goodbye Lullaby” is, for the most part, worth the wait. With the single “What the Hell” hitting the top of the charts this Inew album has fans excited. Her new album may have her same punk sound but it definitely has some changes. Most of the songs on this album are much slower than her normal punk music. “Remember When”, “Goodbye” and “Not Enough” may be slower songs but the lyrics of these songs are much deeper and emotional than her usual lyrics. But even though some songs on the album may be a tad depressing there are still a few upbeat songs. “I Love You” and “Smile” are more fast paced and not as deep but still enjoyable and catchy. This album is not Avril’s best work so far but it’s still loved by fans and is a big step in her career. Hopefully her next album will take her to the top, just as her other albums have. – Emily Plaver Lupe Fiasco Lasers upe Fiasco’s new album “Lasers” has been released through controversy and drama from the record label, Columbia Records, and Fiasco himself. Protests from Lupe Fiasco fans that picketed Lin front of Columbia’s studio due to a delay in its release were successful, but Fiasco has brought his own personal stir to the controversy; he is quoted in an interview saying he doesn’t like the album, and implied that “Lasers” was a concoction of the record label’s and not an expression of his art. All this negative hype lives up to “Lasers’” quality; it is a boring, uninspired and forgettable album. The quick original lyrics Fiasco is been known for since “Kick, Push” are painfully absent on most tracks. Fiasco’s production is boring, his complex beats and interesting samples are replaced here with cookie-cutter, poppy radio singles. The message on his album is normally one of melancholy heartbreak, acting as someone who tells the bluer version of the game. On “Lasers,” however, instead of a message of love and hip-hop he presents a story of fame and melancholy nothing. – Carter Stanislaw Chip Tha Ripper Gift Raps hip Tha Ripper has released a new mixtape; “Gift Raps” is another attempt to break out and make it like fellow Cleveland native and friend Kid Cudi. To fans in North Eastern Ohio this is just your Ckind of mixtape, all 13 tracks feature only Chip’s slow, meticulous flow. The only change is that Chuck Inglish of “The Cool Kids” produced the entire mixtape. The beats are original and listenable and are a refreshing change that makes Chip’s lyrics sound more mature. Outside of Ohio, however, Chip Tha Ripper’s fans are sparser, who most likely know him from either a feature on a Kid Cudi track or for the Internet meme featuring a ridiculous clip of a Chip freestyle. To these listeners, they will most likely be uninterested; while Chip can try to breakout of his loyal Ohio listeners, this mixtape will most likely not be his big break. It doesn’t feature enough originality to carry him past his homegrown roots and onto the charts. To either listener this will be nothing new, long time fans will rejoice at the creation of even more Chip tracks but skeptics and potential fans wont find anything worth catching their attention or sway their – Carter Stanislaw opinion. It is just another Chip Tha Ripper mixtape and not the breakthrough he wanted, and needed. the viking views | 03.25.2011 entertainment SONY PICTURES/USED WITH PERMISSION The Adjustment Bureau future as well as ruining hers because no one can change their fate.
