Welcome THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Sunday 18 June 2017

Lectio Divina takes place in the Library at 8.45am – an opportunity to reflect on the gospel reading for the day in a quiet and contemplative way.

Sunday School takes place in the Library during the 9.45am Eucharist. For accompanied under-3s there is a Crèche with play mats and toy bags, in the Dean’s Room. Please ask one of the Stewards to guide you to either place. For services in the Nave, hymn books and Books of Common Prayer can be found behind the kneeler on the seat in front of you. In order to accommodate the Joint Services Matins Service there is no Fair Trade Stall this morning.

Following the Cathedral Eucharist, tea coffee and other refreshments are served in the Refectory.

Giving: Regular worshippers are asked to join the Planned Giving Scheme. For more information please ask a Steward. This greatly helps the Cathedral with financial planning. Visitors and UK taxpayers are asked to use the Gift Aid envelope for their offering towards the work and worship of the Cathedral. Please complete the details on the envelope to enable us to claim back the tax as Gift Aid. (Cheques to Cathedral.) It is not necessary for non- taxpayers to use the envelopes.

If you have been worshipping here for a little while, and are beginning to feel at home and would like to know more about playing your part in the life of this community, please get in touch via [email protected]. If you have been a regular at the Cathedral for six months or more, please ensure that your name is added to the Cathedral Community Roll – forms available from the Stewards.

TODAY’S SERVICES 8.00am Holy Communion PRESIDENT The Reverend Neil Vigers READINGS Exodus 19.2-8a; Matthew 9.35-10.8

9.45am Cathedral Eucharist PRESIDENT Canon Julie Gittoes SETTING Missa Brevis in G, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) HYMN 516 (tune ii)

COLLECT O God, the strength of all those who put their trust in you, mercifully accept our prayers and, because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without you, grant us the help of your grace, that in the keeping of your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

FIRST READING Exodus 19.2-8a read by Catherine Perkins

They had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain. Then Moses went up to God; the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, ‘Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites: You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.’

So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. The people all answered as one: ‘Everything that the Lord has spoken we will do.’ Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.

PSALM 100

O be joyful in the Lord, all the earth : serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Know that the Lord is God : it is he that has made us and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Response

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise : give thanks to him and bless his name. For the Lord is gracious; his steadfast love is everlasting : and his faithfulness endures from generation to generation. Response

SECOND READING Romans 5.1-8 read by Tim Clifford-Hill

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.

GOSPEL READING Matthew 9.35-10.8

Choir Alleluia, alleluia. All Alleluia, alleluia.

Choir The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice, says the Lord. I know them and they follow me.

All Alleluia, alleluia.

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.’ Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax-collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: ‘Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, “The kingdom of heaven has come near.” Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

SERMON Canon Mavis Wilson HYMN 308 (tune i)

MOTET Ave verum, Colin Mawby (b. 1936)

Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine, vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine, cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit sanguine; esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. O Jesu dulcis, O pie, O Jesu fili Mariae.

All hail, true body of the blessed Virgin born, which in anguish to redeem us didst suffer upon the cross; from whose side, when pierced by spear there came forth both water and blood: be to us at our last hour the source of consolation. O Jesus loving, O holy, O Jesu Son of Mary. text: 14th C, attr Pope Innocent VI

POST COMMUNION PRAYER Eternal Father, we thank you for nourishing us with these heavenly gifts: may our communion strengthen us in faith, build us up in hope, and make us grow in love; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ANTHEM All wisdom cometh from the Lord, Philip Moore (b. 1943) text from Ecclesiasticus and Psalm 19

All wisdom cometh from the Lord, and is with Him forever. Who can number the sand of the sea and the drops of rain and the days of eternity? Who can find out the height of heav’n, and the breadth of the earth and the deep and wisdom. Wisdom hath been created before all things and the understanding of prudence from everlasting. The word of God most high is the fountain of wisdom, and her ways are everlasting commandments. To whom hath the root of wisdom been revealed? Or who hath known her wise counsels? There is one wise and greatly to be feared, the Lord sitting upon his throne. He created her, and saw her and number’d her, and poured her out upon all his works. She is with all flesh according to his gifts, and he hath given her to them that love him. The fear of the Lord is honour and glory and gladness, and a crown of rejoicing. The fear of the Lord maketh a merry heart and bringeth joy and gladness and a long life. Teach me O Lord the way of thy statutes: and I shall keep it unto the end. Give me understanding and I shall keep thy law; yea I shall keep it with my whole heart. Make me go in the way of thy commandments: for therein is my desire. O stablish thy word in thy servant: that I may fear thee. Behold my delight is in they commandments. O quicken me in thy righteousness. Composed for the 50th anniversary service of Lanesborough School, Guildford in 1980.
