SEJOURNER A PARIS EN FAMILLE FAMILLE ARRIVER A PARIS EN FAMILLE Tous les moyens de transport pour se rendre au cœur de Paris, à partir d'une gare ou d'un aéroport : bus, métro, RER, taxi Paris est desservie par six gares situées en plein centre. De ces points, on peut prendre PARIS le métro ou monter dans l’un des taxis qui stationnent devant chaque gare. Pour les arrivées aux aéroports, plusieurs moyens de transport permettent de rejoindre le centre de la capitale. Orlybus relie l’aéroport d’Orly à la place Denfert-Rochereau, dans le sud de Paris, en 30 minutes environ (tarif : 8 €). Orlyval, un métro spécial, transporte les voyageurs à la gare RER d’Antony, d’où l'on emprunte la ligne B du RER pour se rendre dans le centre (tarif Orly-Paris : 12,05 €/adulte). Le tramway T7 assure en 45 mn la liaison entre l’aéroport d’Orly et la station de métro Villejuif-Louis-Aragon, sur la ligne 7 (tarif : 1,90 €). De l’aéroport Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle (terminal 1), le RER B vous conduit au centre de Paris (Les Halles) en 30 minutes pour 10 €.

    Hannah Benson Benson 1 Finding “The Other Paris” through Creative Cartography Over seven weeks in July and August, I traversed the streets of Paris, distributing over 500 blank maps of the city to booksellers, tourists, businessmen and artists, among others. The goal of this pursuit was to investigate Parisian life according to Parisians. In the American eye, Paris is often seen as the City of Love and Light, and is reduced to monuments like the Eiffel Tower or the Arc de Triomphe. Indeed, when I first visited Paris, I was surprised and slightly disappointed at the reality of the city, which like all other cities, has flaws that are inconsistent with the idealized depiction of tourist destinations. This project sought to discover such inconsistencies, which render Paris a far richer and more nuanced metropolis than even the Louvre and Notre Dame could suggest. Essentially, I embarked on a search for “The Other Paris” by using creative cartography as a means of investigation. I chose to use maps as a way to examine the reality of life in Paris because I believe that they can be a very powerful mode of both personal and cultural expression. Places are not mapped if they are not important or remembered, be they famous museums or nondescript boulangeries where someone goes every morning to get bread for their family. When people fill out a personal map, they are marking the places that are significant in their life, whether or not they intend to. By giving Parisians the opportunity to tell their story on a map, I hoped to unveil such places, which in turn would reveal the true character of Paris according to those who actually live there.

The city offers plenty of inspiring activities – many of which incorporate technology – for kids of all ages. 1. A FAMILY BREAK IN PARIS ARRIVING IN PARIS WITH THE FAMILY All the modes of transport for getting to the centre of Paris, from a train station or airport: by bus, metro, RER or taxi. Paris is served by six train stations, all located in the city centre. From these, you can take a metro or one of the taxis parked in front of every station. If you are arriving by plane, then there are several ways of getting to the city centre. The Orlybus links Orly airport to Place Denfert-Rochereau in the south of Paris, in around 30 minutes (fare: €8.50). Orlyval, a special metro, transports travellers to Antony RER station; from here, WITH THE FAMI RER line B takes travellers on to the city centre (fare Orly-Paris: €12.05/adult). The T7 tramway takes passengers form Orly airport to Villejuif-Louis-Aragan station, on metro Line 7, in 45 minutes (fare: €1.90).     Inaugurations No. 73 PARIS N E W S // SEPTEMBER 2012 There are lots of Inaugurations to keep up with in Paris in September: the Louvre opens its new Islamic Art Department to great fanfare and three hotels reopen after a full makeover. Tour guide specialists have come up with brand new tours: visits to workshops, boutiques, auction houses. And then there is a cashmere boutique and a concept restaurant … Have a good rentrée! Culture // Event at the Louvre: opening of the museum’s 8th department Twenty years after the huge pyramid project, the Louvre today sees the result of a ten-year project, which show- cases the Islamic Arts. Architects Mario Bellini and Rudy Ricciotti have created 2,800 m2 of exhibition area in the Cour Visconti; this architectural masterpiece involved excavating to a depth of 12 metres within the heart of the historic palace of the royal kingdom of France, which dates back to the 12th century. Eight centuries later, a glass roof seems to float above one of the palace’s most ornate courtyards: this ‘dragonfly’s wing’ with its changing reflections of light is a remarkable technical feat of glass panels and metallic glass sheets composed of 2,350 triangles with a gold coloured effect that rest on a structure of eight fine pillars. The interior space is a light and airy exhibition space. Some 3,000 objects are presented to the public in this area specifically designed for them: wall of Ottoman tiles, Egyptian porch, carpets, boxes, carafes, paintings, ceramics, etc. The display of the collections by Renaud Piérard, closely linked to the architecture around it, forms a loop that presents the evolution of these Islamic Arts from the year 632 to 1800, in four large fluid parts.

Les apparences sont en effet d'une simplicité trop belle pour qu'on s'y fie : l'histoire du petit atelier, à quoi se résume-t-elle chez beaucoup, sinon à celle, inversée, de l'usine, concurrente et conquérante, absorbant, dissolvant les structures économiques du passé ? Elle peut être au contraire pour d'autres – surtout fins politiques – celle d'une magnifique résistance à la fureur moderniste, impuissante à remodeler intégralement le paysage économique. Tout n'est pas faux dans ces vues linéaires, mais les pièges sont tendus, les clichés tout prêts à aliéner la réflexion. Afin de se dégager de ces notions présupposées de retard, d'archaïsme ou de survivance, il convient de se demander si, au siècle dernier, la production éclatée, émiettée, ne relevait pas d'une organisation spécifique de la production, ayant en propre son domaine, ses caractéristiques et son histoire. Précisons enfin d'emblée qu'il ne sera parlé que du secteur des biens de consommation destinés au vaste marché des besoins quotidiens.
