Via archival news footage and contemporary eyewitness accounts, the siblings´ true-crime tale lays out the labyrinthine story that unfolded when silent, Rolls-Royce-loving mystic Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and thousands of his maroon-clad, enlightenment-seeking disciples descended on sleepy Antelope, Oregon, in the 1980s. Since the series landed on the streaming service in mid-March, it's become something of a pop culture phenomenon, the latest opportunity for voyeurs to absorb an improbable, shocking, and sprawling true crime tale. (Readers who have yet to make their way fully into obsession, be forewarned: spoilers ahead.) Were the hedonists simply following their religious bliss, or were they part of something more sinister? "You start to see how devotion to one man can be used and manipulated by leadership to have people commit acts that shouldn´t be committed," says Chapman. "That´s a real chilling part of the story: seeing how this love for a person and a community was then used to do harm. -

Production Notes ABOUT THE FILM Timed to the 50th anniversary of NASA’s celebrated Apollo 11 mission, Apollo 11: First Steps Edition is a thrilling cinematic experience that showcases the real-life moments of humankind’s first steps on the Moon. In this special giant screen edition of Todd Douglas Miller’s (Dinosaur 13) critically acclaimed Apollo 11 documentary, the filmmakers reconstruct the exhilarating final moments of preparation, liftoff, landing, and return of this historic mission—one of humanity’s greatest achievements, and the first to put humans on the Moon. It seems impossible, but this project was possible because of the discovery of a trove of never-before-seen 70mm footage and uncatalogued audio recordings—which allowed the filmmakers to create a 47-minute version of the film tailored exclusively for IMAX® and giant screen theaters in science centers and museums. Apollo 11: First Steps Edition is produced by Statement Pictures in partnership with CNN Films. The film is presented by Land Rover, and distributed by MacGillivray Freeman Films. “The Apollo 11 mission was humanity’s greatest adventure and we’re pleased to be bringing this edition to science centers and museums everywhere,” says director Todd Douglas Miller. “This film was designed to take full advantage of the immersive quality of IMAX and giant screen theaters.” But how did it happen? How did this one-in-a-lifetime batch of footage remain undiscovered for fifty years? Miller explains that as his team was working closely with NASA and the National Archives (NARA) to locate all known Apollo 11 footage, NARA staff members simply discovered reels upon reels of 70mm, large-format Apollo footage. -

Journal of Unification Studies Vol. 19, 2018 - Pages 133-172 On April 7, 2018, the New England-Maritimes Regional Group (NEMAAR) of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) held its annual conference at the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. The theme of the conference was technology and religion. In keeping with the theme, I presented a paper titled, “The Technology Empowered Cleric and the End of Religions as we know them.” My presentation focused on one aspect of the impact of technology on religion as humanity moves into the 21st century, the rise of the super-empowered cleric. In this article, I will add five other, sometimes conflicting, characteristics of twenty-first century religions: 1) They are shaped by super-empowered clerics; 2) They are focused on the future; 3) They are transient; 4) They are global; 5) They deify humans; and 6) They are politicized. I will illustrate each of these characteristics with an example of a 21st century religion and its leader. I will conclude by applying these categories to the ministry of Rev. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon. 1. Super-Empowered Clerics Since time immemorial, certain individuals have emerged from the masses, seized power, and ruled as chiefs, kings, dictators, or presidents. These rulers constructed cities, waged wars, amassed wealth, destroyed rivals, and created empires. To legitimize and strengthen their power they established priesthoods, constructed temples, and claimed divine legitimacy. Once the Hebrew kings Saul, David, and Solomon achieved mastery over the twelve unruly and independent tribes of Israel, they conquered Jerusalem, declared it the sole capital of the Jews, destroyed the shrines and outlawed the rituals of the various tribes, transferred the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, and constructed the famed Temple of Jerusalem. -

In many cases labeling something a religion seems uncontroversial. This is the case, for instance, when the social formation so labeled derives from one of the historical worldviews that are commonly called religions. Several so-called religions comprise established mechanisms of internal differentiation, for example, the establishment of sects, schisms, denominations, schools, or cults (in the sense of organized forms of communal worship). In these cases of derivation, the main protagonists tend to be familiar with the former religious traditions, be it as active participants or as being part of the same cultural and social context. On the other hand, there are cases of cross-cultural and cross-religious inspiration; if somebody who has grown up in a country where Buddhism has no established social presence starts to propagate some “Buddhist” ideas and gets others to do the same, the resulting ensemble would probably still be labeled a religion because Buddhism is generally considered such a thing. -

It describes how the followers of Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh bought a ranch outside of rural Antelope, Oregon, in the early 1980s and attempted to build a utopian community. The series hits themes familiar to High Country News readers: a persecuted minority seeking a remote place to practice their beliefs without interference; conservative white locals with little tolerance for outsiders; fabulous wealth (the Bhagwan reportedly had 90 Rolls Royces and wore million- dollar diamond watches) contrasted with wretched poverty (the Rajneesh community bused in thousands of homeless people from cities in an attempt to sway local elections); and, of course, guns and violence. There’s even an environmental angle — Oregon’s first counterattack focused on the community’s violation of progressive land-use regulations designed to protect agricultural lands from development. Cliven Bundy walks out of federal court in Las Vegas with his wife, Carol, and attorney Bret Whipple in January, I couldn’t find anything about this tumultuous after a judge dismissed criminal charges against him and his sons over the 2014 standoff in Bunkerville, Nevada.
