2016 Mathematics Competition Report On the 28th July 2016, 133 students from years 7 to 11 competed in the Australian Mathematics Competition. It is the largest single event on the Australian Education Calender, allowing students to attempt the same tasks, on the same day in about 40 countries. Students were required to answer 30 problems in 75 minutes. This is a non-calculator competition with questions varying in their degree of difficulty and marks. The problems start off easy and get progressively more difficult throughout the paper. Waverley’s overall performance was one of a high standard. We achieved 1 High Distinction, 14 Distinctions, 48 Credits and 54 Proficiencies. Special mention needs to made for Lachlan Muir in Year 7 who achieved a High Distinction. I went on telling the students that I was not about to talk about any of our wins, CAS Premierships (for which there were several) or record scores. There was plenty of time in the assembly already allocated to these celebrations. At the start of the season we asked boys to walk forward as a College and correct a wrong perception that sometimes exists about the way we conduct ourselves on the sporting field. We held a leadership forum for all A’s players from Year 5 right through until Year 12. We spoke about setting an example to other boys in our sports and activities. We talked about the All Blacks where their senior players sweep and clean their change rooms following a match. Super Rugby Referee Andrew Lees addressed the students outlining the importance of respecting each other, the match officials, your coaches and the opposition.

Day is an annual day in September dedicated to reminding people to ask family, friends and colleagues the question, “Are you Okay?” because connecting regularly and meaningfully is one thing everyone can do to make a difference to anyone who might be struggling. Year 10 student Joshua Bale has taken on this R U OK? mantra and created a charitable event to raise awareness of teen depression, anxiety and suicide. Joshua and a group of his friends will be taking part in a “walk and talk” from Maroubra to Bondi on Sunday the 11th of September, proudly wearing R U OK Shirts and raising money as they go. Year 10 students will be involved as supporters on this important day as guides and selling R U OK merchandise. When asking Joshua why he wanted to raise awareness, he said he was struck by the impact of the following statistics, “In 2013, 348 young people aged 14 to 20 years died by suicide – more than any other cause, including road accidents, cancer, and assault. With nearly three times as many young men dying by suicide than young women.” A timely reminder about the impact youth suicide has on Australian society today. There is still time to show your support for this upcoming event, please register using the following website http://ruokwavcol.weebly.com/ and say if you will be attending the “walk and talk.” Don’t forget, asking that question, “Are you ok?” and showing our friends we care is something we can all do. R U OK Day Events

On Thursday 8 September the College marked R U OK? Day with a monster cake stall and selling RUOK? ties. Waverley College has very strong links to this charity through the Larkin family, in particular with Gus Larkin who passed away in 2013 a member of the class of 2016 and his father who was the founder of R U OK Day who has also sadly passed away.

With the help of Gus’s classmates the current Year 12 held fund-raising initiatives to help support this charity and raise awareness for suicide prevention.
