All Saints’ Day Sunday 1 November 2020

10 o’clock CHORAL

The setting for the Gloria, , Benedictus and is Coronation , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–91).

A Day of Thanksgiving

In 2005, an extensive restoration project began to restore this Cathedral to its former glory. The resoration program continued with restoration of the Burt Hall, the Old Deanery and the construction of a new building, the Cadogan Song School. New landscaping and gardens in the Cathedral Precinct followed, and works were completed in October 2017.

The final part of this program of restoration and building was installing an air temperature control system for the Cathedral. Architect, Kevin Palassis prepared the scope of works, Colgan Industries was awarded the contract and Beck Advisory were project managers. Today we give thanks for their skill and commitment on the completion of this project. It brings to an end more than 15 years of building works. We also give thanks for the generosity of Mrs Patricia Pidgeon, whose beqest made installing the air-cnditioning possible She was a worshipper and member of Chapter and directed her bequest to the comfort of worshippers. She have been fully aware of the heat and cold that afflicts the Cathedral during the high points of summer and the depths of winter.

We welcome the Very Reverend Dr John Shepherd AM, Dean Emeritus, as our preacher, who, with the Cathedral Chapter, initiated this project.

Earlier this year, the pandemic prevented us celebrating in our usual manner. So today we celebrate All Saints’ Day with extra joy and thanksgiving. We give thanks that we have not had community transmission of the COVID- 19 virus in Western Australia for some months. As we give thanks for the heroes of faith who down that ages witnessed to the risen Christ, this All Saints’ Day we give thanks and pray for modern day heroes, the medical staff, emergency workers and medical researchers who have risked their lives for the sake of others.

GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME Entrance hymn

or all the saints who from their labours rest, F who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesu, be for ever blest. .

Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; thou, in the darkness, still their one true light. Alleluia.

O blest , fellowship divine! we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia.

But lo, there breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array: the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia.

From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost Alleluia. TEXT: William Walsham How (1823–97); MUSIC: ‘Sine Nomine’, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958).

Greeting & prayer of preparation Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever.

Ngaala kaaditj Noongar moort keyen kaadak nidja boodja. We acknowledge the Noongar people as the original custodians of this land.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Over two decades, we have laboured to retore and improve the fabric of this Cathedral. With the completion of the air-conditioning, today marks an end of a long journey. Today we thank God for what has been achieved, for the gift of resources, both in human skills and generous giving, and for the safe keeping of the builders as they worked.

As we remember our labour on this building, we remember too those who lived before us, those who laboured for the Kingdom of God, who bore the heat of the day, and built up the people of God, since the time of Christ. On this Feast of All Saints, we rejoice in the fellowship of all God’s saints. Let us now hear God’s call to live holy lives in the power of the Spirit.

Let us pray.

lmighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from Awhom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.

Let us then run our race, laying aside every weight and bringing our sins to the Lord in penitence and faith.

erciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in M thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart, we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

lmighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith, Apardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 4

Collect for All Saints’ Let us pray.

We pray in silence.

E PRAISE YOU, HEAVENLY FATHER, that you have knit together chosen ones in one communion and fellowship in the body of your W Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Old Testament A reading from the Book of Revelation.

fter this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, Afrom every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?” I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Revelation 7·9–17 Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm will alway give thanks unto the Lord : I his praise shall ever be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord : the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O praise the Lord with me : and let us magnify his Name together. I sought the Lord, and he heard me : yea, he delivered me out of all my fear.

Lo, the poor crieth, and the Lord heareth him : yea, and saveth him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord tarrieth round about them that fear him : and delivereth them. O taste, and see, how gracious the Lord is : blessed is the man that trusteth in him. O fear the Lord, ye that are his saints : for they that fear him lack nothing. TEXT: Psalm 34·1–4, 6–9, Benedicam Domino; MUSIC: double Anglican chant in C Major, Martin Luther (1483–1546).

Epistle A reading from the First Letter of John.

ee what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of SGod; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. 1 John 3·1–3 Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel

HEN JESUS SAW THE CROWDS, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and W taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the 8 kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5·1–12

Sermon Given by the Very Reverend Dr John Shepherd AM, Dean Emeritus.

Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

E BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

W We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the people United in the company of all the faithful and looking for the coming of the kingdom, let us offer our prayers to God, the source of all life and holiness.

Merciful Lord, strengthen all Christian people by your Holy Spirit, that we may live as a royal priesthood and a holy nation to the praise of Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Bless Kay, our Archbishop, Geoffrey, our Primate, and all ministers of your Church, that by faithful proclamation of your word we may be built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets into a holy temple in the Lord.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

With thanksgiving for this Cathedral building, for the work completed, and the restoration complete, for Kevin, the Architect, Hamish, our Project Manager and his team Tim and Steve, for our builders, Daniel, Nathan, James, Martin, John Chris, Zac, Anthony, Patrick, Jonathan, and Lewis, for the mechanical engineers and mechanical installers, Karl and Jon for our electricians, Daniel and Shane, for their skill and dedication. Prosper the work of our hands, and may all who seek your help in this place, find your grace and love.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We pray for a world beset by pandemic; for those places where infections are increasing; for those places where medical resources are scarce; for those who are separated from family and dear friends; for tired medical professionals, working for the good of others. Give to the world and its peoples

10 the peace that comes from above, that they may find Christ’s way of freedom and life.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We pray for those in need, especially those who have asked for our prayers: Angela, Chuan, Ben, Ken, Dion, Tracey and Toni. Touch and heal all those whose lives are scarred by sin or disfigured by pain, that, raised from death to life in Christ, their sorrow may be turned to eternal joy.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Remember in your mercy all those gone before us who have been well-pleasing to you from eternity: Pieter Cruse and Paige Desaunios, recently departed; Edna Worley, Hilda Pearce, Bruce Pengelley, Charmaine Dragun, Chris Amor, Karen Atkins, whose years mind occurs this week; Patricia Pidgeon and her generous gift. Preserve in your faith your servants on earth, guide us to your kingdom and grant us your peace at all times.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We give you thanks for the whole company of your saints in glory, with whom in fellowship we join our prayers and praises; by your grace may we, like them, be made perfect in your love.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

LL GLORY AND HONOUR be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. AWe give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. And now we give you thanks because you have called us into the fellowship of all your saints, and set before us the example of their witness and the fruit of your Spirit in their lives. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

Sanctus & Benedictus anctus, sanctus, sanctus Holy, holy, holy SDominus Deus Sabaoth; Lord God of Hosts; pleni sunt cœli et terra gloria tua: heaven and earth are full of your glory: in excelsis. hosanna in the highest.

enedictus qui venit Blessed is he who comes B in nomine Domini: in the name of the Lord: hosanna in excelsis. hosanna in the highest.

Coronation Mass, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–91)

13

ERCIFUL GOD, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and Mwine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ After supper, he took the cup, and again giving thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Let us proclaim .

Christ Church Mass, Philip Matthias (b. 1954)

enew us by your Holy Spirit unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us R with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise:

Christ Church Mass, Philip Matthias (b. 1954)

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

We who are many are one body For we all share in the one bread.

Hymn of thanksgiving

ejoice in God’s saints, today and all days! R A world without saints forgets how to praise. Their faith in acquiring the habit of prayer, their depth of adoring, Lord, help us to share.

Rejoice in those saints, unpraised and unknown, who bear someone’s cross or shoulder their own: they shame our complaining, our comforts, our cares: what patience in caring, what courage, is theirs!

Rejoice in God’s saints, today and all days! A world without saints forgets how to praise. In loving, in living, they prove it is true: the way of self-giving, Lord, leads us to you.
