How we aligned to P5! Joe Lykken 48th Annual Fermilab Users Meeting 10 June 2015 Two years ago: U.S. HEP community comes together!
• Successful Snowmass community process • Clarifies the particle physics landscape • Inspired by recent discoveries: Higgs, neutrinos, dark energy
2 Joe Lykken | 48th Annual Fermilab Users Meeting! 6/10/15 12 months ago: the P5 plan!
• A strategic plan for U.S. particle physics maximizing opportunities for breakthrough science • Explicit prioritization, hard choices made within realistic budget scenarios • Particle physics community unified behind the plan: 2,331 signatures on letter sent to Secretary Moniz
3 Joe Lykken | 48th Annual Fermilab Users Meeting! 6/10/15 P5 plan in a nutshell!
• Continue U.S. commitment and leading roles in the LHC • Build a neutrino program at Fermilab that will attract the world community • Continue U.S. leading efforts in dark matter, dark energy, and cosmic microwave background • Pursue the Fermilab-based muon program • Invest in the accelerator and detector technologies that we will need in the future
It is a feature of this plan that the major components reinforce each other
4 Joe Lykken | 48th Annual Fermilab Users Meeting! 6/10/15 Strong support for P5 plan in DOE, Congress!
5 Joe Lykken | 48th Annual Fermilab Users Meeting! 6/10/15 Overarching Fermilab science strategy: diverse with flagship!
• A world class laboratory with the resources on the scale of Fermilab or CERN should have a diverse particle physics program and a flagship project…with the closing of the Tevatron Fermilab lost its flagship…however strong diverse program emerging – LHC, cosmic, muons, SBL & LBL neutrinos, accelerator science
• No flagship project “started,” but progress rapid and focused on a FY17 construction start for DUNE/LBNF – Increase users by ~1,000 – Drives upgrade of accelerator complex…incrementally – Success will enhance significantly our “global” reputation
6 Joe Lykken | 48th Annual Fermilab Users Meeting! 6/10/15 P5 hard choices and redirection! • Muon program • Project X • LBNE -> recast as LBNF with new international collaboration DUNE • PIP-II • LHC and LHC upgrades • ORKA • Generation 2 & 3 dark matter experiments • LSST • DESI • Muon collider
