The most prestigious award for a life changing organization

Imagine you are a millionaire and your days are coming to an end, what would you state on your will? Who would inherit all your assets and wealth? Your offspring, right? But what if you don’t have any? More than 100 years ago this was the dilemma faced by a wealthy Swedish man. He was a chemist, engineer, industrialist and inventor. His name, Alfred Bernhard Nobel.

It is thanks to Mr. Nobel (and his will), that since 1901 one of the most prestigious prizes was created, ‘The Nobel Prize’. The Nobel Prize is not one but five separate prizes that, according to Mr. Nobel's will, are awarded “to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind”. Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace.

Although all Nobel prizes are hugely important and recognized, the most awaited each year is the “Nobel Peace Prize”. With nominees such as Donald Trump, Greta Thunberg, Loujain al-Hathloul or The Black Lives Matter Movement, the world community was anxious to learn who was going to be the 101st Nobel Peace Prize Winner. Unexpectedly for many, the ‘World Food Programme’ (WFP) of the United Nations was this year’s winner for its efforts to combat hunger and improve conditions for peace.

The WFP delivers food assistance to more than 80 countries around the world, providing assistance to over 100 million people who suffer from acute food insecurity and hunger. The organization has been committed to fend off famine in hunger hotspots such as Yemen, South Sudan or the Democratic Republic of Congo. Bearing witness to how hunger and conflict feed each other, and how food could be a tool for achieving peace.
