Ordinary Heroes: Depictions of Masculinity in World War II Film A thesis submitted to the Miami University Honors Program in partial fulfillment of the requirements for University Honors with Distinction by Robert M. Dunlap May 2007 Oxford, Ohio Abstract Much work has been done investigating the historical accuracy of World War II film, but no work has been done using these films to explore social values. From a mixed film studies and historical perspective, this essay investigates movie images of American soldiers in the European Theater of Operations to analyze changing perceptions of masculinity. An examination of ten films chronologically shows a distinct change from the post-war period to the present in the depiction of American soldiers. Masculinity undergoes a marked change from the film Battleground (1949) to Band of Brothers (2001). These changes coincide with monumental shifts in American culture. Events such as the loss of the Vietnam War dramatically changed perceptions of the Second World War and the men who fought during that time period. The United States had to deal with a loss of masculinity that came with their defeat in Vietnam and that shift is reflected in these films. The soldiers depicted become more skeptical of their leadership and become more uncertain of themselves while simultaneously appearing more emotional. Over time, realistic images became acceptable and, in fact, celebrated as truthful while no less masculine. In more recent years, there is a return to the heroism of the World War II generation, with an added emotionality and dimensionality. Films reveal not only the popular opinions of the men who fought and reflect on the validity of the war, but also show contemporary views of masculinity and warfare.

The Rhine River Crossings by Barry W. Fowle Each of the Allied army groups had made plans for the Rhine crossings. The emphasis of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) planning was in the north where the Canadians and British of Field Marshal Bernard L. Montgomery's 21st Army Group were to be the first across, followed by the Ninth United States Army, also under Montgomery. Not many people know this, but I’ve always considered myself an artist of sorts. Ever since I was a young kid, I invariably find myself passing the time by doodling, drawing, and, on occasion, even painting. In the space between my paper and pencil, and in those moments when inspiration would strike, my imagination would run amok and these bigger-than-life personas - football players and comic book characters and, of course, professional wrestlers - would come to life. I wasn’t aware of this until much later, but for all those years my mother would quietly steal away my drawings, saving them for all prosperity, and perhaps giving her a way to relive all of those memories of me as a child. That’s exactly what happened to me when she showed me those old sketches of Iron Man and Walter Payton and Fred Flintstone and Hulk Hogan. I found myself instantly transported back to a time where things were simpler and characters were real and the art was pure. I get a lot of really similar feelings when I look at the incredible art that Rob Schamberger has shared with 2 foreward us all. Rob’s passion for art and for professional wrestling struck me immediately as someone that has equally grown to love and appreciate both, and by Adam Pearce truth be told I am extremely jealous of his talents.

Travers Scott, Committee Chair Dr. Erin Ash Dr. Darren Linvill ABSTRACT For a long time, professional wrestling has existed on the outskirts of society, with the idea that it was just for college-aged men. With the rise of the popularity of the World Wrestling Entertainment promotion, professional wrestling entered the mainstream. Celebrities often appear at wrestling shows, and the WWE often hires mainstream musical artists to perform at their biggest shows, WrestleMania and Summer Slam. Despite this still-growing popularity, there still exists a gap between men’s wrestling and women’s wrestling. Often the women aren’t allowed long match times, and for the longest time sometimes weren’t even on the main shows.

  • Family Channel Takes a Stand Against Bullying
Family Channel Takes a Stand Against Bullying Family Channel Partners with Bullying.org to Launch National Bullying Awareness Week November 15 to 21, 2004 Toronto, November 8, 2004 - Family Channel and Bullying.org Canada are launching the second- annual, national bullying awareness week on November 15, 2004. Running until November 21, the week-long campaign is intended to build awareness for the part that bystanders play in diffusing and preventing social/relational bullying situations. The campaign hinges on a challenge to young people to “Take the Pledge,” an empowering statement that encourages kids to take a stand against bullying. Last year 55,000 Canadian kids took the pledge and the goal is to increase this number to 100,000 during this year’s campaign. This year’s campaign will include a week of special programming on Family Channel; the launch of a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) demonstrating the part that bystanders can play in remedying bullying; and, an interactive website where Canadians can “Take the Pledge” and tell their stories of standing up to bullying. Schools across Canada will also hold events and organize initiatives during this week, and throughout the school year, to stop bullying and draw awareness to the part that bystanders can play. "Social bullying is reinforced when kids who witness the act stand by and do nothing about it," says Bill Belsey, President, Bullying.org Canada. "Family Channel and Bullying.org are trying to change ‘bystander’ behaviour by showing kids examples of how they can act differently and diffuse bullying situations. We are not asking kids to get involved in a physical way, but rather to reach out to victim and show bullies that their actions will not be sanctioned or tolerated.
