  • Elmore Leonard, 1925-2013
ELMORE LEONARD, 1925-2013 Elmore Leonard was born October 11, 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Due to his father’s position working for General Motors, Leonard’s family moved numerous times during his childhood, before finally settling in Detroit, MI in 1934. Leonard went on to graduate high school in Detroit in 1943, and joined the Navy, serving in the legendary Seabees military construction unit in the Pacific theater of operations before returning home in 1946. Leonard then attended the University of Detroit, majoring in English and Philosophy. Plans to assist his father in running an auto dealership fell through on his father’s early death, and after graduating, Leonard took a job writing for an ad agency. He married (for the first of three times) in 1949. While working his day job in the advertising world, Leonard wrote constantly, submitting mainly western stories to the pulp and/or mens’ magazines, where he was establishing himself with a strong reputation. His stories also occasionally caught the eye of the entertainment industry and were often optioned for films or television adaptation. In 1961, Leonard attempted to concentrate on writing full-time, with only occasional free- lance ad work. With the western market drying up, Leonard broke into the mainstream suspense field with his first non-western novel, The Big Bounce in 1969. From that point on, his publishing success continued to increase – with both critical and fan response to his works helping his novels to appear on bestseller lists. His 1983 novel La Brava won the Edgar Award for best mystery novel of the year.

The first performance was the Ragtime Revue, where students heard Ragtime and unusual instruments, like the Theramin, washboard, and musical saw. After the performance, students had the opportunity to play the shamisen, mandolin, and a three-manual organ. Other performances were the Forte String Quartet, with a 16-year- old guest violinist from Maine; the Western Winds, a cappella vocal ensemble from New York City; and the Mindanao Kulintang Ensemble from the Southern Philippines. Founder and Creative Director, Masanobu Ikemiya, has brought a variety of music from around the world to the State of Maine through the Arcady performances. Mindanao Kulintang Ensemble On Tuesday, August 26th, Director Ikemiya visited Mountain View to speak and perform for students at the facility. Nominated for a Grammy Award in 1994, he often performs with the New York Philharmonic and Japan Philharmonic Orchestras, and is the director of the New York Ragtime Orchestra. Students were amazed by his talent, and pleased that a world-class musician would spend the time to visit and perform for them, and allow them to perform for him. • Contemporary Conservative Constructions of American Exceptionalism
Journal of Contemporary Rhetoric, Vol. 1, No.2, 2011, pp. 40-54. Contemporary Conservative Constructions of American Exceptionalism Jason A. Edwards Ever since President Obama took office in 2009, there has been an underlying debate amongst politicians, pundits, and policymakers over America’s exceptionalist nature. American exceptionalism is one of the foundational myths of U.S. identity. While analyses of Barack Obama’s views on American exceptionalism are quite prominent, there has been little discussion of conservative rhetorical constructions of this impor- tant myth. In this essay, I seek to fill this gap by mapping prominent American conservatives’ rhetorical voice on American exceptionalism. Keywords: American exceptionalism, conservative rhetoric, jeremiad In April 2009, President Obama travelled to Europe to meet with European leaders in coordinating a strategy to deal with the global financial crisis and to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the NATO alliance. At a news conference in Strasbourg, France, Ed Luce of the Financial Times asked the president whether or not he believed in American ex- ceptionalism. Obama answered by stating, I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British ex- ceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism. I am enormously proud of my country and its role and history in the world . we have a core set of values that are en- shrined in our Constitution, in our body of law, in our democratic practices, in our belief in free speech and equality that, though imperfect, are exceptional. Now, the fact that I am very proud of my country and I think that we‟ve got a whole lot to offer the world does not lessen my interest in recognizing the value and wonderful qualities of other countries or recogniz- ing that we‟re not always going to be right, or that people may have good ideas, or that in order for us to work collectively, all parties, have to compromise, and that includes us.

Novelist Neal Stephenson Once Again Proves He's the King of t... http://www.wired.com/print/culture/art/magazine/16-09/mf_ste... << Back to Article WIRED MAGAZINE: 16.09 Novelist Neal Stephenson Once Again Proves He's the King of the Worlds By Steven Levy 08.18.08 Illustration: Nate Van Dyke Tonight's subject at the History Book Club: the Vikings. This is primo stuff for the men who gather once a month in Seattle to gab about some long-gone era or icon, from early Romans to Frederick the Great. You really can't beat tales of merciless Scandinavian pirate forays and bloody ninth-century clashes. To complement the evening's topic, one clubber is bringing mead. The dinner, of course, is meat cooked over fire. "Damp will be the weather, yet hot the pyre in my backyard," read the email invite, written by host Njall Mildew-Beard. That's Neal Stephenson, best-selling novelist, cult science fictionist, and literary channeler of the hacker mindset. For Stephenson, whose books mash up past, present, and future—and whose hotly awaited new work imagines an entire planet, with 7,000 years of its own history—the HBC is a way to mix background reading and socializing. "Neal was already doing the research," says computer graphics pioneer Alvy Ray Smith, who used to host the club until he moved from a house to a less convenient downtown apartment. "So why not read the books and talk about them, too?" With his shaved head and (mildewless) beard, Stephenson could cut something of an imposing figure.

  • Bob Dylan Performs “It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding),” 1964–2009
Volume 19, Number 4, December 2013 Copyright © 2013 Society for Music Theory A Foreign Sound to Your Ear: Bob Dylan Performs “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding),” 1964–2009 * Steven Rings NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.13.19.4/mto.13.19.4.rings.php KEYWORDS: Bob Dylan, performance, analysis, genre, improvisation, voice, schema, code ABSTRACT: This article presents a “longitudinal” study of Bob Dylan’s performances of the song “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” over a 45-year period, from 1964 until 2009. The song makes for a vivid case study in Dylanesque reinvention: over nearly 800 performances, Dylan has played it solo and with a band (acoustic and electric); in five different keys; in diverse meters and tempos; and in arrangements that index a dizzying array of genres (folk, blues, country, rockabilly, soul, arena rock, etc.). This is to say nothing of the countless performative inflections in each evening’s rendering, especially in Dylan’s singing, which varies widely as regards phrasing, rhythm, pitch, articulation, and timbre. How can music theorists engage analytically with such a moving target, and what insights into Dylan’s music and its meanings might such a study reveal? The present article proposes one set of answers to these questions. First, by deploying a range of analytical techniques—from spectrographic analysis to schema theory—it demonstrates that the analytical challenges raised by Dylan’s performances are not as insurmountable as they might at first appear, especially when approached with a strategic and flexible methodological pluralism.

Book Three of the Author's Baroque CycleBy Steven M. AnthonyOdalisque is Book Three of Volume I (Quicksilver) of the author’s Baroque Cycle. Book One introduced Daniel Waterhouse, a 17th century member of the English Royal Society. Both the college years and twilight years of Waterhouse’s life are covered in separate threads. Book Two follows the exploits of Half-Cocked Jack Shaftoe and his traveling companion Eliza, whom he liberated from the Turks at the Siege of Vienna.Book Three merges the characters of Books One and Two during the historical period covering the reigns of Charles II, James II, Louis XIV and William of Orange. This equates to the middle age of Daniel Waterhouse, a Puritan who is navigating the perilous religious landscape between the Protestant King Charles II and the Catholic King James II. Meanwhile Eliza shuttles between the Versailles court of Louis XIV and the Dutch Republic, acting as both financial manipulator and covert operative. Various other historical figures make their appearances throughout the pages. If you enjoyed Books One and Two, then this is more of the same.

Nelson Semantic Faculties: Factions within the mathic world, in the years following the Reconstitution, generally claiming descent from Halikaarn. So named because they believed that symbols could bear actual semantic content. The idea is traceable to Protas and to Hylea before him. Compare Syntactic Faculties. (THE DICTIONARY, 4th edition, A. R. 3000)1 In his 2002 tour de force essay on the Hispanic baroque Barroco, Fernando R. de la Flor introduces Juan de Borja’s emblem, Hominem te esse cogita (think that you are [only] a man), as evidence of a Hispanic counter-proposal to the Cartesian revolution, signaled by Descartes’s emblematic motto Cogito ergo sum (Fig. 1). The Spanish scholar’s lengthy dissertation on Spain’s contesta- tory relationship with European modernity deploys Borja’s emblem as a pro- lepsis for his hypothesis concerning a specifically Hispanic strategy for negoti- ating the modern marriage of (proto-)capitalism and political absolutism. The essay goes to great lengths to excavate what the author identifies as the subver- sive nihilism at the heart of Counter-Reformation efforts to close off the Span- ish empire from the progressive and instrumentalist thrust behind Descartes’s attempt to define and legitimize the individual subject’s encounter with, and analysis of, the real physical causes of the universe. R. de la Flor’s argument is dialectically anchored in his rejection of José Antonio Maravall’s more instrumentalist (Cartesian) definition of the Spanish baroque: “I believe that the peculiarity of this hispanic baroque culture resides, precisely, in what Maravall denies from the beginning: that is, in the manifest capacity of its expressive system to move in the opposite direction to any es- tablished ends” (Barroco 19).

Speaking from the Heart: Mediation and Sincerity in U.S. Political Speech David Supp-Montgomerie A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Communication Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences. Chapel Hill 2013 Approved by: Christian Lundberg V. William Balthrop Carole Blair Lawrence Grossberg William Keith © 2013 David Supp-Montgomerie ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT David Supp-Montgomerie: Speaking from the Heart: Mediation and Sincerity in U.S. Political Speech (Under the direction of Christian Lundberg) This dissertation is a critique of the idea that the artifice of public speech is a problem to be solved. This idea is shown to entail the privilege attributed to purportedly direct or unmediated speech in U.S. public culture. I propose that we attend to the ēthos producing effects of rhetorical concealment by asserting that all public speech is constituted through rhetorical artifice. Wherever an alternative to rhetoric is offered, one finds a rhetoric of non-rhetoric at work. A primary strategy in such rhetoric is the performance of sincerity. In this dissertation, I analyze the function of sincerity in contexts of public deliberation. I seek to show how claims to sincerity are strategic, demonstrate how claims that a speaker employs artifice have been employed to imply a lack of sincerity, and disabuse communication, rhetoric, and deliberative theory of the notion that sincere expression occurs without technology. In Chapter Two I begin with the original problem of artifice for rhetoric in classical Athens in the writings of Plato and Isocrates.
