He came from the Hahndorf club in South Australia and quickly established himself as a leader both on and off the field. I He was club captain in 1994 which was a very difficult year for t~e club as we failed to win a game. He worked very hard to keep the club believing in itself and to keep the "Vision" In 1998 he coached Reserve Grade to the grand final for only the third time in the club's history.

He was a member of the 1998 first grade premiership team. I Congratulations Stuart!

This is our challenge as we enter the new millenium, to think bigger, better and more professionally than the competition both on and off the field. We have become successful and are recognized as such, but in our game, there is a very fine line that separates first from last.

Our club is no longer just a sporting club. We must recognise that we are part of a business and that we face challenges that other businesses face. Being in sport, I feel that our challenges are somewhat larger because our business is ironically, still so very new and it seems that everyone who has an interest in sport seems to have an • op1mon.

Some of our accomplishments this year: The appointment of a full- time General Manager. Both Seniors and Reserves reaching the finals in consecutive years and the seniors reaching the Grand Final in three consecutive seasons. This success is unparalleled in our history.

A special mention must go to our Third Grade team for the competitive spirit which they continue to display. To the coaching personnel: Gerard, Stuart, Shane, Matthew and Ashley, congratulations and thank you for your tireless efforts.

Chris Luscombe and Simon Kelly in their 1997 and 1998 reports explained the importance of a committee. To be successful, a committee must work hard to maintain that success. Our challenge is to work smarter.

Our club could not survive without the support of volunteers. I cannot express my thanks enough to all who have contributed. To Chris Luscombe, our illustrious President in his final year, no words can express my appreciation for your contribution. I only wish that we could have worked this closely at the beginning of your term and not the end. To Marg, thank you for supporting Chris. You should be proud of what he has helped the club to achieve.

To our latest Junior Club, Drummoyne Power, congratulations on your achievements in your first season. A Premiership and Runners-up are worthy achievements . To Glebe, congratulations on your 20 year anniversary. Your success is reflected in the eleven players who achieved representative honours, especially John Feain (NSW U/16 representative) and James Kirby (Sydney representative). It is our challenge to build relationships that will secure our futures.

Finally to my wife Veronica, the football widow, Football and sport are my future. Thank you for being so supportive and understanding.

"Proud of our history and confident of our future".

This is so true of the Balmain Football Club. But only with your support.

Andrew Hamilton General Manager REPORT OF THE FIRST GRADE COACH 1999

The end to the 1999 season was nothing short of disappointing. Losing to Campbelltown in the manner we did opens a sore for players, coaches & supporters which will take a long time to heal. Close enough is good enough for losers.

Campbelltown are a strong club whose performances on & off the field display innovation, ambition, direction and strength. They provide a yardstick for the competition which is not only worth emulating but worth beating.

Balmain in real terms "won" or played footy to it's potential for a total of one of the last six quarters of the season - clubs cannot expect to win premierships on the back of that statistic. • Nevertheless there were some positives for the club to build on from our season 1999. The comeback against Pennant Hills in the Preliminary Final. The stirring victories over arch rivals North Shore in the second last round and in the first semi-final. The consistent form ofnew boys to the club: David Dunn, Mark Mackenzie, Geoff Bouchier; the slashing victory to Mick Carey in the Best & Fairest; the outstanding form of Ashley Thompson and Nick Murray in the finals; the potential realized by Ryan Meldrwn in the Grand Final and ironically the strong victories against the odds versus Campbelltown out there in rounds 1 and 9.

But FOOTY is like that - it grabs you by the hair and rubs your face in the shit when you least expect it - and likewise it can propel you to unrestrained ecstasy when you think your time is up.

On a personal note I would like to publicly acknowledge the tremendous assistance given by Paul Feain, not only to me but to the Balmain Football Club. A more selfless individual I have not seen involved in football before. Thank you Paul. And to Simon Kelly, thank you for your support - your advise and your tremendous commitment to the cause. I appreciate it.

Also thanks to Matt Feain, Brendan Murray, Justin Groves, Andrew Hamilton, Chris Luscombe, Annette and Adrian Ferris, James Sutherland, Sasha Grinham, Narelle Cox and Frank Hume for their assistance throughout the year.. And finally to Stuart Turner, Shane Nicholls and David Bugg who provided me with their commitment, friendship, advice and humour when it was needed most.

! I REPORT FROM THE RESERVE GRADE COACH 1999

" ...... Kyprianou from the back pocket, changes direction of the play as he passes to Womble who dashes up the wing - he kicks long looking for Hutch, Hutch marks and handballs to Vozella. Vozella kicks to the top of the square and big Andy takes a grab, ten metres out directly in front. He is taking his time, he looks across to Kypa who is screaming for the ball but ignores him. The siren has gone, Balmain are a point down - this kick will win the Reserves Grand Final if he kicks it, he shoots ...... it's a GOAL!! Balmain win ...... "

That is a rough description of the dream I had the night before the reserves final against Pennant Hill's - unfortunately it didn't tum out that way.

Nevertheless, we have reason to be satisfied with what we achieved this year. Most notably we were able to provide the First grade team with players who acquitted themselves extremely well. This year we have had many first year players at the club and in a few cases some players who were playing their first year of football. I believe we were capable of a lot more than we achieved on the scoreboard this year and I believe that we were only restricted by our lack of training effort. I am a firm believer in enjoying your football and I think for the majority of the year we did just that.

Thank you to all the people who helped in some way throughout the year. With special mention to the medical staff ,water carriers (including Bruce Arndell) and the various runners, your efforts are very much appreciated. To Paul Feain, Andrew Hamilton and Chris Luscombe thank you for your help and guidance. Thank you also to Shane Nicholls who was a great help to me throughout the season. To Z.ed thank you for not only giving me the opportunity to be involved in such a fantastic club but for also being a great mate. Finally to John Meldrum who was at more training sessions that most of the players this year, thank you for you're tireless effort throughout the year, I really ,do appreciate it.

It has been a real pleasure to be involved with a great group of people this year and I thank you all for your support and friendship.

It would be easy to reflect upon season 1999 as being one of little on-field success as is traditionally measured in football. Looking at our win loss-ratio for the year, I could forgive suggestions that Ashley and myself hang up the magnet board (or hurl it in frustration) and be banished from the coaching caper stamped 'never to return!' Nevertheless, I would like to suggest that the Balmain under 18's achieved far more than can be measured by statistics including win/loss ration or points for and against.

Prior to our first match for the year it looked unlikely that we would field a full team oflegitimate under 18's for that game let alone the whole season. However, thanks to the hard work behind the scenes of team manager Gary Bennell and Paul Feain, enough willing participants were assembled to represent the third grade tigers. •

In the early stages of season '99 the Balmain U/18's were only a group of players, many of whom had never before played Australian Rules football. It took some time for that group to become a team. To see the guys mould into a team and develop club spirit and friendships was incredibly satisfying and a pleasure to be involved with. Moreover, the tremendous improvement shown by several of the players throughout the year was fantastic to witness and gave me hope for the future of the club. Certainly there were 'hiccups' during season '99, and at times the team played more like kittens than Tigers, however the guys stuck together and represented the club with pride, something that made me proud as a coach.

Overall I can only look back on the season in a positive light, having seen the players develop as a team, improve as the season progressed, meet new friends and most importantly have a bloody good time along the way!

Before signing off, Ashley and myself would like to thank all the people who supported the U/18's this year including team manager Gary Bennell, Paul Feain, the medical staff; Frank and Narrelle, and our bus driver Brian Coles who against the odds managed to get us to our away games safely. We would also like to encourage the under 18's of 1999 to continue to be a part of the Balmain Australian Football Club and wish them all the best as we surge into the next millenium: Go the Tigers!!

• The Balmain Australian Rules Football club has had a troubled career. Without doubt we have been one of Australia's most unsuccessful football clubs. The club was formed in 1903 and for 7 years played in the first division of Sydney football. The club made the finals for the first 4 years, with a best result of runners up in 1904. The Reserve grade team were premiers that year. By 1909 we were unable to field a full team every week and for the years 1910, 11 & 12 we were in the Reserve grade competition only and played in 3 grand finals for one premiership. In 1913, we combined with a team called Northern Districts who were based at Ryde, and once again played in the first division under the name of Central Western. In 1915 the name changed back to Balmain and for 2 years we were one of the leading clubs. In 1916 we lost one game throughout the year and then lost the grand final to Paddington, whose star player on the day of the grand final was an ex-Balmain player, Wally Messenger - the brother of Dally Messenger. (Wally also played in a Rugby League test match for Australia).

The club disbanded in 1918 due to the effects of the First World War. Many SFL players enlisted - some of course never to return. A Steptoe was the first Balmain player killed during the war. He came to Balmain from the Maitland area and was killed in action at Lone Pine during the Gallipoli campaign. From 1919 until 1925 we again played in the SFL and fielded a Reserve Grade team as well. During these 7 years we managed to win. only 16 games - an average of just over 2 games a year. For 1926 the SFL restructured under a "District Scheme" and there was no place for Balmain.

The club reformed in 194 7 and again played in the SFL from 1948 until 1987. During this period we were mostly unsuccessful on the field. In this 40 year period we made the finals just twice - 1969 we were beaten by about 100 points by Newtown in the first semi-final and in 1983, under the leadership of , we lost the Grand Final. Reserve grade and third grade both got to one grand final each in this period, both lost these games by less than a goal.

At the end of the 1987 season we were thrown out of the SFL and played for the next six years in the SF A We played in the grand final every year, winning 3. For season 1992 we were undefeated and in 1993 we lost just two games - the second semi-final and the Grand Final.

In 1994 we were invited back into the SFL and in a disastrous season we lost every game, mostly by huge margins. 1995 saw one win and 1996 five wins. 1997 gave us our first ever Senior Premiership in the First Division. 1998 gave us our second with Reserve Grade being runners up. This year gave us our third grand final in a row- an unthinkable achievement just 3 years ago! An * beside the name of the team played means that the player was Selected for the team but so far I have been unable to confirm if the player actually played. ; ..

Congratulations to RAY HALL who was drafted by Richmond for season 1999. After a successful season in Reserve Grade, he played the last game of the year in the firsts. Ray played for Balmain Third Grade (then under 19s) in 1996. He tas runner up in the best and fairest for the team. He was an under 16 that year and played against much! older and stronger opponents. Our coaches (Matthew Coles and Andrew Kyprianou) wrote about Jim in the year book" ... he has great skills and is very mobile. At just 16 years of age, he has a big future in football." He went from Balmain to Hunter Under 18s and then the Rams and now Richmond. I I Drummoyne Power Junior AFL Club At the end of Season '98, a group of parents dissatisfied with their Junior AFL Club and seeking an opportunity closer to their local area began negotiations with the NSW/ACT AFL and Drummoyne Council to start a Junior AFL Club in the Drummoyne area. It was to be a 'waterways' club encompassing the areas on either side of Gladesville Bridge with its playing ground and training areas by the margin of picturesque Five Dock Bay.

By 27 August 1998, after careful scrutiny of the review of Australian Football in NSW/ACT, Taking AFL into the Next Century, a Steering Committee had been set up for Drummoyne, and released a document, Business Plan for Drummoyne Power Junior AFL Club, which carefully considered all the recommendations of the aforementioned review. This business plan was accepted by the AFL, and what eventuated represents a truly praiseworthy effort from all those concerned with the establishing of Drummoyne Power to help people in New South Wales better appreciate the great game of Australian Rules Football.

1999 has been the Club's first full year of operation following its establishment at the end of 1998 and the beginning of 1999. It has been a very productive year, and I am pleased to report that those administrative arrangements introduced at the beginning, subject to some fine tuning have worked well, thanks to the enthusiastic contributions of volunteers throughout this year, volunteers I might add that extend beyond the Club members to other Junior AFL clubs, the Seniors, Port Power, the St George Association, our patrons, Council and State Governments, the media, and to those several public and private enterprises that have supported us financially. It would simply be impossible to achieve what we have achieved without their myriad support. Words cannot encompass the gratitude that is owed to these people and corporations. I acknowledge them here.

My further thanks and congratulations go to the children, some of whom I have had the privilege of coaching: the sheer delight of Auskickers, the grit of our U14s, many of whom started from scratch. One's heart warms and one is humbled at the trust they put in us coaches and trainers as we send them off "to do battle" each week, trying to contain and develop their natural enthusiasm into something worthwhile and noble yet tangible: a competitive, skilled, sportsmanlike team spirit coupled with the occasional win! Congratulations to the Drummoyne U11 sand U12s for reaching your grand finals, and to the 12s for winning theirs.

In their inaugural year Drummoyne Power have consolidated their position as a club doing well on and off the field. In the year 2000, it is hoped that their stable structure and innovative programs will aid in the development of further strategies designed to provide even better services for NSW football as we move into the creation of the Sydney City Association. If the structure and the programs work, because of continued "committed, capable and persistent efforts from many parents" then the way ahead promises to be just as productive as that now behind us.
