International Races 2016 “York has been first class with me. They’ve made me feel like a friend here, so I’m happy, it’s been perfect.” Irad Ortiz leading US jockey placed aboard Acapulco in the 2015 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes INTERNATIONAL RACES 2016 • Record seasonal prize fund of over £7 million • 30 black type races • Group One Juddmonte International ranked number one of all thoroughbred horse races in Great Britain • Overall Showcase Champion at the RCA Showcase Awards • Northern End Development including new Weighing Room, Parade Ring Restaurant and Owners Entrance building • ROA Gold Standard Racecourse and Horsemen's Group Premier Tier prize money agreement York Racecourse has a proud Welcome to York Racecourse tradition of staging the very best of thoroughbred racing dating back to 1731. As one of the leading racetracks in the world and host to some of the best racedays in the British summer racing calendar, we very much look forward to welcoming you to York. Our flagship Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival runs from Wednesday 17 to Saturday 20 August, which sees the cumulative value of the twenty-five races reach a record £4 million, including the Group One contests – the Juddmonte International, the Darley Yorkshire Oaks and the Coolmore Nunthorpe. For 2016, York Racecourse is delighted to host the race ranked number one in Great Britain last year*, the £900,000 Group 1 Juddmonte International. As the richest race ever staged at York, it enjoys a prize-money boost that makes it the highlight of the Festival. Other Festival highlights include the richest races of their type for juvenile colts and fillies, the £220,000 Group 2 Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack and the £200,000 Group 2 Lowther respectively. A combination of top quality racing, a tremendous atmosphere and great fun, the Ebor Festival is the highlight of our year. This brochure intends to assist you, as international owners, trainers and horsemen with information prior to your visit to York Racecourse. We very much look forward to welcoming you to the Knavesmire. Good luck for the 2016 season. Lord Grimthorpe, Chairman *ranked by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities “I had a wonderful time at your beautiful racetrack and city... I do want to say that everyone at the stables were so pleasant and accommodating, I can't thank you & all the staff enough.” Wesley Ward US Trainer of Acapulco placed in the 2015 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes 2 In recent years, the Knavesmire has welcomed overseas raiders to our Group races. Highlights such as world-class sprint stars Acapulco (2015) and Ortensia (2012) in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe to talented fillies Pleascach (2015) and Shareta (2012) in the Group 1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks plus Criterion (2015) in the Juddmonte International. Last year’s international visitors, including Wesley Ward’s stable stars, were the first to enjoy our completed Northern End development. I hope the selection of images do justice in highlighting the recent investments that keep the horsemen at the heart of what we do at York. Our Northern End Development includes a larger pre-parade ring, new saddling boxes, wash-down area and Winning Connections Room. In addition our new Weighing Room opened to popular acclaim last year. We are proud to be able to call our new facilities award winning, complimenting other investments made in recent years to the racing surface itself and the Owners’ Club. The Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival proves a highlight to our season and this guide, but it forms part of a season that has on offer a record of over £7 million in prize money. Our seventeen days of racing boast a total of 30 Group and Listed races. Details of these Pattern contests can be found at the back of our guide. All the team’s details can be found on the back page, so please do not hesitate to contact us with any enquiries. Please do also use The International Racing Bureau, under the guidance of Adrian Beaumont, to assist with details of how to enter (nominate), medications controls in the UK, shipping, quarantine as well as stabling and training facilities and any other enquiries. The team and I very much hope to see you on the Knavesmire in 2016. We use some of Yorkshire's best local produce to create healthy, wholesome and interesting food at York Racecourse with a Yorkshire twist. York Racecourse Hospitality has been catering at York for over 30 years and have been gaining awards and accolades for our extensive catering offer at York Racecourse from real coffees, delicious food to go, extensive lunch options and gourmet hospitality. We take a huge pride in the fact that much of what we offer is made and cooked on the premises or supplied by local owner / producer suppliers. We cater for vegetarian, nut allergies, soya free, Coeliac food (gluten free) and wheat free. We realise it is important to understand the difference as well as the complexity in producing the various types of allergy sensitive food. We therefore ensure we use separate tongs, toasters and fryers along with the more obvious separate knives and chopping boards. We understand that gluten free food is suitable for a wheat free diet but that wheat free food may not mean it is also gluten free. Vegetarian Food York Racecourse is renowned for its food and the vegetarian dishes created by our expert chefs are no exception - meaning that spending a day at York Racecourse as a vegetarian can be eagerly looked forward to. We are proud to source many of our ingredients locally, meaning that much of our food, especially the cheeses, herbs and salads, have a distinct Yorkshire flavour. Our meals are prepared on site from scratch, giving all our dishes a real home cooked feel. We are proud to make it known that you won’t find any pre-packed vegetables or tins of sauces in any of our kitchens! As part of our welcome to vegetarians, this section is intended to provide some help on exactly where to pick up a delicious meal, and will provide a few examples of the type of dishes on offer.

A GUIDE FOR HORSEMEN 2016 - ROA Gold Standard Racecourse & Horsemen's Group Premier Tier prize money agreement - Record seasonal prize fund of over £7 million - 30 black type races - Group One Juddmonte International ranked number one race in Great Britain - Overall Showcase Champion at the RCA Showcase Awards Welcome to York Racecourse Everyone at York Racecourse very much looks forward to welcoming you to the Knavesmire for the 2016 season. This booklet has been produced to provide owners and horsemen with information prior to your visit to York. Please do not hesitate to contact the team if you have further queries (see page 19 for their contact details). York Racecourse has a proud tradition of staging the very best of thoroughbred racing dating back to 1731. York is an independent racecourse run for the good of racing at York. We have no beneficial shareholders and pay no dividends – everything we make is reinvested into prize money, facilities and the racecourse experience at York. This year sees a fifth consecutive year of growth in prize money to a record level of £7 million. This represents an increase of over £300,000 on last year and growth of 40%+ since 2011. Our seventeen day season now has 30 Group and Listed races. All afternoon fixtures will have a prize fund of at least £100,000 with a feature race of at least £30,000 and every race will have a prize fund of at least £10,000. The Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival runs from Wednesday 17 to Saturday 20 August. All four of our feature races will receive a boost which, when combined with other increases, will see the cumulative value of the twenty-five races post another record exceeding £4 million in prize funds.

ABSTRACT A considerable body of evidence exists to show that performance-related pay schemes can raise worker productivity with much of this increase due to worker sorting. However, variations in the power of performance-related pay contracts are rarely observed. The thoroughbred horse racing industry offers such an opportunity. Elite jockeys are paid an annual salary (retainer) as well as receiving a riding fee and share of prize money earned in races. Contrary to earlier research, we find no evidence of worker shirking when the power of incentive contracts is reduced through switching into retainer contract. We find a positive relationship between jockey pay and performance in this industry, with jockeys delivering greater prize money for owners and themselves. Moreover, retainer contracts result in legacy effects with superior performance continuing for elite jockeys even after their retainer agreements have expired. We argue this is due to a reduction in monitoring costs and enhanced opportunities for previously retained jockeys to ride successfully for large-scale racehorse owners. This all points to successful selection and monitoring by horse race owners, their executives and trainers. Our results are significant for employers and employees working under performance-related pay schemes. Word Count: 8,594 Keywords: Contracts, incentives, horse racing.
