The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury & The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of York July, 2008 Most Reverend Fathers in God, We write as bishops, priests and deacons of the Provinces of Canterbury and York, who have sought, by God’s grace, in our various ministries, to celebrate the Sacraments and preach the Word faithfully; to form, nurture and catechise new Christians; to pastor the people of God entrusted to our care; and, through the work of our dioceses, parishes and institutions, to build up the Kingdom and to further God’s mission to the world in this land. Our theological convictions, grounded in obedience to Scripture and Tradition, and attentive to the need to discern the mind of the whole Church Catholic in matters touching on Faith and Order, lead us to doubt the sacramental ministry of those women ordained to the priesthood by the Church of England since 1994. Having said that, we have engaged with the life of the Church of England in a myriad of ways, nationally and locally, and have made sincere efforts to work courteously and carefully with those with whom we disagree. In the midst of this disagreement over Holy Order, we have, we believe, borne particular witness to the cause of Christian unity, and to the imperative of Our Lord’s command that ‘all may be one.’ We include those who have given many years service to the Church in the ordained ministry, and others who are very newly ordained. We believe that we demonstrate the vitality of the tradition which we represent and which has formed us in our discipleship and ministry – a tradition which, we believe, constitutes an essential and invaluable part of the life and character of the Church of England, without which it would be deeply impoverished.

together THE VOICE OF CATHOLIC ANGLICANS WINTER 2016 2017 NATIONAL FESTIVAL Saturday 17th June St John the Baptist, Coventry Fleet Street, Coventry CV1 3AY First things first 12 noon When we think about ‘mission’ – that is, if we think about mission (and I really hope that SOLEMN CONCELEBRATED MASS mission is quickly coming up the PCC agenda of every parish affiliated to The Society) – we’re Principal Celebrant: probably thinking about some kind of plan – even a local ‘mission action plan’. Bishop Roger Jupp, Superior-General Where to start? What to say? What to do? 2.00 pm : Annual Meeting of Associates Who to? Why do it? ‘Have we all got the plan? Synchronize watches …’ 3.00 pm : Exposition, Procession of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction Priests Associate: those wishing to concelebrate must inform the And then—stupid creatures that Secretary-General via Mary Bashford at: [email protected] we are, only then—we ask God or telephone 0121 382 5533 to bless it, to swing in behind us, to endorse what we’ve put together, to fill our plans with his life and love, and give success to the work of our hands. Put it like that, there’s something clearly not quite right about that approach. It’s dangerously close to thinking that it’s our job to work out how we can take God, even smuggle God, into places and into lives where he’s never been before, when—of course!— God is always, always already in people’s lives, long before we turn up. When we stop and re-think (or when we’ve learnt the hard way because our precious plans have collapsed) we realize that the real mission God gives to us is where he is already opening the door.

Churchyard DAC MEMBERS --- BIOGRAPHIES Membership of the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches 2016 FRANK EUL, CHAIR Frank Eul is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Until his retirement in 2003 Frank was a Director of DTZ Debenham Tie Leung, an international firm of commercial property advisers, and Chairman of its Global Occupier Services business. Between 2003 and 2010 he was a member of the Board of Governors of Sheffield Hallam University serving a Chairman of the Finance Committee, and Pro Chancellor of the University and Chairman of the Board. He has served as a Board member of a number of publicly funded regeneration companies. Frank is now a trustee of a number of charitable trusts and Treasurer of ‘The Friends of Sidmouth Parish Church’. In 2011 he received an Honorary Doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University for Services to the City Of Sheffield. As Chairman of the DAC, Frank believes that the church as a building has an important role to play in the built and social environment in the towns and villages of Devon, and the purpose of the Committee should not just be about conservation. There is a balance to be struck between protecting the architectural or historic significance of a building and providing a centre for Christian worship in a community which is relevant to worshippers of all ages in the 21st century. It is the role of the Chairman to ensure that this balance is achieved. JEREMY PEARSON, DEPUTY CHAIR For many years Jeremy Pearson worked as a curator in Westcountry museums, latterly with The National Trust during which time he got to know the highways and byways of Devon very well.

  • AD CLERUM: Advent 2018
AD CLERUM: Advent 2018 Dear Colleagues It is good to be able to greet you in these days running up to Christmas before Carol Services and Christmas shopping takes us all over. In the frenetic busyness of December and in the current maelstrom surrounding Brexit, it is hard to hold on to our belief in the coming reign of God and the sovereignty of grace. Turn on the television and so many things seem to militate against it. But this is precisely what we celebrate in these days of Advent. Much has been happening since last I wrote to you, not least with Bishop Jackie beginning her episcopal ministry among us. But there have also been other significant changes in senior personnel. This Christmas sees the retirement of Martyn Goss after 35 years as Director of Church and Society. During that time Martyn has built up a county-wide network of contacts and relationships, and coordinated projects ranging from ‘Shrinking the Footprint’ to championing Fairtrade. At the end of December after 8 years in post, Ian Chandler has decided to step down from being Archdeacon of Plymouth and to seek a new position. Becky Totterdell also steps down this Christmas as Diocesan Director of Ordinands. Like Martyn and Ian, Becky has given faithful service to the Diocese over many years and we wish her well as she continues her work as a Canon Residentiary at the Cathedral. We give thanks for all three of them and pray God’s blessing on them. #FollowTheStar and A Church Near You The arrival on our television screens of this year’s John Lewis Christmas advert complete with Elton John playing the piano signals that the season of conspicuous consumption is upon us.

  • Exeter Diocesan Mission & Pastoral Committee Annual Report: 1 July 2018
Paper S/21/18 Exeter Diocesan Mission & Pastoral Committee Annual Report: 1st July 2018 1 1. Introduction Section 2(5) of the Mission and Pastoral Measure 2011 places a duty upon the Diocesan Mission and Pastoral Committee (DMPC) to provide an annual report to Diocesan Synod on its activities during the past year. In line with the practice in previous years the present report runs mid-year to mid-year, in this case covering the period from 1st July 2017 to 30th June 2018. The end date has been determined by the fact that the final meeting of the DMPC (which has the same membership as Bishop’s Diocesan Council) prior to the October Meeting of Diocesan Synod took place on 18th July. This report therefore does not cover any developments after 30 th June. The way in which the various work is spread through the year can now be examined through the Diocesan Board of Finance Quarterly Operational Reports. 2. Delegation of Duties In the interests of better local knowledge, involvement, ownership and support, the DMPC has delegated all of its duties, other than those which it is legally obliged to retain, to several sub-committees. Most duties are delegated to the Four Archidiaconal Mission and Pastoral Committees (AMPCs) a decision which was made at the DMPC meeting held on 29 th November 2014. Each AMPC is chaired by a Suffragan Bishop and is attended by the Archdeacon and all Rural Deans and Lay Chairs together with a small number of elected and/or nominated members. Each committee is administered by the Diocesan Mission and Pastoral Secretary.
