FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OSCAR®-NOMINATED PRODUCTION DESIGNER JIM BISSELL TO RECEIVE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD AT 19TH ANNUAL ART DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS ON JANUARY 31, 2015 LOS ANGELES, July 15, 2014 — Emmy®-winning and Oscar®-nominated Production Designer Jim Bissell will receive the Art Directors Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 19th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards on January 31, 2015 at a black- tie ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The announcement was made today by John Shaffner, ADG Council Chairman, and ADG Award Producers Dave Blass and James Pearse Connelly. “Jim Bissell’s work as a Production Designer is legendary and we are proud to rank him among the best in the history of our profession. He is an extraordinary artist and accomplished leader in the industry and it is our pleasure to name him as this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient,” said Shaffner. A veteran leader of the ADG, Bissell was a past Vice President and a Board member for more than 15 years. He also chaired the Guild’s Awards Committee for the first three years of its existence. Bissell’s distinguished work can be seen on such notable films as E.T. the Extra- Terrestrial (1982), which took home four Oscars® with an additional five Oscar® nominations in 1983; The Rocketeer (1991), Jumanji (1995), 300 (2006), Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) and most recently The Monuments Men (2014), directed by and starring George Clooney. Monuments Men is Jim’s fourth collaboration with Clooney, which began with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), followed with Oscar®-nominated Good Night, and Good Luck (2005) and continuing with Leatherheads (2007). -

To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. MEDIA CONTACT Teni Melidonian [email protected] Toni Thompson [email protected] January 24, 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 84th ACADEMY AWARDS® NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced today (Tuesday, January 24) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar® nominee Jennifer Lawrence. Sherak and Lawrence, who was nominated for an Academy Award® for her lead performance in “Winter’s Bone,” announced the nominees in 10 of the 24 Award categories at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives. Lists of nominations in all categories were then distributed to the media in attendance and online via the official Academy Awards website, www.oscar.com. Academy members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominations are selected by vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees. Nominations ballots were mailed to the 5,783 voting members in late December and were returned directly to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the international accounting firm, for tabulation. Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for members this weekend at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings also will be held at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and in London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area. All active and life members of the Academy are eligible to select the winners in all categories, although in five of them – Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject and Foreign Language Film – members can vote only if they have seen all of the nominated films in those categories. -

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. iii Abstract A person does not experience architecture as a purely physical construct. Lived space transcends mere materiality, as each individual experiences the world outside oneself through the unique fi lter of one’s own mind. In this way, architecture becomes subjective: infl uenced by the memories and imagination of its viewers, who use the physical realm as a take-off point from which to shape their own environments within the context of their respective psyches. Fictional architecture (or the architecture of narrative) uses this same concept to build the environments in fi lm and literature; although, in these cases, the cues given to an audience are images, sounds and/or words rather than three-dimensional space. The term ‘architecture of narrative’, as used in this thesis, refers to the architecture of books and fi lms which must rely on imaginary environments. This type of architecture is free of the strict rules and regulations which govern built form in the corporeal world; however, in order for an audience to relate to and engage with these imaginary environments, it must still employ boundaries which give the fi ctional realm stability, coherence and continuity. -

The black-tie ceremony announcing winners will take place Saturday, February 4, 2012 at the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills with Paula Poundstone serving as host for the third consecutive year. A Lifetime Achievement Award will go to Emmy Award® winning Production Designer Tony Walton. In addition, the ADG will induct the following legendary Production Designers from the past into its Hall of Fame: Robert Boyle, William Darling and Alfred Junge. This year's Art Directors Guild Cinematic Imagery Award will be presented to the principal team behind the Harry Potter films including Producers David Heyman and David Barron; Director David Yates; creator and author J.K.
