Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings August 2, 2018 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1939-The Reds announce plans to add 3,100 seats to Crosley Field, by adding a second deck to the pavilions down the left and right field lines MLB.COM Poor defense, baserunning sink Reds in finale Four-run rally in 7th cut short after Casali thrown out at home plate By Mark Sheldon MLB.com @m_sheldon Aug. 1st, 2018 DETROIT -- Since he became Reds interim manager in April, Jim Riggleman has made attention to detail a big part of his daily message to the players. At times throughout the season, Riggleman has organized drills that focus on fundamentals from baserunning, to cutoff throws, covering bases and more. So it wasn't hard to see the disappointment Riggleman felt following a 7-4 Reds loss to the Tigers that completed Detroit's two- game series sweep. Numerous mistakes befuddled Cincinnati defensively and on the bases at Comerica Park. "When you play like that, you're not supposed to win," Riggleman said. "It's not bad effort, it's bad performance. We just have to somehow find a way to clean it up. It was very sloppy." Some of the mistakes included: • Left fielder Phillip Ervin twice missed the cutoff man on hits and it cost the Reds two runs. • A relay throw from shortstop Jose Peraza one-hopped over catcher Curt Casali's head for another run. • Casali ran into a double play during a four-run rally in the seventh inning. "That's the difference between a good club and a really good club," Casali said. -

Weekly Notes 072817
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31). -

The Boston Red Sox Monday, April 15, 2019 * The Boston Globe David Price pitches seven shutout innings, leads Red Sox past Orioles Nora Princiotti When the Red Sox starting pitching struggled over the opening weeks of this season, that problem begat a second issue. Already going through 2019 without a traditional closer, the Boston bullpen found itself taxed less than a month in. That made David Price’s sparkler Sunday badly needed. Price (1-1, 3.79 ERA) went seven innings on an efficient 92 pitches, 64 of them for strikes. He gave up no runs and only three hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. More, he set things up nicely for Ryan Brasier to pitch the eighth and Matt Barnes to pitch the ninth in an economical 4-0 Red Sox win against the Orioles. “Everybody knew where we were pitching-wise today and for [Price] to go seven, give the ball to those last two guys, it was very important for us,” said manager Alex Cora. “Now tomorrow we kind of reset and we’re ready for the game tomorrow.” Baltimore starter John Means went five innings and gave up just one run but the Red Sox did the bulk of their scoring against Orioles relievers in the eighth inning when Xander Bogaerts hit a hanging slider off Josh Lucas to the batter’s eye for a three-run home run. “I was looking for off-speed the whole at-bat,” Bogaerts said. “After he threw me that first slider I thought [darn], I might be struck out right now because his first slider was nasty. -
