- .--~-- Primary Census Abstracts

These abstracts show figures of population according to eight livelihood cla~ses for every town and village. In the case of most municipal areas, figures have been given for wards. as wetl. They are in ·essence a village directory, with the data exhibIted according to livelihood classes, instead of communities as in 1 \J4l.

The area figures given m column ;) have been obtained from the District Inspector of Land Records of Amreli or from local records. The area of as calculated by the Suryeyor General of India is 1,6114' 2 ~q. mile~.

The figures given in columns 4 and 5 and 9 to 12 have been extracted [rom the National Registers prepared by enumerators after the census. Tbese Registers consisted of a transcription of the replie~ to the more important census questions in respect of every person enumerated. Figures of literates according to tracts, derived' from the census slips, shown in fable D-VII, are more reliable than the village figures derived fiom the National Registers. The census slip on which the replies to·, the census questions were recorded was the main document. The National Register ''was merely a copy, In addition, 'mistakes seem to have oc~red while extracting literacy figures for villages· 111 the Tabulation qffice .. Tbe: pe,centage of literacy in tht: di.strict was 2~j. 71~b according to ta,Lle O-VI L It was 2;:1.26% accordmg to sample table C-IV, and 2~j.48':{) according· to the Primary Cemus Abstracts,

Information contained in columns ~';) to 33 has beep extracted li·{)tl\ the data collected for each village by the Bombay District Gazetteer'\; ( Revision) Editorial Board.
