2.14 Significant Activities and contributions made by IQAC

 The IQAC kept track of the schedules/plans and implementation of the various academic and administrative activities and intervened whenever necessary with suggestions to ensure the maintenance of quality parameters.

 Successfully completed all the tasks entrusted.

 The Evaluative Report on the Progress of Autonomy was prepared by the IQAC and submitted.

 The annual report was compiled and sent to Mahatma Gandhi University.

 The AQAR for 2014-15 was compiled and uploaded.

 The feedback from all stakeholders was taken and summaries prepared. In this regard, the student feedback form for the appraisal of teachers was edited after careful scrutiny to include 20 questions that were considered essential. For the first time, the student feedback was done online.

 The IQAC met with the faculty members as well as the members of the administrative, technical and support staff to get an informal feedback on the challenges they face in the carrying out their responsibilities. Following this, a seminar was organised to address these challenges and to give the staff members the extra edge to function effectively in the present times especially in the context of autonomy.

 Several ranking surveys were done eg., NIRF 2016 and the Neilson Today.

 The academic audit was initiated by the IQAC.

 The recommendations and suggestions of the Environment Audit committee were listed and necessary follow up was done.

 The IQAC had spearheaded the restructuring of the syllabi of the existing 17 UG & 15 PG courses and the designing of the syllabi of 5 new courses (2 PG & 3 UG). They were successfully implemented this year.  All the necessary documentation of data and information was done meticulously through a system of monthly reports collected from all departments, clubs, cells and statutory bodies. These are also archived in a central repository.

 After a close scrutiny of the curricular/co-curricular activities and the functioning of the various departments, committees, clubs and cells of the college during 2014- 15, the IQAC listed out the areas requiring attention and improvement with regard to effectiveness and quality and brought them to the notice of those concerned so that necessary corrective measures could be taken.

 The IQAC worked out and implemented a plan of action to streamline the design, layout and contents of the restructured syllabus of the various departments, to remove errata , bring about greater uniformity and ensure quality.

 The student feedback form for the appraisal of teachers was edited after careful scrutiny to include only 20 questions that were considered essential as opposed to 40 questions of the previous year. Also as recommended, the student feedback of teachers was done online. A faculty feedback was also taken online.

 An action plan was made to follow up the environment audit and strategies were devised to ensure its effectiveness. The services of the Bhoomitra Sena Club were invited to carry out the follow up and ensure that the shortlisted suggestions of the audit committee were implemented.

 Necessary steps were taken to ensure that the EVS syllabus designed and proposed by the UGC would be incorporated into the curriculum for all the UG programmes.

 A more effective mechanism was worked out to evaluate the extent and degree of success in the utilization of autonomy. Accordingly an evaluative report was prepared and submitted by the IQAC.

 It was decided to organise a workshop on mentoring and also to redesign a student profile and progress card to include all relevant details of the students and show their progression.

1.4 Whether there is any revision/update of regulation or syllabi, if yes, mention their salient aspects.

 The syllabi of the existing 17 UG & 15 PG programmes that were restructured and sent to the University for approval was implemented in 2015-16. The programmes

were meticulously designed with graduate attributes enumerated and competencies defined to enable effective teaching-learning, and providing a blueprint of the final

assessment of every course.  The syllabi of the following 9 new programmes that were proposed under the

autonomy scheme were designed and implemented - M. Sc. Zoology, MTTM in

Travel and Tourism Management, BMS in International Business, B.Voc in Food Processing Technology and B.Voc in Software development, PG Diploma in

Management in Business Analytics, PG Diploma in Fashion Designing, PG Diploma in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics and Diploma in Health Assistance.

 The guidelines were revised with regard to the conduct of supplementary examinations and granting of mercy chance.

 It was decided to conduct the graduation ceremony for the PG students of the first

batch of Autonomy, a practice to be continued.

 RFID embedded cards were made compulsory for students, faculty members and

non teaching staff to be used for identification and to allow access to restricted areas such as the library.

 Guidelines were prepared for admission to the newly proposed M.Phil programmes.

2.6 Innovative processes adopted by the institution in Teaching and Learning:

 St Teresa’s College in association with the Kerala State Higher Education Council and Department of Tourism conducted a KNOWLEDGE FAIR, 2016 to showcase the innovative abilities and inventions of Arts and Science Colleges.  Departmental and Intercollegiate fests and fairs such as REAP – the interdisciplinary intercollegiate research fair conducted by the Dept of Home Science to provide a platform for presentation of recent research studies, and PANACHE by the English Department, French Fest, Commerce Fest, etc  Applied extension activities such as those conducted as part of curriculum such as the Teresian Rural Outreach Programme (TROP)  On the job training on basic and advanced level such as on Baking and Confectionary provided to students of Home Science in collaboration with Institute of Baking Technology, Chennai and working at front office jobs in hotels, in advertising firms and teaching in schools for Communicative English students.  Classes by experts eg, Discourse on classics by English Department, classes on nutrition by Home Science Dept organized in connection with National Nutrition week, World Diabetes Day and World Food Day, etc.

 Screening documentaries and holding interactions with filmmakers and activists to understand various social issues as conducted by the Dept. of Communicative English  Exposure programmes and visits. 2.12 How does IQAC Contribute/Monitor/Evaluate the Teaching & Learning processes :

 Every member of the faculty is given a Teacher’s Handbook at the beginning of the year in which all the details pertaining to teaching such as lesson plans, tests, assignments, projects, mentoring, tutoring, remedial classes, leave taken, self appraisal by teacher, etc. are noted. This is checked periodically, and at the end of the year submitted to the Principal by the respective Heads of departments.

 In order to ensure that a continuous and comprehensive evaluation of students is done the IQAC periodically gets reports from the Examination Cell. The IQAC checks the examination schedule for the timely conduct of sessional and final examinations and Open Houses.

 On publication of results a meeting of the Heads of department is called to analyze the results, look into the areas of poor performance and suggest measures for improvement.

 The IQAC directs and monitors the activities of the Teresian Research and Consultancy Cell (TRACC) which coordinates and promotes the research activities of the institution to achieve excellence in research and to evolve as a thought leadership centre.

 The IQAC keeps track of content related talks and seminars conducted by and for the students.

 Remedial, mentoring and tutorial classes are monitored through reports submitted periodically.

 This year the IQAC conducted a workshop on the theme of ‘Mentoring’ in order to equip teachers to provide necessary assistance to students to acquire meaningful experiences for learning and to facilitate their holistic development and progression.

 The IQAC gathered feedback through student appraisal of teachers, analyzed it and provided a feedback summary to individual teachers. Graphical representation was provided for clarity of data.

 Parent feedback was also taken online and evaluated for further action.

 Faculty feedback was taken online for the first time.

 The IQAC is helped in monitoring and evaluating the teaching and learning processes through the contributions of the Academic Deans of the Arts, Science and Commerce streams.

3. Research, Consultancy and Extension

3.1 Initiatives of the IQAC in Sensitizing/Promoting Research Climate in the institution

 The IQAC directs and monitors the activities of the Teresian Research and Consultancy

Cell (TRACC) of St. Teresa’s College which coordinates and promotes the research activities of the institution to achieve excellence in research and to evolve as a thought

leadership centre. (TRACC) provides a common platform for the students and faculty from all disciplines to explore multidisciplinary / interdisciplinary topics which would be

helpful to the society and mankind.

 A Research and Development Department for St. Teresa’s College, was inaugurated on 7th December 2015 aimed at initiating high quality research for the promotion of

innovative thinking and for the development of society in general.

 A seminar on ‘Advanced Research in Frontier Areas of Science and Technology’ was

held on 7th December 2015.

 A National Conference on Modern Trends in Research-2015 was convened for the

research guides and the faculty members who are pursuing research in various research centres of the Institution and provided the faculty members of the institution an

opportunity to facilitate discussions, disseminate research findings and to keep abreast of the newer developments, theories and techniques in the field of research.

 Faculty members were encouraged to attend seminars and conferences and engage in research. Seed money was offered to faculty members to attend International Seminars.

The departments were encouraged to conduct invited talks for their faculty members. The IQAC keeps track of their participation in such faculty development activities.

 Incentives were given to guest lecturers for research publications and an award was given for the best publication.

3.26 Major Activities during the year in the sphere of extension activities and Institutional Social Responsibility

1. TROP (Teresian Rural Outreach Programme)

St. Teresa’s College has always believed in a system of education that not only imparts sound academic values but also nurtures a humanistic world view which inspires the students to become socially responsible citizens who utilize their knowledge and skills for the empowerment of the underprivileged sections of the society. The aim of the Teresian Outreach Program (TROP) is dual, focusing on the need to uplift the underprivileged in the community, and at the same time inculcate in students the values of service, commitment to the community and society, thereby conscientising them on the needs and demands of the country at large. Teresian Outreach Program (TROP) for the year 2015-16 focused on women empowerment, skill development, training programmes on varied aspects such as environmental awareness including waste and water management, personality development, social security schemes in rural areas, e-commerce applications, computer literacy, kitchen gardening, simple mathematics, e-governance training, proficiency in English and communication skills, learning disabilities, develop scientific aptitude of students, awareness

14315 - St. Teresa's College (Autonomous), Ernakulam, Kerala AQAR 2015-16 Page 22 on cancer, nutrition, health, sanitation and hygiene, lifestyle disorders,etc. The various departments of the college took up a theme and adopted an area, and students and staff were actively and enthusiastically involved in fostering a link between the community and the college and addressing the needs of the community by coordinating with the parish / Kudumbasree units of the respective areas. The target groups of the programmes included women and students of various schools. The majority of the programmes were held in the adopted rural areas while some were held at the college(Computer literacy to facilitate better learning with appropriate infrastructure). Eco-friendly initiatives are also a highlight of this year’s activities. (Details included as Appendix under Best Practices)

2. BMS (Bhoomitra Sena Club)

The College aims at grooming socially responsible and environmentally conscious young women who value the bounties of nature and strive to preserve them. Such moulding is being done by various departments and particularly by the Bhoomithra Sena Club. Bhoomithra Sena Club (Code No: 107/EKM/05/10), formed with support from Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Kerala, strives to promote green citizenship among its members as well as citizens in general. Through these, the college has been organizing nature camps, seminars, debates, lectures, quiz programmes on environmental issues and actively working to initiate change in students and in varied localities.Green initiatives of the college have focused mainly on scientific waste management and energy conservation. Activities for 2015-16 were carried out in three functional categories: Solid Waste Management, Energy Conservation and other environment related activities.

3. Solid Waste Management

The faculty in-charge of BhoomitraSena club is conducting a research on “Role of the Local Governments in Solid, Liquid Waste Management and Environment Protection-A Study of Panchayats in Kerala”. As part of the research, waste audits were conducted in the following Panchayats. Chemical analysis of water quality was also done in sample water bodies since the first sign of environment stress will be reflected in water quality

4. “Ezhazhakilekku Ezhikkara”

The project aims at encouraging households at Ezhikkara Panchayat in Ernakulam district to implement segregation of solid waste and hand over plastic waste for recycling and safe disposal instead of burning, throwing or disposing in the nearby backwaters. The project which was started last year among 400 households in Ward 7 of Ezhikkara Panchayat was extended towards 390 households in Ward 10. BMC members conducted several awareness classes as a part of this project, and consequently plastic waste is being segregated by households, collected by Kudumbasree members and handed over to CREDAI Clean City Movement (CCCM) for recycling.

5. ‘E-waste’- Awareness and Collection Program

On 9th February 2016, Bhoomitra Sena club in association with NSS unit of St. Teresa’s College organized an awareness program on the health hazards caused due to E-waste. On 11th February BMC and NSS unit of the college joined hands with the Cochin Corporation, collected E-waste from the college and handed it over to Cochin Corporation.

6. Voicing concern against ineffective waste management

Actor Sheela and Janaseva Shisubhavan joined St. Teresas College students to launch a stand- in strike in against the inability of authorities to implement an effective waste management plan.

7. National Service Scheme

The NSS unit of the college conducted the following programmes:

 Under the initiative of the NSS Unit, the students and teachers were encouraged to contribute liberally for saving the life of the young student Ambliy Fathima, under the directives of the Vice Chancellor and the NSS Programme coordinator, M. G. University.  NSS unit of St. Teresa's College celebrated the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 26th June 2015.  NSS volunteers and students of the college took a pledge against drugs. A street drama

against drug abuse was performed by the NSS volunteers in the college as well as in St. Teresa's Convent Girl's High School, Ernakulam. NSS Unit of St. Teresa's College organised a Blood Donation Camp on 11th August 2015 in collaboration with Cochin South Rotary Club, with the support and co-operation of the field publicity department of Government of India. More than 60 students donated blood.  NSS volunteers participated in a ‘Walkathon’ by Canserve (a charitable society run by cancer survivors and volunteers) to spread awareness regarding fighting the menace with a positive vigour, on September 6, 2015  NSS Unit, St. Teresa’s College, along with “Make A Difference” (MAD) team ventured on a ‘Backathon’, a fund raising venture to help street children and orphans on September 13, 2015  The NSS unit of St. Teresa’s college, along with ‘Vayomitram’ scheme of Social Security Mission, organized a programme for the elderly ,on 1st October 2015 UN International Day of Older Persons, at Town Hall auditorium, Ernakulam . The NSS volunteers interacted with the senior citizens and presented cultural events and shared a sumptuous lunch with the elderly. They took a pledge stating that they will be committed to the care of the elderly.  On 1st October, the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day, the NSS Unit, along with the District Medical Office, organized a rally that helped in conveying the importance of donating blood to save lives in times of crises.  NSS Unit, St. Teresa’s College, joined hands with Canserve, an NGO standing up for fighting against Cancer, in the “Locks for Hope” campaign, which focused on hair donation for Cancer patients on October 14th, 2015  As part of International White Cane Day, the NSS unit of St. Teresa's College organised an awareness programme on 15th October, 2015 by distributing and selling International White Cane Day stamps to students and deposited the amount collected in the account of ‘ International Association for the Blind Trust’ in Indian Bank on 20th October, 2015.  On December 4, 2015 NSS Unit 41, St. Teresa’s College, joined hands with the voluntary organization ‘Anbodu Kochi’ for collecting relief materials for the victims of Chennai disaster .

 On December 5, 2015 NSS Unit 41, joined hands with ‘Cultural Academy for Peace’, an NGO, to organize a seminar on ‘Inauguration of a series of workshops for the End of Violence Against Women’ and performed a skit on the theme of violence.  To welcome the new year with the aim of creating an alcohol free nation, the NCC Unit and the NSS Unit of St. Teresa’s College jointly arranged the welcome for the National level crew members of NCC as a part of the awareness programme on ‘’Don’t Drink and Drive and distributed brochures, on December 30, 2015.  On Janury 8th ,the NSS Unit did a community outreach programme.They conducted an AIDS awareness programme at SRVVHS School Ekm, and performed a street play on creating awareness regarding ‘AIDS’ in the school.  On February 3rd 2016, in collaboration with Caritas India, an NGO, the NSS Unit 41 of St. Teresa’s College participated in “ASAKIRANAM’’, a cancer awareness programme. The NSS volunteers participated in various competitions and enrolled as student volunteers for the cancer awareness campaign.

The Department of Economics, St. Teresa’s College, celebrated Digital India Week by organizing the following programmes in and around the college as part of Digital India, a project of Government of India aimed at transforming India into a digitally empowered society with digitally literate citizens.

 One day camp for opening Digi-lockers on June 30th 2015, which provided an opportunity

to staff and students of the college to open Digital lockers which are meant to keep various valuable documents like IDs, licenses, degrees, mark lists etc., digitally with

sufficient authentication by the concerned department/ organization/ University.  Debate on the topic “Digital India-Prospects and Problems” on 6th July 2015, shedding

light on matters such as creation of digital infrastructure, delivery of governance on

demand, and digital empowerment of citizens  A one day workshop “Towards Digital India through e-Jaalakam” a continuous programme

was organised by the e-jaalakam members as part of a digital inclusion programme for nearly 200 students of the college. The initiative was supported by Kerala State IT Mission

and Akshaya District Project Ernakulam.

5.1 Contribution of IQAC in enhancing awareness about Student Support Services

 At the beginning of the year, the IQAC Coordinator, Dr. Beena Job, conducted a 2 day Orientation Programme for the newly admitted students to familiarize them with the

college, its activities, infrastructure and learning resources and services offered to students, the various clubs and cells and student support programmes.

 Similarly at the end of the year, the final year students were given a Life Guidance

programme to equip them for life.

 The Public Address System and the Student Notice Board were used to inform students and give awareness about student support services such as Career Guidance Cell,

Placement Cell and Grievance Redressal Cell, services of a permanent Resident Counsellor, Gym facilities, Yoga classes, fee deduction, subsidised meals, free noon

meal facility, book banks in the departments, etc. as and when necessary.

 The Student Handbook and the College Website facilitated the dissemination of information regarding student support services such as hostel facilities including sports

hostel, free accommodation, scholarships, canteen etc.

 Class Teachers were directed to identify the outstanding students from the various classes of the first year UG batch (total - 30) to be mentored across three years by

internal faculty and external resource persons as part of the Walk With a Scholar

(WWS) Programme, a Govt. of Kerala initiative.

 Class Teachers were directed to identify the weak students from the various classes of

the first year UG batch (total - 30) to be mentored across one year by internal faculty

members as part of the Student Support Programme (SSP), a Govt. of Kerala initiative.

 IQAC instructed all teachers in charge of student welfare and activities to send in

reports on a monthly basis to ensure that remedial classes, mentoring and tutorial sessions are conducted regularly.

5.6 Details of student counselling and career guidance

The Counselling Cell seeks to help students deal effectively with stressful situations in life and provides a staunch support to students in need. Students are given professional assistance to help them cope with their problems/situations.

 The service of a permanent Resident Counsellor was available for regular counselling services that could reach out to all the students of the college.

 A half-day workshop was conducted for teachers on how to tackle the problems of students.

 Classes were taken for the students to orient them on “The Need for Counselling”, in order to erase the stigma associated with seeking counselling services,.

 General student counselling was done on a monthly basis for students of various classs.

 Altogether 48 students (33 from the Arts block and 15 students from the Science block) were given personal counselling and guidance during 2015-16. The Career Guidance Cell disseminates information about the availability of jobs, about centres of excellence in higher education and provides clear guidance about employment opportunities.

 Career Launcher IBPS Pamphlet was distributed twice in the year.

 The first interactive session was held by Mr. Eldo of IMS on various career opportunities. The sessions were held for 2nd DC students of Arts and Science block separately simultaneously after class at 2.15 p.m on 3 consecutive days from 9th -11th June 2015.

 On 17th June 2015 the Career Guidance cell of the college organized a one day orientation programme for all III DC students by Mr. Pranab M Das of the Indian Institute of Mind Power Training (IIMPT), Bangalore.

 On 25th June 2015, the Career Guidance Cell organized a talk by Smt. Sujatha Sunil Kumar, an International Education Marketing & Sales Management Professional, of the LEEDS University, UK for the final year students of both PG and UG (Arts and Science combined).

 On 25th November 2016 a class was organized for Economics and Commerce stream by the Indian Institute of Logistics.

5.8 Details of gender sensitization programmes

 An Orientation Programme was conducted for the newly admitted I UG students on 23 & 24 June ‘15 and there were several sessions relating to gender sensitisation across the two days. Dr. Smithi Sanel (Gynaecologist) and Mrs. Alice Mathew (Entrepreneur) were the resource persons for the sessions.

 Classes related to the theme of gender, rights of women and women empowerment were taken for students across the college by all the class teachers during the Value Education classes.

 A talk on ‘Cyber crime awareness’ was given at a programme under the support of UGC CPE Grant for seminars on 10 September 2015 by Mr.Francis Perrera, Retd. Inspector of Cyber Cell, Kochi.This was attended by students of various departments in science block and organized by the Dept. of Chemistry.

 The Women’s Study Centre conducted a seminar on ‘Cyber Crime’ by Mr. Venugopal, Assistant Commissioner of Police, and Mr. Francis Pereira, Sub Inspector, Cyber Cell on 13 July 2015.

 Four students of III B.A Economics worked on and presented a paper titled “e- Jaalakam : Evolution from a Micro Women Empowerment Project to a Wider Citizen Engagement Model in e Governance” in a National Seminar on E- Governance and Kerala Society :"Prospects and Challenges" organized by Post Graduate Department of Political Science, N.S.S Hindu College, Changanassery on 10 September 2015.

 The students of I MA Sociology worked on a documentary project on ‘Transgender Community’ for their course - Sociology of Media.

 Faculty member Linda Luiz took part in a discussion ‘Aanum pennum orumichirikkunnathine aarkkaanu pedi?’ (theme: gender segregation in campuses in Kerala) in ‘Niyanthranarekha’ programme aired on Manorama News Channel on 18 November 2015.

 Faculty member Elizabeth Abraham took part in the 3 km ‘Unity Run’ as part of the Grihalakshmi ‘Women’s Midnight Half Marathon’ held at Ernakulam on the night of 30-31 January 2016. The programme was envisaged for promoting women’s access to public spaces and symbolized the freedom of women.

 The MSc students of the Home Science department were engaged in a gender focused three month programme on ‘Anaemia among reproductive age women’.

 Talks and orientation programmes especially for the empowerment of women were organized in the college and by the departments. The Dept of Zoology conducted a departmental talk for all the students on “Poly Cystic Ovarian Disorder” By Dr. Lakshmi Rahul Lakshaman on 25th February 2016 and an Inter- departmental Orientation Talk for all I and II year students on “Women and Society” on 19 January 2016.

 On December 5, 2015, NSS Unit 41, joined hands with ‘Cultural Academy for Peace’, an NGO, to organize a seminar on ‘Inauguration of series of workshops for the End of Violence Against Women’. NSS volunteers performed a skit on the theme of violence.

 NSS Volunteers participated in a workshop -“Stree Suraksha”- Training for Women on Self Defence, organized by Kochi City Police on August 7, 2015 as part of their community policing venture.

 An awareness programme ‘Self-empowerment through Self-employment’was conducted by the IIPG FRM students of the Home Science department.

 A programme entitled ‘Empower Women, Empower Society’ was organised by the III DC students of the Home Science department.  A workshop on ‘Cyber Safety’ was conducted for nearly 300 students by an NGO ‘Bodhini’, a community services project initiative of Rotary Club of Cochin Metropolis on 25th November, 2015.  The members of the Women’s Cell of the college attended the inaugural programme of the UK supported Learning and Sharing Workshops in Kerala to help prevent and tackle Violence against women (VAW) on 5th of December, 2015 at St Teresa’s College.

6.3.2 . Teaching and Learning

 TRACC (Teresian Research and Consultancy Cell) is in place to promote the research activities of the institution.  The Teacher’s Handbook is checked by the HODs and the Principal to monitor and evaluate faculty members with regard to the teaching learning process, and necessary feedback given and action taken.  The IQAC kept track of content related talks and seminars conducted by and for the students.  Remedial, mentoring and tutorial classes were monitored through reports submitted periodically.  The IQAC conducted a student appraisal of teachers, and took a parent feedback to evaluate the teaching learning process at the institutional level and suggest measures for improvement.  The IQAC was helped by the Academic Deans of Arts, Science and Commerce who are appointed to look into academic matters of the three streams.  The IQAC conducted a Workshop on the theme of Mentoring to equip teachers to provide necessary assistance to students to acquire meaningful experiences for learning at the campus and to facilitate their holistic development and

progression.  Teachers were encouraged to use more modern and revolutionary methods that foster greater student interaction and enable the teacher to teach and also remain engaging such as power point presentations, field visits and applied extension activities.

6.3.3 Examination and Evaluation

 The IQAC monitored and periodically evaluated the activities of the Examination Cell to ensure the continuous and comprehensive evaluation of students and the timely conduct examinations.

 Some of the Examination/Valuation practices followed by M G University were reformed under the autonomous system and they were strictly adhered to.

 The Examination Manual was adhered to strictly, to ensure that quality was maintained throughout the process of examination and evaluation.

 A blue print for the question paper for each course was made to ensure that the teachers taught all the modules and the assessment of the students was based on all the modules.

 The exam schedule for the year was announced and displayed well in advance so that students would be adequately prepared.

 Sessional examination marks were scrutinised and displayed to assess learning outcome and identify areas and strategies for improvement.

 A Malpractice Prevention Cell functions effectively.

 To ensure a foolproof examination system, various committees were constituted

such as Exam Squad, Invigilation Committee, Question Paper Checking Committee and Result Publication Committee.

6.3.4 Research and Development

 The faculty members were encouraged to engage in activities that promote research and development. In its efforts to train, motivate and reward faculty, the institution encourages members to attend courses/conferences/workshops/seminars/training programmes, etc, and to be research –oriented. An award is given to the best research publication of the year.

 IQAC gives directions and monitors the activities of TRAAC to improve the quality of Research initiatives in the institution.

 It also disseminates information regarding various funds available for research and development.

 TRAAC (Teresian Research and Consultancy Cell) assesses the presentations of research scholars and monitors the PhD course work and sessionals conducted by the Research Centres.

6.3.5 Library, ICT and physical infrastructure / instrumentation

Library  The IQAC monitors the regular updating of library resources. The new comers, both staff and students were given an orientation on effective use of library resources. Ample support facilities are made available for the library.  Feedback was taken from students and staff and suggestions were put forward to improve library services.

Physical infrastructure / instrumentation  In order to meet the demands of autonomy and ensure adequate physical infrastructure,

a plot of land was bought with a view to building a new central block. This would also bridge the gap between the Arts and Science blocks, thereby redressing a long standing grievance.  All departments were checked to ensure that there was adequate software and computational facilities to meet the needs of a growing institution. Necessary equipments were bought including 6 Projectors & Accessories, 1 Desktop computer, 1 Printer, 6 Wireless routers, 65 MS office software, 3 Photocopiers, P.A Systems, Chairs and White Boards and an incinerator. Renovation of classrooms was done ie, electrical wiring with more tubes and fans provided.

6.3.6 Human Resource Management

 There are Staff Associations for the teaching and non-teaching staff, under the aegis of which cultural programmes, celebration of festivals, valedictory functions, annual staff picnic, etc., were conducted to build a family/community feeling and foster love for and loyalty to the institution.

 Orientation programmes were given to newly inducted staff.

 Training and development programmes were conducted for the up-gradation of skills

and abilities of the non-teaching and ministerial staff, to motivate them and equip them for enhanced performance.

 In its efforts to train, motivate and reward faculty, the institution encouraged members to attend courses/conferences/workshops/seminars/training programmes, etc, and to be research -oriented. As an incentive an award was given to the best research publication of the year.

 The Director was present at all the General Body meetings, Academic Council, Governing Council and IQAC meetings for the year.  The Provincial Manager visited the various departments, library and office and met with the teaching and non-teaching staff to listen to their achievements and grievances and to motivate them and convened a special meeting to address grievances of the faculty members.

 The recruitment, selection and hiring of teaching, non-teaching and ministerial staff was done in keeping with the norms of the UGC , M G University and the Government of Kerala.

 Faculty and staff recruitment is done strictly on merit basis and no donation/capitation fee is taken.

6.3.8 Industry Interaction / Collaboration

 Industry experts/representatives are invited to be members of all the Boards of Studies, of the Governing Council, Academic Council and the IQAC. Their guidance is sought and their suggestions are welcomed and often implemented.

 The Entrepreneurship Development Club is instrumental in motivating and developing entrepreneurship skills in the students. The ED club conducted skill enhancing workshops and arranged talks for the students by prominent entrepreneurs. ‘Women Entrepreneurship’ by Smt. Sheila Kochouseph Chittilappilly, the Managing Director of V-Star a prominent women entrepreneur and ‘Significance of Startup Villages in Kerala’ by Mr. Sijo Kurivila George the former CEO of startup village were two such talks. The students were shown how they could build up their own space in a competitive world

under the efficient guidance of experienced entrepreneurs.

 Internship programmes are part of the curriculum in several departments such as Home Science, Communicative English, Economics, etc.

 The admission procedure is planned and executed by the Admission Committee in keeping with the rules and regulations for autonomous institutions as stipulated by the UGC, M G University and the Government of Kerala, as outlined in the handbook and

6.9 What efforts are made by the University/ Autonomous College for Examination Reforms?

 The institution has adopted stringent quality directives and strategies to ensure that all the reforms/initiatives in the conduct of examinations brought about in the previous year (1st year of autonomy) were adhered to.  Every effort was made under autonomous scheme to ensure the credibility of

the examinations conducted and the promptness in publishing of results.  Accordingly committees were constituted to ensure integrity in the conduct of examinations- Examination Committee, Monitoring Committee, Malpractice Prevention Committee, etc.

6.10 What efforts are made by the University to promote autonomy in the affiliated/constituent colleges?

 The efforts and cooperation of the University led to the college being declared autonomous in June 2014.

 A new Autonomy Section was set up by the MG University to cater to the Autonomous colleges.

6.11 Activities and support from the Alumni Association  Upholding the Teresian spirit, alumnae members visited “Home of Faith” a rescue

home for children at to celebrate . The inmates were presented with gifts and their participation in the cultural programme made the occasion a memorable experience.

 The grand X-mas sale was conducted on 9-12-2015 with 74 stalls for textiles, 46 for home decor and 58 for food. There was active participation from the alumnae, staff, students and the public that made the event turn out to be a grand success.

 The alumnae committee had a meeting on 16th December to discuss the fund raising for the New Block and to select two representatives from each batch of UG and PG. The ASTA (Association of St. Teresa’s Alumni) committee also attended a meeting with the PTA of the college in this regard on 15th January at 2.30pm.

 Following the election of class representatives of various batches, ASTA organised a meeting for all the alumnae on the 7th of January 2016 at 2.30 pm. in the Arts Block Auditorium.

 On 6th of February 2015, the alumnae members attended the programme organised by Management and Staff of the college, in connection with the Founders day and

Smt. Suma Ravindran, Secretary felicitated the programme. There was sincere cooperation from the alumnae in charge of various committees for the successful conduct of the programme.

 The Alumnae committee met at 2.30pm on 15-2-2015 to discuss the maintenance of the Buggy Car- sponsored by St. Teresa’s College alumnae and staff to the South railway station in 2015 for the easy conveyance of the sick and physically challenged.

6.12 Activities and support from the Parent – Teacher Association

 Understanding the indispensible role of the parents as principal stakeholders under

the autonomous scheme, the office bearers to the Central Executive Committee of the PTA took up responsibilities in helping the effective functioning of the college.

 The PTA planned to introduce coaching classes for PSC, UPSC, Banking, SSC after the regular class hours for the final year and other interested students. They

also proposed the introduction of new value based courses which are relevant.

 They have planned to inaugurate a programme ‘Walk with a Legend’ in the next academic year 2016-17. In this programme each department is expected to honour a legend and a talk show is to be conducted which could benefit the students.

 The emerging need for infrastructure due to the increasing number of UG and PG programmes was the need of the hour. The PTA welcomed the Central Block Building project and decided to have a logo designing competition. The best logo was selected and the winner was given a prize sponsored by the PTA.

 The PTA conducted meetings with the executive members of the alumnae and briefed them about the plans for the building fund collection. They ensured maximum participation of the alumnae in the fund collection.

 The PTA took the initiative to launch the Central Block Building Project. They also organized a Benefactor’s Meet attended by faculty members, PTA members, alumni association (ASTA).

6.13 Development programmes for support staff

The support staff are given regular development programmes and training sessions for improved efficiency.

 A one day seminar on “Restructuring Consciousness: Transformational Principles for Optimising One’s True Potential” was organised by the IQAC on 6 Nov 2015 to help develop and support 21st century leadership, ethics and values, to improve thinking styles and develop confidence.

 A programme by Sadhgamaya on “Positive Thinking” was conducted on 27 Feb 2016 for the administrative staff. The programme was beneficial in giving the staff practical suggestions for stress management and improved efficiency in all

areas of life.

6.14 Initiatives taken by the institution to make the campus eco-friendly

The College has encouraged various clubs and cells to organise innovative programmes to make the campus eco-friendly. As a result many clubs and cells have come up with initiatives and programmes that have borne much fruit and proved effective. Special mention needs to be made of the Bhoomitra Sena (Nature) Club and the NSS.

 Bhoomithram Sanchi Project: The objective is to make the use of bhoomithrasanchis (cloth bags made from old clothes) a fashion among all the students of the college and school students in the district, thereby reducing the volume of non recyclable plastic waste being generated in Kochi city at present. Kudumbasree members were given training for stitching these bags and popularising its use among various segments of society such as students, residents associations etc. Seventeen training sessions were given both within and outside the college, covering five districts of Alleppey, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Trichur and Palakkad Awareness classes were conducted by the Bhoomitra Sena members in 10 higher secondary schools:

 Promoting Green Campus - Plastic-free Student Projects: The Economics department of St. Teresa’s college promotes the greening of the campus by encouraging students to submit plastic free dissertations. Instead of a plastic bound cover students use chart papers and other paper materials to cover their projects.

 Best of Waste: Teresian Week Competition: A unique attempt at incorporating environmental concerns into the Annual Teresian week competitions, was made in response to the request made by BMC club. One of the competitions was ‘Best of Waste’ where contestants had to design useful products from various waste articles given to them.

 The World Environment Day was celebrated by the NSS Unit in collaboration with BhoomitraSena on June 5, 2015. An intercollegiate training workshop on ecofriendly bag making was organized for NSS Volunteers. Fifty seven volunteers from 22 colleges attended the workshop.

 The NSS Unit of St Teresa's College created an awareness campaign for Energy conservation by designing a sticker which conveys the importance of energy conservation, encouraging people to switch off lights and fans after use. The volunteer secretaries pasted the sticker below the switchboards of every class and common rooms as well as all the departments on August 5, 2015.

 A cycle rally for environment protection, in association with Kurishingal Church, Ochanthuruth was conducted on 11th August 2015 The Portuguese cyclist, Jose Hernani Moraro Cardozo who is visiting several countries on his cycle interacted with the volunteers.

 NSS Volunteers visited Mitradam, an Institutional Partner of the International Society for the Promotion of Environment and Renewable Energy (ISPERE), on18th September 2015, in order to generate a purview of energy conservation in the context of utilizing solar energy.

 NSS Volunteers launched the initiative of ‘Organic Farming’, to promote pesticide free vegetables in the adopted village community of Ochanthuruthu, Vypin, Kerala, on Gandhi Jayanthi.

 Taking into stride the slogan ‘Clean India Green India’, the NSS Volunteers of St. Teresa’s College, embarked on a cleaning campaign of boat jetty, Kochi, Ernakulam, therby participating in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan of the Government of India. On 2nd October, 50 volunteers participated in the cleaning of the premises of boat jetty and also interacted with the local people, creating awareness of a plastic free zone.

7. Innovations and Best Practices

7.1 Innovations introduced during this academic year which have created a positive impact on the functioning of the institution. Give details.

 The implementation of the restructured syllabus and redesigned curriculum of the UG programmes. The syllabus of the existing 17 UG & 15 PG courses that were restructured and sent to the University for approval was implemented in 2015-16. The courses were meticulously designed with Graduate Attributes enumerated and Competencies defined to enable effective teaching-learning.

 Introduction of new programmes: The Syllabus of the following 9 new programmes that were proposed under the autonomy scheme in the previous year were designed and implemented - M. Sc. in Zoology, MTTM in Travel and Tourism Management, BMS in International Business, PG Diploma in Management in Business Analytics, B.Voc in Food Processing Technology and B.Voc in Software development, PG Diploma in Management in Business Analytics, PG Diploma in Fashion Designing and PG Diploma in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics.

 Plans to start new programmes: The Academic council has approved the syllabi of the following 9 new academic programmes during 2016-17:- M. Phil - Botany, English, Physics; PG - Mathematics, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Fashion Designing & Computer Applications; UG - B.Com with Capital market, a new batch of B.Com and BSc. Psychology.  Conduct of Knowledge Fair: St. Teresas’s College, in association with the Kerala State Higher Education Council and Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala, hosted ‘Knowledge Fair 2016’ on 22nd and 23rd January, 2016. The objective was to showcase the innovative abilities and inventions of Arts and Science Colleges. Talks by experts in diverse areas - Ayurveda, Geriatric Care, Corporate Management and Insurance were and presentations of innovations by students from various colleges. Cash prizes were given to the best innovations. There were stalls by various Research Centres, various Educational and Technological Companies, Publishing Houses and students of the college. Competitions were hosted by different departments.

Intimation of this event had been sent to the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in July, 2015 as a suggestion to usher innovation in the Higher Education sector. In this context we are happy to note that a Corpus Fund for innovation in institutions of Higher Education was set up by the Central Government in February, 2016.

7.2 Provide the Action Taken Report (ATR) based on the plan of action decided upon at the beginning of the year

A Transformative Teachers Workshop was conducted on 19th January, 2016 in the area of mentoring by BAANYAN TREE. The programme was designed, based on the detailed interaction sessions with the Faculty members and the material information shared by IQAC in order to equip teachers to provide necessary assistance to students to acquire meaningful experiences for learning and to facilitate their holistic development and progression. The workshop provided guidance on how to strengthen facilitating mechanisms like guidance cell, placement cell, grievance redressal cell, counselling cell and welfare measures to support students. In order to enhance the quality of the service provided by the staff a one day seminar was organized. The seminar on Restructuring Consciousness: Transformational Principles for Optimising One’s True Potential was conducted on 6th Nov 2015 for the Teaching and Non-Teaching staff to facilitate them to develop and support 21st century leadership, ethics and values and give the staff members the extra edge to function effectively in the present times especially in the context of autonomy. The plans to begin more innovative programmes under autonomous scheme bore fruit with the designing of the following new academic programmes and the syllabi of these programmes were submitted to the University for approval of which the first 3 were implemented this year. B. Voc Programme in Software Development B. Voc Programme in Food Processing Technology Diploma course in Health Care Assistance (under the scheme of Community College) M. Phil. Programme in English, Physics and Botany P.G. Programmes in Mathematics, Fashion Designing, Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics B. Com (Additional Batch) with specialization in Capital Market B. Sc. Psychology In this regard a proposal was submitted for assistance under the Kaushal Kendra scheme The plans to strengthen the Green initiatives of the college and build environmental consciousness were carried out. Taking the green auditing report as a base line for the action plan to be evolved till the next environment audit, the findings and recommendations of the audit committee had been forwarded to the management. On the request of the IQAC an environmental policy is formulated by the management of the college. The services of the Bhoomitra Sena Club were invited to carry out the follow up and ensure that the suggestions of the audit committee were implemented. A decision was taken to incorporate the EVS syllabus designed and proposed by the UGC into the curriculum in 2016-17 for all the UG programmes. and necessary steps were taken to ensure the same.

Plans to devise a strategy to promote research and consultancy were implemented with the setting up of the R&D Department. A Research and Development Department for St. Teresa’s College, was inaugurated on 7th December 2015 aimed at initiating high quality research for the promotion of innovative thinking and for the development of the society in general. The R&D department was entrusted with bringing out the guidelines and rules handbook which included detailed job profiles of all employers/designated personnel of the institution and the staff members of the various departments and the administrative staff, outlining their duties and responsibilities. The IQAC took the initiative to conduct an academic audit. Accordingly an audit committee was formed and a format for the evaluative report along with the guidelines for the Academic Audit was prepared and distributed to carry out the internal and external audits. With the intention of streamlining the efforts to keep track of the progression of students, a Report Card and Student Profile booklet was designed and given to class teachers to include all important data regarding the students such as personal details, academic progress, extracurricular activities, health profile, and placement. A more effective mechanism was worked out to evaluate the extent and degree of success in the utilization of autonomy. Accordingly an evaluative report was prepared and submitted by the IQAC to the Principal.

1. Teresian Rural Outreach Programme (TROP) implemented in St.Teresa’s college reaches out to people in rural areas and extends a helping hand to the needy. The students are given hands on experience in imparting life skills.

2. Fostering Art and Creativity for Lifelong Engagement: St. Teresa’s College strives for the overall development of the students. Apart from academics, due care is given to foster the artistic talents of the students. The college encourages co-curricular activities of the students by giving free training and providing platforms to showcase their skills. Their artistic and literary talents are encouraged and their leadership and organisational skills are honed by the constant support of the management and staff. The effectiveness of this practice has been proven in the Mahatma Gandhi Youth festival with the College winning the overall championship consecutively for the fifth time.

7.4 Contribution to environmental awareness / protection

1. Solid Waste Management

The faculty in-charge of BhoomitraSena club is conducting a research on “Role of the Local Governments in Solid, Liquid Waste Management and Environment Protection-A Study of Panchayats in Kerala”. As part of the research, waste audits were conducted in the following Panchayats. Chemical analysis of water quality was also done in sample water bodies since the first sign of environment stress will be reflected in the water quality A). Nenmeni Panchayat, Wayanad B). Marutharod Panchayat, Palakkad C). Ezhikkara Panchayat, Ernakulam D). Kanjiramkulam Panchayat,Thiruvananthapuram

2. “Ezhazhakilekku Ezhikkara” The project aims at encouraging households in Ezhikkara Panchayat in Ernakulam district to implement segregation of solid waste and hand over plastic waste for recycling and safe disposal in the place of the practice of burning it, throwing it in soil or disposing

into the nearby backwaters. The project which was started last year among 400 households in Ward 7 of Ezhikkara Panchayat was extended towards around 390 households in Ward 10. BMC members conducted several awareness classes as a part of this project, and consequently plastic waste is being segregated by households, collected by Kudumbasree members and handed over to CREDAI Clean City Movement (CCCM) for recycling.

3. e-Waste - Awareness and Collection Program th On 9 February 2016, BhoomitraSena club in association with NSS unit of St. Teresa’s college organized an awareness programme on the health hazards caused due to E-waste. On 11th February BMC and NSS unit of the college joined hands together with the Cochin Corporation, collected e-waste from the college and handed it over to the Cochin Corporation.

4. Voicing concern against ineffective waste management On February 8th, 2016, NSS Unit 41 joined hands with the NGO Janaseva Sisubhavan, to launch a campaign against pollution of the environment and promoting waste management. Actor Sheela and JanasevaShisubhavan joined St. Teresas college students to launch a stand-in strike in Kochi against the inability of authorities to implement an

effective waste management plan.

5. Joining the Swachh Bharat Mission This is a national campaign by the Government of India, covering 4041 statutory towns, to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country. Taking up the slogan ‘Clean India Green India’, the NSS Volunteers of St. Teresa’s College, embarked on a cleaning campaign of boat jetty, Kochi. Fifty volunteers participated in cleaning the premises of boat jetty and also interacted with the local people, creating awareness about a plastic free zone.

6. Organic Farming Initiatives NSS Volunteers of St. Teresa’s College, imbibed the spirit of organic farming, and

launched the initiative of organic farming on Gandhi Jayanthi, to promote pesticide free vegetables in the adopted village community of Ochanthuruthu, Vypin, Kerala. A small plot of land inside the premises of Kurishinkal church was selected for the purpose, and the volunteers enthusiastically ventured on vegetable cultivation. The venture is continuously managed and monitored by the selected NSS Volunteers, especially who are coming from the area. The NSS Volunteers participated in a Rally to promote organic farming during a seminar at ‘Annam 2015’, the National Food and Agro Biodiversity Festival. They put forward slogans which promoted the practice of organic farming. The rally started from Marine Drive and ended at the Rajeev Gandhi Maidan.
