LIVERPOOL: ADAM HOLDEN, 48, CHURCH STREET. 1875. ' LIVERPOOL 1 T. BRAKKLL, PRINTER, COOK STREET. The editing of this Volume was commenced by the Honorary Secretary, in the Autumn'of 1875: but a presure of printing work, throughout most of the winter, interfered with its completion. The late President, who took it up about the close of the third Paper, is responsible for the remainder. Volume XXVIII, for the Session recently closed, will follow in rapid succession ; and thus the regularity of the issue of the Volumes will be restored. THE ILLUSTRATIONS. No. IX has been presented by Dr. Kendrick; and No XI by i Canon Hume. The Wood Blocks of II and III were engraved for the Society; X was lent by Dr. Kendrick ; and VIII by Mr. Axon. Mr. Abram kindly allowed the Society to print off the requisite number of copies of No. IV, from his wood cut prepaid for another purpose. Date: . 3 THESIS ABSTRACT Adrian Henri and the Merseybeat movement: performance, poetry, and public in the Liverpool scene of the 1960s The thesis focuses on the Merseybeat movement and its manifestations in Liverpool in the 1960s, with particular emphasis on the work of Adrian Henri. The Merseybeat movement – centred upon Adrian Henri, Roger McGough, and Brian Patten – was a site-specific confluence of the alternative avant-garde and the British populist tradition of art, and deserves exploration as both a literary and a cultural phenomenon. The thesis argues that the dismissal of Merseybeat as ‘pop poetry’ has come from using the wrong critical tools: it is better viewed as a ‘total art’ movement, encompassing not only poetry but also visual art, music, comedy, happenings, and other forms of artistic expression. The thesis is primarily concerned with the performative and collaborative aspects of Merseybeat. As well as considering this particular movement in terms of oral performance and audience communication, this research also contributes to our understanding of the dissemination of this poetry – particularly how its audiences experienced live poetry alongside other artforms and media.

    LIVERPOOL DEVELOPMENT UPDATE October 2019 Welcome Welcome to the Autumn 2019 edition of the Liverpool Development Update. Our city is going through a period of exciting and rapid change. This is in large part fuelled by the £1bn a year investment drive which began in 2015 and looks set to continue through 2020. As a result we are seeing new homes; leisure, health and education facilities; as well as a mixture of offices/industrial and commercial space all creating new jobs to support this city’s growing economy and rising population. Since the Spring Development Update, much has happened in the city to accelerate the drive toward cleaner air for all and for a reduction in carbon emission to net zero by 2030. These are issues that could have a positive impact on developments across the city and we will look to highlight areas of best practice in future issues. Every scheme has its challenges, but as we develop our economy we have become more aware of the effect we have on the planet. FRONT COVER: Having recently declared a Climate Change Emergency we will be developing a strategy designed to reduce the impact of the city’s regeneration programme, as well as advance measures to develop a 1 low carbon economy. The decade ahead is going to shape the rest of this century in how we tackle climate change – and the only real way to 2 3 achieve that is for everyone to play their part. 1.     THE SUCCESSFUL PRESERVATION OF ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC SITES: PAUL McCARTNEY’S CHILDHOOD HOME IN LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND AND THE CHESS RECORDS OFFICE AND STUDIO IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Kandalyn Lu Hahn January 2005 © 2005 Kandalyn Lu Hahn ABSTRACT Groundbreaking preservation efforts for two highly significant rock and roll music sites are examined: Paul McCartney’s childhood home in Liverpool, England, under the protection of the National Trust, and the former Chess Records office and studio in Chicago, Illinois, landmarked under city ordinance. Mid to late twentieth-century popular music sites face multiple threats of demolition, neglect, and inappropriate treatment. The lack of architectural distinction, bias against relatively recent history, and need to establish the relevance of popular culture inhibit successful preservation of rock and roll sites. Yet popular interest in such sites has exploded since the 1990s and visitation is on the rise. Increasing interest in these locations translates into more opportunities for funding and support. At the same time, it intensifies the need for preservation as popularity attracts exploitation schemes that threaten the integrity of the sites. Finally, given the difficulty of finding accurate documentation of these sites, the critical time to work on their preservation is while people who know their history firsthand are still alive. The examination includes a review of the literature, much of it in popular media, and primary research in the form of site visitation; interviews with key people and related experts; collection of original documentation; and some observation of work in progress.

By means of a comparative historical investigation of youth culture and popular music in Liverpool and Newcastle upon Tyne, the work engages with existing debate among historians surrounding the nature and extent of cultural change for the period usually referred to as „The Sixties‟, and whether or not it is possible to speak of a „Cultural Revolution‟. Spanning the years between the initial impact of rock „n‟ roll and the immediate aftermath of the Beat Boom of 1963-64, a phenomenon described by one commentator as representing „perhaps the North‟s greatest single cultural „putsch‟‟, the thesis examines the role of urban and regional identity in the process of cultural production, reproduction, and consumption. Theoretical insights derived from the associated disciplines of sociology and cultural studies are employed which offer an opportunity for a novel and dynamic analysis and interpretation of the empirical historical evidence.
