In particolare, desiderava lavorare con Lubitsch e Erich von Stroheim. Nel 1933, Luis B. Mayer considerò la possibilità di chiedere Lubitsch alla Paramount per dirigere La Regina Cristina , e la risposta della Garbo, via telegramma datato 1° Aprile, fu: “ Adoro Lubitsch . Va bene anche [Edmund] Goulding”. Ma Lubitsch era troppo impegnato nella preparazione di Partita a quattro , le cui riprese sarebbero iniziate nella prima metà di luglio. Introduction: Egoism—Still Interesting After All These Years Egoism is a relatively neglected ethical theory in contemporary moral philosophy. Despite the fact that two of the greatest modern philosophers, Thomas Hobbes and Friedrich Nietzsche—along with other more recent philosophers—have advanced egoism in a philosophically sophisticated way, egoism is usually just briefly presented as that which ethics is meant to overcome, or simply dismissed as not worth discussing. This is, however, by no means the case in the behavioral and social sciences. The notion that human beings in particular (and animals generally) are essentially self-interested creatures informs most of economics, and much of psychology, history, political science, and sociobiology. Sociology alone seems to share the contemporary philosophic dismissal of egoism. Moreover, egoism is often explored in motion pictures. In this series of three articles, I want to look at some of the ways egoism is portrayed in some classic pieces of cinema. Egoistic characters are in fact quite commonly shown in movies, including in a lot of mediocre ones. However, I have chosen films that are considered by film critics to be among the finest films ever produced, and ones in which the egoism of one or more of the leading characters is an essential part of the structure of the film. I will try to show how these films explore and implicitly evaluate or critique egoism. In this first article, I will look at two classic war films in which egoism is portrayed benignly.1 In the next article, I will examine a pair of movies in which egoism is given a more malign face.

Oder: Ein kleines Kapitel Kinogeschichte als Beziehungsgeschichte Vorüberlegungen Es gibt Plots (oder fabulas), die man ,urtümlich‘ nennen kann, weil das ihnen zugrundeliegende Verhaltensmuster anscheinend mit der Ins- tinktstruktur des Menschen korrespondiert und deshalb weitgehend un- abhängig von einer konkreten Kultur bzw. vom Grad der Vertrautheit mit ihr (die man gemeinhin ,Bildung‘ nennt) verstehbar ist. Etwa der- art: Ein Eindringling stört das Zusammenleben einer Gruppe. Oder: Ein Männchen tritt mit einem anderen in Konkurrenz um ein Weibchen. Die kulturelle Prägung findet sich in den Aspekten, die aus der Grundkons- tellation eine konkrete Geschichte machen, wenn z. B. die Sympathien auf die Akteure verteilt und Lösungen angeboten werden. Weil – so darf man annehmen – der junge Graf Almaviva, der in Rossinis Oper Il barbiere di Sevilla (1816) dem alten Dr. Bartolo sein Mündel Rosina abjagt, ein sym- pathischer Mann ist, sind die Zuschauer damit einverstanden und freuen sich mit ihm, dass er aus der Konkurrenz der Männchen (jung vs. alt) um das Weibchen (jung) als Sieger hervorgeht. Geschichten wie diese sind geeignet, Sympathien zu lenken und Solidarisierungen zu bewirken. Wegen der Allgemeinverständlichkeit des Konflikts sind solche urtümlichen Konstellationen gern verwendete Stoffe für populäre Genres wie etwa die Oper (im 19. Jahrhundert) oder den Film (im 20. Jahrhundert). Ob eine Geschichte Zuschauer, die sich eigentlich an anderen Werten orientieren, durch eine geschickte Konstruktion des Plots und Sympathiezuweisung zu Verhaltensänderungen bewegen 311 Norbert Franz (d. h. letztlich manipulieren) kann, oder ob vorhandene Stimmungen lediglich verstärkt werden können, ist umstritten – deutlich aber ist, dass die Mächtigen dies fürchten und deshalb mit Zensur1 reagieren.

    SHAKESPEARE ON FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by Zoran Sinobad January 2012 Introduction This is an annotated guide to moving image materials related to the life and works of William Shakespeare in the collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. While the guide encompasses a wide variety of items spanning the history of film, TV and video, it does not attempt to list every reference to Shakespeare or every quote from his plays and sonnets which have over the years appeared in hundreds (if not thousands) of motion pictures and TV shows. For titles with only a marginal connection to the Bard or one of his works, the decision what to include and what to leave out was often difficult, even when based on their inclusion or omission from other reference works on the subject (see below). For example, listing every film about ill-fated lovers separated by feuding families or other outside forces, a narrative which can arguably always be traced back to Romeo and Juliet, would be a massive undertaking on its own and as such is outside of the present guide's scope and purpose. Consequently, if looking for a cinematic spin-off, derivative, plot borrowing or a simple citation, and not finding it in the guide, users are advised to contact the Moving Image Reference staff for additional information.     Peter Lorre season at BFI Southbank Season marks the fiftieth anniversary of Lorre’s death and will include screenings of 22 films including M, Mad Love, Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon Monday 28 July 2014, London BFI Southbank today announces a season dedicated to one of the most nuanced and complex actors of his generation Peter Lorre. Marking the fiftieth anniversary of his death, this five week retrospective from Tuesday 2 September – Tuesday 7 October will feature some of Lorre’s most celebrated roles. Lorre was famed for playing sinister characters and even holds the prestigious position of being the first actor to ever portray a Bond villain, when he played Le Chiffre in a 1954 television adaptation of Casino Royale. The season will showcase a number of Lorre’s villainous screen moments such as The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) and Crime and Punishment (1935), as well as his roles in some of the most iconic films of the golden age of Hollywood including Casablanca (1942) and The Maltese Falcon (1941). The centrepiece of the season will be the film which made Lorre a star, Fritz Lang’s psychological thriller M (1931), re-released by the BFI in cinemas across the UK on September 5. Born László Loewenstein in the small Austro-Hungarian town of Rószahegy (now in present day Slovakia), Lorre won critical acclaim for his theatre work with Bertolt Brecht and international fame beckoned after his first major film role as a compulsive child murderer in M. Made two years before Hitler came to power Lang’s film was renowned for its striking imagery and inventive use of sound; playing on extended run at BFI Southbank this re-release can now be enjoyed in a pin-sharp restoration.

    HIST/HRS 169 – Summary 2A Spring 2018 Hollywood and Censorship 1920-30: The Ghost of Fatty Arbuckle Middle class reform movements were very powerful in the early 20th century. Progressives, middle classes, women and preachers pushed hard for Prohibition, women’s suffrage, and the censorship of the Hollywood product that some were convinced was undercutting the moral standards of America’s youth. Church groups were also very active, especially beginning in the 1920s. By about 1930 Catholic groups were the most powerful: they watched films carefully for potential insults to the Catholic Church and to immigrant Catholic groups and for dangers to the moral purity of Catholic youth. In the early 30s Catholic leaders organized ‘Legions of Decency’, whose job was to arrange boycotts of Hollywood movies that Catholic leaders considered objectionable. American public opinion around 1920 was fascinated with Hollywood society that had, according to Robert Sklar, entered the ‘Aquarian Age’ (free-thinking, self-indulgent, sybaritic). Ordinary people followed their favorite stars – their personae, lifestyles and values -- in fan magazines and in the writings of gossip columnists. Despite the efforts of the studios to keep their stars’ image wholesome and family compatible, public opinion’s Magazine Cover, 1920 image was that Hollywood represented physical beauty, sensual self indulgence through drinking, drugs, sex, swimming, driving fast sports cars, living in palatial mansions and going to wild weekend parties. Anxieties were heightened by the migration of large numbers of “movie struck girls” to Hollywood to make fame and fortune; many of them were of course exploited by the system (by “leering foreigners with big noses and small ratty eyes” [Who are they?]), and according to popular legend, destroyed in the process.
