MISSION STATEMENT The Arts & Science Center for Southeast serves as a cultural crossroad: engaging, educating, and entertaining through the arts and sciences.

VISION STATEMENT Changing lives through creativity. LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Well, what can I say, but state the obvious…2020 did not turn out as we planned. No one was prepared for the immense uncertainty caused by a global pandemic. Museums and cultural institutions across the United States were hit hard by state- mandated closures and operating restrictions, resulting in loss of revenue from cancelled events, and a significant decrease in memberships and donations. The Arts & Science Center endured the national health crisis alongside our neighbors, community, and fellow museums and cultural organizations.

Fortunately, ASC had the advantage of a well-established STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, ART & Math) foundation. When we closed to the public on March 13, 2020, staff quickly transitioned to providing virtual programming. A lot of the equipment needed to adapt our programs and activities to virtual platforms we already had in-house for use in our after-school programs and summer camps. The ASC education team crafted diverse activity videos shared on our website and social media platforms. Many of the virtual programs included free take & make activity supply bags available for pick-up at the museum or delivered to ASC community partner organizations.

ASC’s Digital Media Specialist and Curator created 3D virtual reality exhibitions of all our 2020 in- person exhibitions, accompanied by live-streamed interviews with featured artists. Although in-person live music is always preferred, utilizing virtual platforms allowed for ASC staff and the musicians to collaborate on producing a more curated experience for the Live@5 audience. We also hosted our first virtual theatre production, Clue: At Home Version.

We went retro with our fundraising endeavors in 2020. The virtual Heart for Curator the Arts telethon, a two- evening variety show complete with live M.C.s and Chaney Jewell phone bank, generated much-needed funds. Most importantly, it provided an opportunity for past and present ASC volunteers, hailing from across Theatre Education Arkansas and the U.S., to participate in an event and show their support for Coordinator the museum they love. The concept was so well received, its being referred to Lindsey Collins as our “inaugural” virtual telethon. Digital Media Throughout the year, our successful adaptation of programs and progress on Specialist The ARTSpace on Main and The ARTworks on Main were frequently featured Ashley Smith in newspaper articles, radio and television news programs, and shared on social media. Administrative Coordinator The Arts & Science Center’s ability to navigate the unforeseen events of 2020 Cynthia Gaddy would not have been possible without the dedicated support of our members, donors, visitors, and community. What ASC was able to accomplish in Public Programs 2020 serves as a solid testament to your investment (dollars and time) in the Coordinator museum. In spite of everything, we ended the year strong. Shakeelah Rahmaan

There are better things to come in 2021, especially at the Arts & Science Development Assistant Center. Our ARTx3 community campus – the museum, The ARTSpace, and Shannon Frazeur The ARTworks – will offer fun and diverse opportunities for our members and visitors to engage in the arts. We cannot wait to share the progress with you. Visitor Relations Coordinator With gratitude, Matthew Howard

Dr. Rachel Miller Letter from the 2020 Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees The year 2020 began with great promise and excitement for The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas. The Center had planned our program expansion for the children’s theater production, and the summer musical and summer camps. In addition, construction of The ARTSpace on Main and The ARTworks on Main buildings was on target to break ground. Hosting our biennial fundraising gala in The ARTSpace surely would have yielded record attendance and donations. We were prepared to meet all challenges to make this happen and have the best year ever!

However, mid-March brought 2020 BOARD OF TRUSTEES word of the coronavirus pandemic and many of our Chair — Sandra Fisher well-laid plans were put on Vice-Chair — Tracy Sutherland pause. It ushered in the use of Treasurer — Jodie Jolly new vocabulary/phrases and Secretary — Shalisha Thomas tested our resolve. We had to figure out how the Center At-Large — Dr. Angela Andrade would remain relevant, At-Large — Barbara Warren accessible and safe, while keeping the staff employed. Tom Bennett, Lazenie Collins, Troy DeBill, So, we “Zoomed” meetings and gatherings, remained “socially distanced,” Linda Lewis Eubank, Jill Healy, Dr. Jerry Ingram, constantly “sanitized” and “mask produced” ourselves James Andrew Mincy, Rev. Edna Morgan, into a “new normal.” Jestin Thomas, Dr. Ryan Watley, and Pia Woods

Virtual Family FunDay activities, Meet the Curator events and Live@Five from your home became part ASC Endowment Fund, Inc. of our landscape due to the creative talents of the Chair — Charlotte England ASC staff, Dr. Miller, a supportive Board of Trustees Vice-Chair — Julie Bridgforth and the community at large. We even hosted our first two-day Heart for the Arts Telethon in place of our Treasurer — Annette Kline biennial gala fundraiser. The ARTSpace held the art Secretary — Becky Simpson auction items and allowed the public a glimpse of the new facility. Troy DeBill, Dr. David Rainey, and Freddye Petett

We exemplified what is possible when we lean into our strengths and talents in cooperation with one ART KREWE BOARD another. We provided an outlet and safe space for President — Jill Healy many who felt the disruption of their lives this year. Vice President — Marjie Hart The Arts are a necessary, stabilizing part of our Reception Coordinator — Ann Smith community, our society and our humanity. Secretary — Mary Lee Hall Many of us ended the year a bit exhausted, longing Parliamentarian — Mary Shannon Fikes to have in-person contact with friends and family, heartbroken at the loss of loved ones and thankful We thank ArtKrewe for the exquisite receptions at to be healthy and strong. So, we say goodbye to The Arts & Science Center’s openings of art exhibitions and 2020 and welcome the possibilities of 2021. I am theatrical performances. proud and grateful to be part of an organization that continues to live up to its Vision and Mission: changing lives through creativity by engaging, educating and entertaining through the arts and sciences.
