The small town of Big Timber, located at the confluence of the Boulder and Yellowstone Rivers, is 29 miles to the west. Columbus is 12 miles to the east at the confluence of the Stillwater and Yellowstone rivers. The Billings Logan International Airport is a 60-mile drive east of the ranch and is the second most active airport in Montana. Its airlines include Allegiant, Delta/Delta Connection, Alaska/Horizon, Cape Air, and United/United Express with daily non-stop service to many US and Montana cities. Edwards Jet Center is a high-quality FBO that handles private aircraft. The Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is a 90-mile drive west of the ranch. It is the busiest passenger airport in Montana and sixth busiest in the Pacific Northwest, serving the Greater Yellowstone region. Five airlines offer numerous daily flights. The Yellowstone River begins its journey in Yellowstone National Park and continues through Montana almost to the North Dakota border, where it confluences with the Missouri River. The Yellowstone Valley contains some of Montana’s most productive agricultural land along its entire length. The Yellowstone River is the longest undammed river in the lower 48 states and is as untamed as it was when Captain William Clark headed downstream over 200 years ago. The ranch’s location in the valley places it between two significant tributaries of the Yellowstone, the Boulder and Stillwater rivers, which originate in the Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains and flow north to join the Yellowstone. The snow-capped Beartooths and Absarokas lie to the south and the Crazy Mountains to the west. The nearest town is the tiny community of Reed Point, which lies on the Banks of the Yellowstone River and is the home of the Great Montana Sheep Drive each Labor Day weekend. Columbus is 12 miles to the east and is a full-service community with a population of approximately 1,900. Columbus serves as a gateway to Yellowstone National Park, the Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains, and the Beartooth Highway, which is one of the most scenic routes in Montana. Big Timber is on the south side of the river 29 miles west of the ranch. Big Timber is a small agricultural town with a variety of overtones related to fishing, hunting, and outdoor recreation that has attracted absentee owners. The owner estimated at 200 pair grazing capacity and 160 pairs on a year-round basis, the ranch provides a rare opportunity for livestock producers looking in this area at this price point. A ranch access exit off Interstate 90 leads to the north end of the property, where the calving barn, corrals, and working facilities are conveniently located. From there the ranch spans approximately three miles south and four miles west along the Schoolhouse Creek drainage. The topography is primarily rolling with a variety of open grassland, dryland hay or improved pasture, and timbered coulees and draws. From the hilltops the views are expansive and dramatic with the craggy peaks of the Absaroka-Beartooth mountain ranges to the south and the rugged Crazy Mountains to the west. There is a well at the barn that services four stock tanks in the corrals. Additional wells, pipelines, and stock tanks are developed throughout the ranch. There are no residential structures. A new owner could select from numerous sites that have power nearby and offer outstanding views of the surrounding mountains. GENERAL OPERATIONS This part of south-central Montana was initially settled by homesteaders of Norwegian descent in the late 1800s. They came with farming in mind, but those who stayed soon adapted to utilize the native rangelands for sheep grazing. Today, raising cattle has become the business of choice for the mixed prairie grass ranges of the area. The current owner runs approximately 240 cow-calf pairs for seven months. Under the current management plan, there is no hay produced on the ranch. The owner rates the ranch at 160 head year-round if hay is produced on the ranch. There are approximately 300± acres that have historically been hayed, and the owner has elected to hay some of these fields in the past. Two of those fields were recently seeded in 2016 to a grass mix, and one of those fields is a grass/alfalfa mix. © 2020 HALL AND HALL | WWW.HALLANDHALL.COM | [email protected] — 8 — WATER RESOURCES The ranch has extensive stock water development in addition to Schoolhouse Creek and a man- made pond that distribute livestock and support resident wildlife. There are approximately eleven drilled wells, four of which are powered by generators, and eight springs on the ranch. One well has a pipeline that feeds a storage tank. The spring-fed pond is in a very picturesque location, flanked by a timbered ridge and is an attractive spot for elk and other wildlife. Crazy Mountains View Ranch is home to an array of wildlife.     CRAZY MOUNTAINS EMU (Hunting Districts 315 and 580) Description: This 1,708-square-mile EMU includes the Crazy Mountain Range and adjacent foothill and prairie habitats in south central Montana. The area is a mixture of private (78%) and public (22%) lands, including portions of both the Gallatin and Lewis and Clark national forests (16%), state school trust lands (DNRC – 5%), and USDI Bureau of Land Management (BLM – 0.2%). Land ownership patterns within the boundary of the national forests are characterized by checkerboard ownership. The EMU contains two roadless areas encompassing 149,467 acres of public and private lands that offer wilderness-type recreation. However, much of this roadless area is not elk habitat. This EMU contains over 590,000 acres of occupied elk habitat (54% of EMU). National forest lands provide a large portion of spring, summer and fall elk habitat, but private lands in mountain foothill and sagebrush-grassland habitats provide over 80% of elk winter range during normal winters and virtually all of the available winter range during severe winters. Public Access: Access by road to elk habitat is limited in most of HD 580 where the checkerboard pattern of land ownership complicates management of access. With few exceptions, public access to elk habitat on the north and east slopes of the Crazies is controlled entirely by private landowners. There are only 3 points in HD 580 where the public may legally access national forest lands – the Big Timber Canyon road in the southeast corner, the Cottonwood Creek/Forest Lake road on the north end and Sixteenmile Creek in the northwest corner of the hunting district.

ARCHEAN HISTORY OF THE QUAD CREEK AREA By F. DONAU) ECKELMANN AND ARIE POUDEEVAART ABSTRACT The Beartooth Mountains form an elongated range with longer axis trending north- west and consist of a core of granitic gneiss flanked by migmatites and metasediments. The Quad Creek area is astride the northeast boundary of granitic gneiss and migma- tites and metasediments. The area is 7 square miles in extent and is occupied by a large syncline with axis striking north-northeast and plunging 10°-30°S.-SW. Detailed field studies indicate the following geologic history. (1) Original deposition of an Archean sedimentary sequence. (2) Emplacement of metagabbro and ultramafic intrusions, followed by folding; fold axes strike north-northeast. (3) Regional metamor- phism and granitization, resulting in a core of granitic gneiss and mantle of migmatites and metasediments with boundaries trending northwest. The last expression of graniti- zation was the production of pegmatites; a few metanorite intrusions were emplaced before pegmatite formation. (4) Emplacement of a metabasaltic dike swarm, younger than the pegmatites but probably within the same plutonic cycle, and striking mainly northwest. (5) Emplacement of a younger Precambrian dolerite dike swarm which has the same dominant strike as the older dike swarm. (6) Peneplanation and deposition of Paleozoic sediments. (7) Laramide uplift and thrusting, and emplacement of felsic porphyries early in this cycle. Laramide structures are controlled by basement structures. The dominant northwest trend was established in the Archean cycle of regional meta- morphism and granitization, yet the direction of the oldest foldings is unique.

    Land use and landscape evolution in the West : a case study of Red Lodge, Montana, 1884-1995 by Meredith Nelson Wiltsie A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Earth Sciences Montana State University © Copyright by Meredith Nelson Wiltsie (1998) Abstract: During the last 100 years, Red Lodge, Montana has evolved from a tiny prospectors’ camp into a substantial mining community and finally into a center for amenity-based recreational tourism and rural in migration. This process has been tangibly . preserved on the landscape and, in essence, exemplifies a case study in the evolution of capitalism. Indeed, Red Lodge owes its origins to the industrial era of productive capitalism and has evolved into an economy based on a postindustrial era of consumption capitalism. This study reconstructs changes in land use and landscape in the Red Lodge area through these eras and interprets how these changes illustrate broader processes of deindustrialization and the changing nature of capitalism in the American West. This research also identifies how local citizens’ own sense of place has both shaped and been shaped by these broader economic and cultural shifts. As a case study, Red Lodge is representative of a shift in land use and landscape occurring in many mountainous communities in the nonmetropolitan West.
