We encourage all long-term care residents to make a wish and place it in Copernicus’s Wishing Well in the hope that their wish will come true! Family members, staff and volunteers may also make a wish on behalf of a long-term care resident. The first wish to be realized was that of resident Ela Krolikowska. She wanted to go to the Shrine Circus. In her youth, Ela was a member of the circus with her husband. She had knives thrown at her by her husband (at the circus, not at home); performed with horses and a lasso; and was a trapeze artist. Ela also designed Copernicus Lodge Family Council President and sewed costumes for herself and the other performers. Richard Gralek & his children at the ceremony In 2013, the Family Councils’ Program announced the launch of its Outstanding Family Council Member of the Year Award. The award recognizes the outstanding contributions of one Family Council member in Ontario. A Family Council is composed of family and friends of long-term care residents. Its purpose is to improve residents’ quality of life and to give families and friends a forum for sharing their experiences and exchanging information, as well as providing suggestions to management. The Copernicus Lodge Family Council was formed in 2010 and meets quarterly. The inaugural Outstanding Family Council Member Award was presented to our very own Richard Gralek, Copernicus Lodge Family Council President, for his efforts to engage long-term care residents’ family members. By fostering an environment of positivity and cooperation, which facilitated the addition of several new council members, Richard is the driving force behind family and friends of our residents becoming more active stakeholders at Copernicus Lodge. Under his leadership, the Copernicus Lodge Family Council has become a vibrant forum for discussions on issues that will improve our residents’ quality of life. Congratulations, Richard! You and your work are a credit to Copernicus Lodge.

Her wish was granted in July 2013. Ela Krolikowska attended a show at the Shrine Circus in Oakville with Copernicus Lodge Assistant Director of Care, Ela Chabelska. Together, they experienced magic, fire, elephants and lions and enjoyed the smorgasbord of carnival food such as cotton candy, popcorn and snow cones. After her visit to the circus, Ela’s comments were: “This event reminded me of my past life. I remember visiting many countries during my circus days and enjoying it.” “I had the best time.” “I could have made better outfits for the performers. Their outfits did not have enough sparkle.” Program „Studnia Życzeń” (Wishing Well Program) pobudza mieszkańców, członków rodziny, pracowników i wolontariuszy, do zachęcania naszych mieszkańców, aby wzięli udział w programie poprzez napisanie swojego życzenia i wrzucenie go do „studni życzeń” w nadziei, że życzenie się spełni!
