SAVILE BLUE & GREEN

PLAQUES IN GREATER

As I walk to and from our bookshop along the south side of Bedford Square in Bloomsbury (often four times a day if lunch at the Club is included) I almost always look at the Blue Plaque on No. 41 for the writer Anthony Hope [Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins (1863-1933)], author of The Prisoner of Zenda (1894) and other novels of adventure and romancer, and wonder what life was like in that grand house where he lived with his young American wife, Elizabeth and children from 1903 to 1917. In the 1911 Census he (aged 48) is living there with his wife (aged 27), their daughter Millicent (5), son Richard (5), a nursery governess, nurse, parlourmaid, housemaid, and cook. He was member of the Savile only from 1887 to 1891 when he was still earning a living as a barrister, though already writing short stories, and living at 2 Bridewell Place with his widowed father, Rev. Edward Comerford Hawkins, Vicar of St Bride’s, Fleet Street, who was a member from 1869 until his death in 1906. In Who’s Who he later listed his clubs as the Garrick and Athenaeum, but I suppose we must forgive him.

It set me thinking about other Savilian plaques and I have found that at least 66 Savilians (& 1 Temporary Member) are honoured by Blue & Green Plaques in Greater London. If you notice one that I have missed please let me know.
