Developing Small Forwards by Mike Procopio
Developing Small Forwards By Mike Procopio The Small Forward is very similar to a shooting guard as far as the skills that need to be developed. Usually the small forward is bigger than the shooting guard, which will open up more opportunities on both ends of the floor. Small forwards tend to handle the ball more in the offense than shooting guards do unless their team starts a combo guard or multiple point guards in the rotation. Most of your routine that you develop for a small forward workout should be similar than the drills used form the shooting guard workout. Where the workouts differ is the amount of screen and roll and offense off of the dribble should be increased in the small forward workout. Also, if the small forward that you are working with is bigger say 6'5 or taller at the high school/ college level or 6'6 or taller at the pro level a lot of post work should be incorporated in the routine. Opening Developing a small forward is like developing a point guard, shooting guard, and post player all in one. A small forward needs to know how to clear their defender so when you start working on off the dribble offense emphasize going somewhere with the dribble. Repetitions just like any position is very important with their mid and deep ranged jumpers. A player's physical traits (size, athletic ability, and skill) has a big impact on the workout that you put them through. Don't cookie cut your small forward workout for all small forwards. -

PUBLICATION: ESPN Insider DATE: 10/1/15
PUBLICATION: ESPN Insider DATE: 10/1/15 Atlanta Hawks: 2015-16 player profiles By Tom Haberstroh Here are our 2015-16 player scouting reports and analysis for the Atlanta Hawks . Projected starters Jeff Teague Position: Guard Experience: 6 years 2014-15 stats Scouting report + Quick pick-and-roll point guard who thrives in space + Elite foul shooter and floater but turnover-prone on breaks + Great hands but nothing special defensively Analysis It seems like yesterday Teague couldn't get off the bench behind Mike Bibby and Jamal Crawford in Atlanta, but Teague earned an All-Star bid after helping the Hawks to a franchise-record 60 wins last season. Teague raised his assist percentage and notched a career high in true shooting percentages by turning his iffy jump shot into a real weapon off the dribble. Teague is a pick-and-roll specialist who can slice into the lane at will. Among the 27 ball handlers with at least 300 pick-and-roll plays, Teague ranked seventh in efficiency, per Synergy Sports. Because he's not a tall point guard, Teague has mastered the floater in the lane to carve out an equalizer, and he has gotten much better at drawing contact. With vision, quickness and body control, Teague is a modern point guard for a progressive offense. He needs to continue to develop his jump shot if he wants to ascend into the top tier of point guards. Currently, he occupies a space below Stephen Curry and Chris Paul . At $8 million per year for the next two seasons, he's a steal for the Hawks. -

Courtney Cain, Ph.D. 2017 Letter from the Chair
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign www.history.illinois.edu Spring 2018 Courtney Cain, Ph.D. 2017 Letter from the Chair uring the past year, from Charlottesville to the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s launching of the Protestant Reformation to the centennial of the Russian Revolution Dand the sesquicentennial of our beloved University of Illinois, we were continuously reminded of the ways in which history impacts our present. Events also strengthened our conviction that historians and lovers of history must vigorously engage public discourse. Our job is not merely to set the record straight but also to add complexity and multiple perspec- tives to what might seem to be simple issues. Commitment to history as a form of civic engagement is what led many of our own faculty and graduate students to our discipline and it continues to drive our teaching and research. Over the past year, it has been thrilling to see our undergraduate students adopt this passion and reach out to share it with new audiences. This could take the form of Hidden History tours of campus conducted by public history students based on their own research projects. Or it could transform the airwaves via the People’s History Hour radio show, created by two of our majors. One of them, Nick Goodell, spoke for all of us when he declared, “History seems to me to be the best way to understand our world.” Clare Crowston The pages of this newsletter reflect our colleagues’ close engagement with a number of important anniversaries and historical events. Perhaps closest to our hearts is the 150th anniversary of the founding of our own university. -
