Reading Newspapers: Editorial and Opinion Pieces
Search our collections Reading newspapers: Editorial and opinion pieces BY KATHRYN WALBERT While readers generally turn to newspapers for unbiased factual reporting, newspapers also typically include a fair bit of opinion. Opinion may be woven into news articles, it may appear in specific opinion pieces written by the editor or the editorial board (”editorials”), it may appear in the writings of individual columnists, or it may appear in editorial cartoons or other parts of the newspaper. Newspapers and political bias Historically, some newspapers have had a particular editorial bent, leaning in one political direction or another. In some larger communities, there might be two or more newspapers, each with a strong affiliation with a particular political party or set of political ideals. Readers could then choose the newspaper that they wished to read based on their own interests. Journalists today typically strive to maintain objectivity — presenting a story without bias — but readers can still choose from among many different media outlets, and there are still often distinct differences in the ways in which different newspapers, television news channels, and radio networks present news about the same issues. Finding and identifying opinion in the newspaper Today, most newspapers set aside particular sections of the newspaper for columns, illustrations, and letters that express opinion, clearly separating factual reporting from these less objective features. Newspapers often have an editorial section that features the opinions of editors and, frequently in the same section of the newspaper, an Op-Ed page that features other opinions. However, it’s important to remember historical newspapers were not always organized like the newspapers we read today, so you may find opinion columns mixed in with “news” in a historical newspaper without a section heading or other marker to help you tell which is which. -

THE FAIR HOUSING ACT: ENACTED DESPITE THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA, NEUTERED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S UNWILLINGNESS TO ENFORCE IT Craig Flournoy† “We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro’s basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one.” —Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I Have a Dream1 This Article examines the 1968 Fair Housing Act from two perspectives. The first Part discusses the urban riots of the mid-1960s; the failure of the white press to examine the connection between the riots and systemic social problems, particularly segregation; and the Kerner Commission’s devastating indictment of mainstream media coverage of the riots, the Black ghetto, and African Americans. I argue the mainstream media’s poor coverage of the problems caused by inner-city ghettos made it more difficult to win popular and political support for the Fair Housing Act. The second Part examines the creation of a separate and unequal system of federally-subsidized housing in the two decades following enactment of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1968 Fair Housing Act. I argue erecting and maintaining a national system of taxpayer-assisted housing that blatantly violated federal fair housing laws, demonstrates the unwillingness of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and five presidential administrations to enforce the Fair Housing Act. † Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism, University of Cincinnati. SYNDICATED COLUMNIST ASSIGNMENT This portion of the summer reading assignment provides students with a measure of choice, and is intended to allow them to spread the work over the course of a few weeks, although this assignment may also be completed in less time by using archived material. Students are to select two columnists from the list below and read a minimum of five columns by the same columnist, writing a rhetorical précis (pronounced “pray-see”) for each column using the guide provided. A brief biography of each columnist is provided (most are quoted or paraphrased from the corresponding newspaper site); students may wish to read one sample column from several writers listed below before settling on the two columnists who will be central to completing this assignment. Sylvia Porter: Gender, Ambition, and Personal Finance Journalism, 1935–1975
ABSTRACT Title of Document: SYLVIA PORTER: GENDER, AMBITION, AND PERSONAL FINANCE JOURNALISM, 1935–1975 Tracy L. Lucht, Ph.D., 2007 Directed By: Professor Maurine H. Beasley, Philip Merrill College of Journalism This historical dissertation examines the career of Sylvia Porter (1913-1991), a syndicated newspaper columnist who developed the genre of personal finance journalism and created a space for women on the financial pages of newspapers. At the height of Porter’s success in 1975, she reached forty million readers in more than 350 newspapers, published a monthly financial advice column in Ladies’ Home Journal, and had produced a shelf full of books, including the best-selling Sylvia Porter’s Money Book. This dissertation—the first full-length account of Porter’s career—uses primary sources to trace Porter’s evolution from a media curiosity to a nationally recognized expert amid changes in women’s social and economic status. The author argues that Porter carved a niche for herself within the male-dominated field of financial journalism by using seven professional strategies: (1) She accepted a job in a non-prestigious field of journalism, (2) she allied herself with her readers rather than her peers, (3) she formed alliances with men who could help her career, (4) she used preconceptions about gender to her advantage, (5) she mythologized herself in interviews with other journalists, (6) she used multiple media platforms to reach different audiences, and (7) she appropriated the labor of other writers. The author also argues that although gender was an important facet of Porter’s public persona, her development of personal finance journalism was driven more by market forces and her eventual use of ghostwriters than by prevailing gender norms. -
