ROLLER COASTER STEM PROJECT

Math is all around us! Even wrapped up in twisty, turn-y, upside-down-y ROLLER COASTERS!

Tasks to Complete 1. Cut out and sort Stat Cards by tallest to shortest and then by shortest to tallest. Then sort cards fastest to slowest. Last, sort cards longest to shortest ride duration. 2. Bar Graph speeds of top 10 fastest roller coasters in America 3. Compare each coasters speed to determine which is the slowest and which is the fastest. 4. Select your favorite to design a model after from the 10 fastest coasters. 5. Build your roller coaster using various household objects. 6. Test and complete trial/error analysis to develop a coaster that meets the following criteria a. Can keep a marble on track from start to finish b. Has the same number of hills and loops as the coaster you selected c. Spans the distance of a minimum 2 feet

Task 1: Roller Coaster Stat Card Research

Task 2: Mapping

1. Mark a star where you live and color your state yellow. 2. Locate and label each of the 10 fastest roller coasters in the U.S. by drawing a line from the name to its state location.

Recipe Instruction Cards

Use these cards to calculate how long it will take to prepare each dish.

Beef Stroganoff 1. In a crock pot, toss in stew meat, cream of onion soup, and can of mushroom soup 2. Place lid on crock pot and cook on low for 3-4 hours (check for meat done-ness) 3. After 3-4 hours when meat is cooked through, stir well and turn off crock pot 4. Prepare egg noodles according to package directions 5. Add sour cream to meat mixture just before serving 6. Serve immediately and enjoy

Ranch Pork Chops 1. Spray your crockpot with non-stick spray 2. In a small bowl, combine the can of soup, the Ranch dressing mix and ½-1 full soup can of water and mix well 3. Pout some of the soup mixture into the crockpot to cover the bottom 4. Place the pork chops in the crockpot 5. Cover the pork chops with the rest of the soup mixture 6. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours 7. Serve immediately and enjoy

Meatball Casserole 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F 2. In a large baking disk (about 9x13) stir together uncooked pasta, marinara sauce, water, and meatballs. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 35 minutes 3. Uncover and stir. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella over the top and bake uncovered for 5- 10 more minutes or until cheese is melted and pasta is tender

Creamy Chicken and Rice Casserole 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F 2. In a large bowl, mix cream of chicken soup, cubed chicken breast, rice, chicken broth and sour cream together until everything is incorporated. Then spread mixture into a 9x13 baking dish 3. In a medium bowl, melt the butter, then pour in the crushed crackers and stir until they are evenly coated in butter 4. Spread the cracker mixture over the top of the casserole, then place in the middle rack of the oven and bake for 40 minutes or until the crackers are golden and the rice is tender

Peach Cobbler Dump Cake 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F 2. In a 13x9 inch baking dish, dump two cans of peaches and syrup. Drain the third can and add only the peaches to the baking dish 3. Top peaches with dry cake mix. Be sure to spread it out evenly over the entire surface of peaches 4. Drizzle cake mix with butter 5. Bake 55 min to 1 hr or until top is deep golden brown and fruit is bubbly. Dust with powdered sugar or top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream before serving if desired

Oreo Cobbler 5. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F 6. Cut butter into cubes and place in 9x13 inch baking pan 7. Allow butter to melt 8. Remove pan from oven and randomly place crumbled Oreo cookies in a single layer in the bottom of the pan 9. In a bowl combine flour, 1 cup granulated sugar, vanilla, and milk. Stir to combine, but do not over-mix 10. Pour mixture evenly over cookies 11. Evenly sprinkle brown sugar over batter 12. Gently pour hot water over batter and cookies in the dish 13. Bake 35 minutes at 350 degrees F 14. Allow to cool and set 5 minutes before serving 15. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream

Perfect Peanut Butter Cookies 1. To a large mixing bowl add the peanut butter, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, and stir to combine. 2. Add the Bisquick and stir to incorporate. Mixture will be very thick. 3. Using a large cookie scoop, 1/4-cup measure, or your hands, form approximately 11 equal-sized mounds of dough, roll into balls, and flatten about halfway by making crisscross marks using the tines of a fork. Dough may ‘crack’ a bit after you’ve pressed them down, it’s okay. 4. Place mounds on a large plate or tray, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, up to 5 days. Do not bake with un-chilled dough because cookies will bake thinner, flatter, and be more prone to spreading. 5. Preheat oven to 350F, spray baking sheet with cooking spray. Place dough mounds on baking sheet, spaced at least 2 inches apart and bake for about 13-14 minutes (for super soft cookies, or longer for more well-done cookies) or until edges have set and tops are just set, even if slightly undercooked, pale, and glossy in the center; don’t overbake. Cookies firm up as they cool. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for about 10 minutes before serving. 6. Cookies will keep airtight at room temperature for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 6 months. Alternatively, unbaked cookie dough can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for up to 4 months, so consider baking only as many cookies as desired and save the remaining dough to be baked in the future when desired.

Lemon Crinkle Cookies 1. Preheat oven to 350F. Spray Cookie sheet with non-stick cooking spray. 2. In a large bowl, mix together cake mix, cool whip and egg. The mix will be VERY fluffy. Just keep mixing until well combined. 3. Use a small cookie scoop or two spoons to drop rounded cookie dough into powdered sugar. Roll dough ball until completely covered. Set cookies on cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart. 4. Bake at 350F for 8 minutes or until very lightly golden around the edges. Let cool on the cookie sheet for a couple of minutes before removing to wire racks to cool completely.

Preparation Time

Estimate how long it will take you to prepare your entire meal from start to finish. Be sure to account for meal cooling times, shared oven space, and possible mistakes. ______
