16 ABOUT US SHAMI CHAKRABARTI AT CHRIST CHURCH AS PART OF OUR PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES.

Our work and locations across Kent and Medway put us at the heart of community life.

The research we undertake, our students, graduates and our partnerships, all contribute towards the prosperity and health of the regional economy and communities.

A large number of our students are from Kent and Medway, helping to make up a diverse population of UK and international students here at Christ Church. Many of these students stay in Kent and Medway, reinvesting their skills and knowledge.

Whilst studying here, our students are also making a big and positive impact through volunteering – around 18,000 hours a year – and injecting millions of pounds into the regional economy.

We also have a strong programme of community engagement through our outreach activity in schools, work placements and internship schemes, links to businesses and professional networks, as well as public events such as lectures, debates, performances and exhibitions.

Over the next 15 years we hope to build on this strong relationship with partners and the community.

Our 15-year vision to consolidate our city centre estate in Canterbury celebrates these partnerships, creating open public spaces and heritage features for the community including a recreation of the Pilgrims’ Trail from St Martin’s Church to the city. You can find out more about these plans in this About Us booklet.

22 ABOUT US INCREASING HIV DIAGNOSIS IN KENT AND MEDWAY

A major two-year study* exploring barriers to HIV testing and the effectiveness of a high visibility public health and social media campaign to reduce the higher than national rates of late HIV diagnoses in Kent and Medway, led to significant rises in HIV testing in the region. The study by Dr Stephen O’Connor, Reader in the School of Nursing, and partner organisations, included targeted educational interventions for healthcare professionals. The number of HIV tests increased by an average of 8% across the region compared to previous years, making an important impact on the health and wellbeing of those affected by the virus in the region.

Canterbury Christ Church University 25 SUSTAINABILITY

As a large organisation with strong links to the public and private sectors we have a wide sphere of influence. We have the potential to impact positively and extensively on society in many different ways. Part of this responsibility lies in preparing and equipping our students and staff to tackle the urgent societal and environmental challenges that lie ahead, as well as committing to minimise our ecological footprint.

Sustainability extends beyond the important task of reducing environmental impact or use of resources. It means we need to consider how we integrate the breadth of issues encompassed within sustainability – global citizenship; environmental stewardship; social justice, ethics and wellbeing; futures thinking – into everything we do.

We are a 0% waste-to-landfill University, and 100% of our electricity is supplied through a green tariff.

We have held full Fairtrade status since 2007 and gained the EcoCampus Platinum award in 2013, along with ISO14001 re-accreditation for our Environmental Management System in 2016. For more information go to: www.canterbury.ac.uk/sustainability
