The Archaeology of Lapita Dispersal in Oceania
The archaeology of Lapita dispersal in Oceania pers from the Fourth Lapita Conference, June 2000, Canberra, Australia / Terra Australis reports the results of archaeological and related research within the south and east of Asia, though mainly Australia, New Guinea and Island Melanesia — lands that remained terra australis incognita to generations of prehistorians. Its subject is the settlement of the diverse environments in this isolated quarter of the globe by peoples who have maintained their discrete and traditional ways of life into the recent recorded or remembered past and at times into the observable present. Since the beginning of the series, the basic colour on the spine and cover has distinguished the regional distribution of topics, as follows: ochre for Australia, green for New Guinea, red for Southeast Asia and blue for the Pacific islands. From 2001, issues with a gold spine will include conference proceedings, edited papers, and monographs which in topic or desired format do not fit easily within the original arrangements. Asaua 2 1 Samoan Studies Institute, American Samoa Community College 2 Centre for Samoan Studies, The National University of Samoa This issue of the Journal of Samoan Studies brings together selected papers from two recent sessions on Samoan archaeology: at the Oceanic Explorations Conference held in Tonga in August 2005; and at the 18th Congress of the Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association held in March 2006 in Manila. The authors address a richly diverse set of archaeological topics ranging from community outreach and the use of oral history to more traditional site reports and technical analyses. Geographically the papers are equally diverse, covering all of Samoa from Manu'a to Savai'i. Sand's paper exemplifies the advantages of utilizing oral traditions in archaeology. In addition to incorporating archaeological and linguistic evidence, the long-standing yet often neglected relationship of Samoa with 'Uvea and Futuna is a dominant focus in this paper. The impacts of colonialism during prehistoric and historic times is well documented in oral traditions and is dissected by Sand to reveal the depth of the relationship between Samoa, 'Uvea and Futuna. An exciting aspect of this paper is its demonstration that archaeological and traditional knowledge need not be in conflict, but can complement each other. The archaeological evidence from 'Uvea and Futuna also shows similarities to Samoa, and in turn will hopefully encourage more work in furthering our understanding of all three island groups prehistoric relationship, in relation to the wider Fiji-West Polynesia region. Morrison's paper indicates the value of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for predictive modelling of possible archaeological site locations. -

K. :MITCHELL, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, and Assistant Research Engineer, Institute of Transportation and Traffic Engineering, University of California, Berkeley This paper reports the results of an investigation aimed at de lineating the nature of the reactions accompanying the stabili zation of clay with portland cement. Consideration of the nature of cement hydration, the physico-chemical character istics of clays and lime-clay interaction leads to the hypothesis that during the hydration of a clay-cement mixture, hydrolysis and hydration of cement could be regarded as primary reac tions which form usual cement hydration products, increase the pH, and liberate lime. The high pH and Ca(OHh concen tration could initiate attack of the clay particles and also cause breakdown of amorphous silica and alumina which then could combine with calcium to form secondary cementitious material. A clay-cement skeleton and a clay matrix are likely. Mechanical, X-ray diffraction, and chemical tests on kao linite and montmorillonite stabilized with portland cement and with pure tricalcium silicate (C3S), the major strength-producing compound in portland cement, gave results in agreement with this hypothesis. Compacted clay-cement mixtures were cured at 100 percent relative humidity and at 60 C (to accelerate hardening) and studied at different times after molding. X-ray analyses showed that calcium hydroxide was formed in hydrat ing clay-cement, but was rapidly used up in reaction with the clay. Minor alteration of the kaolinite-cement X-ray pattern and marked alteration of the montmorillonite-cement X-ray pattern were indicated after curing periods of 12 weeks, sug gesting clay mineral structure breakdown and/or interaction with cement at particle surfaces. -

Lerf Walther-Meißner-Institut, Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, D-85748 Garching Abstract Intercalation chemistry is soon hundred years old. The period of the greatest activity in this field of solid state chemistry and physics was from about 1970 to 1990. The intercalation reactions are defined as topotactic solid state reactions and the products – the intercalation compounds – clearly distinguished from inclusion and interstitial compounds. After a short historical introduction emphasizing the pioneering work of Ulrich Hofmann the central topics and concepts will be reviewed and commented. The most important ones in my view are: dichalcogenide intercalation compounds, the electrochemical intercalation and search for new battery electrodes, the physics of graphite intercalation compounds, the staging and interstratification phenomena. The relation to other fields of actual research and demands for forthcoming research will be also addressed. Introduction As far as I found the verb „to intercalate“ and the term „intercalation“ has been used for the first time by McDonnell et al. in 1951 without any explanation for using it. 1 In 1959 Rüdorff used the phrase „intercalation compounds“ in the title of a review about all chemical derivatives of graphite.2 In these compounds atoms or ions have been inserted (alternatively, intercalated, or in German „eingelagert") under expansion of the lattice perpendicular to the nearly unchanged graphite layers. -

STEADMAN 2 AND MICIDKO INTOH 3 ABSTRACT: Five archaeological sites on the remote, raised limestone island of Fais, Yap, Federated States of Micronesia, yielded nearly 200 identifiable bird bones from strata that range in age from about 400 to 1800 radiocarbon yr B.P. Represented are 14 species ofseabirds, five species ofmigratory shorebirds, four species of land birds, and the introduced chicken. This is the most species-rich prehistoric assemblage of birds from any island in Micronesia. Because the "modern" avifauna of Fais never has been studied, it is difficult to determine which of the species from archaeological contexts still occur on Fais. Neverthe less, based upon modern distributions of birds from other islands in Yap and adjacent island groups, the environmental condition ofFais, and what is known about the relative vulnerability of individual species, it is likely that about nine ofthe seabirds (Pterodroma sp., Bulweria bulwerii, Sula dactylatra, S. sula, Sterna sumatrana, S. lunata, S./uscata, Anous minutus, Procelsterna cerulea) and three of the land birds (Poliolimnas cinereus, Gallicolumba cf. xanthonura, Ducula oceanica) no longer live on Fais.. FAIS ISLAND LIES at9° 46' N, 140 0 31' E, about of427 in 1925 to a low of 195 in 1977, followed 80 km east of Ulithi Atoll and 210 km east of by increases to 253 in 1987 (Gorenflo and the main island ofYap in western Micronesia Levin 1991). -

KIRCH OGER CURTIS GREEN, A TOWERING FIGURE in Pacific anthro- Rpology, passed away in his beloved home in Titirangi nestled in the hills overlooking Auckland on October 4, 2009, at the age of 77 years. Roger was one of the most influential archaeologists and historical anthropologists of Oceania in the second half of the 20th century. He revolutionized the field of Polynesian archaeology through his application of the settlement pattern approach. He conducted significant field research in New Zealand, French Polynesia, Samoa, Hawai‘i, the Solomon Islands, and the Bismarck Archipelago, advancing our knowledge of prehistory across the Pacific. His collaborations with historical linguists provided a firm foundation for the use of language reconstructions in prehis- tory, and he helped to advance a phylogenetic approach to historical anthropology. The Lapita Cultural Complex, now widely appreciated as representing the initial human settle- ment of Remote Oceania, was first largely defined through his efforts. Papua New Guinea MILTON HOOK Milton Hook, Ed.D. (Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan, the United States). Hook retired in 1997 as a minister in the Greater Sydney Conference, Australia. An Australian by birth Hook has served the Church as a teacher at the elementary, academy and college levels, a missionary in Papua New Guinea, and as a local church pastor. In retirement he is a conjoint senior lecturer at Avondale College of Higher Education. He has authoredFlames Over Battle Creek, Avondale: Experiment on the Dora, Desmond Ford: Reformist Theologian, Gospel Revivalist, the Seventh-day Adventist Heritage Series, and many magazine articles. He is married to Noeleen and has two sons and three grandchildren. Papua New Guinea is located between 0 and 10 degrees south of the equator, to the north of Australia. It occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea. Introduction In the nineteenth century German traders came searching for supplies of coconut oil along the northern shores of modern-day Papua New Guinea. Pockets of British traders established themselves on the southern coastline. In 1885 an Anglo-German Agreement was reached that divided the eastern half of the island along the mountain ridge that divided the north from the south. In 1902 the control of British New Guinea in the south was ceded to Australia. During World War I Australia captured German New Guinea. It was henceforth known as New Guinea. -

Index to Niugini Caver Tracy Harwood and R. Michael Bourke* Niugini Caver was a journal devoted to documenting cave exploration and speleology (the science of caves) in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The journal was published on behalf of the PNG Cave Exploration Group (PNGCEG), an informal association of those engaged in cave exploration in PNG. It was founded in early 1973 by RM (Mike) Bourke, supported by his wife, Jean, who were based at Keravat, about 40 km from Rabaul, New Britain. Mike edited sixteen issues of the journal, volumes 1 to 4, from 1973 to 1976. Another member of the PNGCEG (and also University of Queensland Speleological Society), Malcolm Pound, supported by his wife, Alison, and others in Port Moresby, took over the editing when Mike left PNG. The Pounds produced nine issues across 1977, 1978 and 1979. After a gap of several years, they produced a huge catch-up issue (volume 7, numbers 2, 3 and 4) of 124 pages in 1982. Geoff Francis, assisted by John Wyeth and Bernard Pawih, produced one issue in December 1982. This was the final issue, as the number of active cave explorers in PNG, most of whom were Australian, British or New Zealander, had declined as this generation of expatriates left PNG. Twenty-seven issues of the journal were produced, containing 1010 pages. The focus of the journal was documenting caves in PNG, but many other cave-related topics were covered, including documentation of cave use by indigenous Papua New Guineans (rock art, burials, wartime history, legends, spirits and stone artefacts). -
