Pitta and Maria Luisa Mendonça Introduction In this publication, data and recent analyses will be presented on the expansion of sugar cane monoculture for ethanol production in Brazil, and in particular on the monopolisation in the sector due to mergers and the takeover of production plants by foreign companies. This study is focused specifically on the merger of the Brazilian company Cosan with the Dutch oil company Shell, which resulted in the formation of Raízen. Some of the central elements in our analysis concern the economical, social and environmental effects caused by the spread of the agricultural model based on monoculture and large land ownership. In addition to the supposed environmental benefits deriving from the replacement of fossil fuels, the official line about the benefits of this growth includes the prospect of access to the external markets and energy security in times of crisis. With preferential access to loans and several forms of state subsidy, 45% of ethanol worldwide is produced in Brazil. Of all firms running the 435 production plants in Brazil, Raízen, the company formed in the merger between Cosan and Shell, is the largest producer. The structure of joint venture Raizen The Raízen corporation is the result of the partnership of Cosan with the Dutch oil company Royal Dutch Shell. The formation of the company was the major transaction of the Brazilian sugar energy sector thus far; one of its stated aims is to turn ethanol into an international commodity2.

Termites are key components of soil fauna, playing an essential role in organic matter decomposition and nutrient cycling. However, they can cause significant economic losses in commercial plantations, such as sugar cane. Therefore, the correct identification of termite species is critical for pest control. Here, we evaluated the species richness, abundance and functional groups of termites in sugarcane plantations in 53 cities throughout the state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. We also analyzed the influence of macroclimatic variables on termite species distribution and functional groups. We found 22 taxa of two families, of which the most frequent species were Termitidae (96.51%). Within this family, Apicotermitinae had the highest frequency of occurrence (37.12%), followed by Termitinae (30.57%), Syntermitinae (27.95%), and Nasutitermitinae (0.8 %). The other family, Rhinotermitidae, had the lowest frequency (3.5%), being represented only by Heterotermes sulcatus Mathews. We classifiedNeocapritermes opacus Hagen (29.26%), Apicotermitinae sp.2 (24.89%), Cornitermes cumulans Kollar (13.10%), and Apicotermitinae sp.1 (6.99%) as common taxa. The remaining 18 species were classified as rare.

O SECRETÁRIO DE POLÍTICA AGRÍCOLA, no uso de suas atribuições e competências estabelecidas pelo Decreto nº 10.253, de 20 de fevereiro de 2020, e observado, no que couber, o contido no Decreto nº 9.841 de 18 de junho de 2019 e nas Instruções Normativas nº 2, de 9 de outubro de 2008, publicada no Diário Oficial da União de 13 de outubro de 2008, da Secretaria de Política Agrícola, e nº 16, de 9 de abril de 2018, publicada no Diário Oficial da União de 12 de abril de 2018, do Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento, resolve: Art. 1º Aprovar o Zoneamento Agrícola de Risco Climático para a cultura da melancia clima quente, cultivo de sequeiro, no Estado de São Paulo conforme anexo. Art. 2º Esta Portaria entra em vigor na data de sua publicação. CÉSAR HANNA HALUM ANEXO 1. NOTA TÉCNICA A melancia (Citrullus lanatus), considerada uma hortaliça de fruto, é originária da África equatorial, pertencendo à família Cucurbitácea. Sendo plantada em todo Brasil, a cultura da melancia é cultivada sob condições de clima bastante distintas. Em regiões produtoras do Centro-Sul do Brasil cultiva-se melancia em condições de clima ameno, sobretudo a partir dos meses de junho e julho, podendo ser notado um aumento significativo na duração do ciclo da cultura, bem como variações nos valores de coeficientes de cultivo (Kc), que retratam a demanda hídrica das plantas.
