Steven Edward Piper Curriculum Vitae (January 2006)

Steven Edward Piper was born in Durban where he spent most of his life. His schooling was in Westville and at Kearsney College. He studied at the Universities of KwaZulu-Natal (B.Sc. Chemical Engineering), Witwatersrand (M.Sc. cum laude Applied Statistics) and Cape Town (Ph.D. Applied Mathematics). Initially he worked in industry but soon developed an interest in ornithology, both as an avocation and later as a vocation. He joined the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 1977 where he stayed for 28 years as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor holding posts in Mathematical Statistics, Surveying and Mapping, Psychology and Biological and Conservation Sciences. About the time he joined the University of KwaZulu- Natal he initiated two long-term demographic studies, one of the Cape Griffon Vulture ( Gyps coprotheres ) and the other of the Long-tailed ( Motacilla clara ) and these have run for 28 and 29 years respectively. He has published over 30 papers in the scholarly literature, many in his specialisations and also with other scientists, many of these arising out of collaborations with scientists in southern Africa and abroad. His scholarship was recognised when he was asked to contribute the bulk of the vulture and wagtail species texts for the new ornithological reference work “Roberts – of southern Africa VII th Ed. ”. He is now retired but continues his association with the University of KwaZulu-Natal by supervising students, conducting research and publishing papers.
