Drakensang: The River of Time on Steam Rivers of Time is a collection of science fiction short stories by American writer L. Sprague de Campfirst published in paperback by Baen Books. The remaining pieces River of Time first published in the present work. The book collects the author's nine tales of time-traveling hunter Reginald Rivers River of Time, the hero of his classic, " A Gun for Dinosaur ". He wrote another Rivers story in to fulfil a request by Robert Silverberg for a dinosaur story for his anthology The Ultimate Dinosaur ; afterwards, de Camp added to the sequence until he had enough stories River of Time a book. The Rivers stories take the form of first-person narratives by the protagonist told to companions whose identities vary, but who have in common the fact that their contributions to the conversation are omitted, and must be inferred from those of Rivers. Every story is an anecdote from Rivers' career as a conductor of time safaris to previous River of Time, both to hunt prehistoric creatures and for scientific purposes and, occasionally, anti-scientific purposes. In addition to Rivers, the main recurring characters include fellow members of his safari firm, including his partner Chandra Aiyar, camp boss Beauregard Black, and cook Ming. In River of Time instances, the actions of their human clients prove more troublesome than those of the extinct fauna, a theme set in "Faunas", a poem by de Camp that precedes the stories. An afterword by the author tells how he came to write the series. Prehistoric species of various eras featured in the series include AgriochoerusAlamosaurusArchaeotheriumBrontopsCamptosaurusColumbian mammothCoryphodonDeinosuchusDiprotodonEurypteridGastornis River of Time DiatrymaGorgosaurusHoplophoneusHyaenodonIchthyostegaMastodonMegalaniaMerycoidodonMetamynodonMetoposaurusMylodonOrnithomimusParasaurolophusPhenacodusPlaceriasPostosuchusProcoptodonRutiodonSaurophaganax or Allosaurus referred to as EpanteriasStegosaurusTeratosaurusTriceratopsTroodon formosus presented as Stenonychosaurusand supposedly a type of pachycephalosaurand Tyrannosaurus trionychus. Tyrannosaurs of the genus Gorgosaurus are mentioned occasionally, and many times River of Time Rivers will say that the Raja is out in some River of Time in the Cenozoic, taking a group to hunt some form of prehistoric mammal such as titanothereentelodontor uintathere. Prehistoric marsupials and Indricotherium are mentioned in "The Synthetic Barbarian," and numerous Pleistocene megafauna are seen in "The Mislaid Mastodon," including Castoroides ohioensis and the American lion. While Rivers River of Time Time is a well researched time travel series, paleontological knowledge has improved since the stories were written, rendering some aspects of its portrait of the prehistoric past obsolete. Dated material includes the following:. Sprague de Camp, The Enchanter Completed. This story contains elements of scientific racism and white supremacism as Rivers' client, a racist Texas millionaire, and River of Time two Boer bodyguards attempt to prevent the evolution of Negroes by going back in time in Africa to kill their prehistoric ancestors. DARKFALL LOGLINE A catastrophic solar storm charges the Earth’s atmosphere, enabling a small group of humans known as Summoners to practice magic while obliterating electricity and chemical combustion. Mankind is thrust back into a new Dark Age. SERIES PREMISE What if science stopped working? What if magic started working? What if scientifically developed, sophisticated society is, in the blink of an eye, thrust back into what is effectively a new Dark Age? THE EVENT DarkFall’s main premise is that there are individuals who, due to a rare genetic mutation, are capa- ble of channeling power from a negative magnetic atmospheric charge, breaching the fabric of our dimensional plane and calling forth creatures from alternate dimensions. These individuals are known as Summoners. Earth is intermittently subjected to coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that charge our atmosphere like a battery. However, the strength of these events is rarely higher in magnitude than -300 nano- Teslas (nT). Within the DarkFall mythos, our planet has been subjected to CMEs in excess of -2,500 nT on only five occasions.¹ Depending on the magnitude of the initial event, residual charges persist any- where from 100 to 600 years. The most recent occurrence of this phenomenon was recorded by a Benedictine monk, Gregor Mortier, in 923 C.E.

MARTIANS, GO HOME by Fredric Brown. Grafton pb, dist in Aust by William Collins. (C) 1955. 202pp. A$7.95. On sale now. You may recognise the cover on this paperback - it is the same Freas artwork used on the cover of the September 1954 ASTOUNDING that ran a shorter version (a baldheaded little green guy with pointed ears with his head resting on the palm of his hand, with a squint in his left eye looking through a giant keyhole). The story itself concerns the invasion of the earth by 'Martians' oack in 1964. They appeared all over tne earth and were hellbent on oeing nuisances - one of their well known proclivities being to watcn the mating habits ot numans. Since they could see in the dark and look through clothes, sheets ano walls, there was not much anyone could do to stop them. The well known humorous sf classic. THE SONGS OF DISTANT EARTH by Arthur C. Clarke. Grafton pb, dist in Aust by William Collins. (C) 1986. 228pp. A$7.95. On sale now. The latest of Clarke's soft' sf novels. Another novel of the far future set on a planet nearly all ocean. Though this one has some problems that the inhabitants of the planet in DROWNTIDE do not have - one is an earthship which shows up to disrupt the calm, the other is a mysterious change in the doings of the creatures inhabiting the oceans of Thalassa. The natives of Thalassa were settled down to a life of calm and seemingly ease. The only disturbing thing was a matter of some nets breaking.
